Deliver Us Mars Review - The Final Verdict

In the end, what we get is an inconsistent experience that has just as many clear strengths as it has glaring weaknesses. If you’re looking for a captivating story that is expertly told and populated by well-written and well-acted characters, Deliver Us Mars will hit just the spot for you. In the process, however, you’ll have to tolerate and look past several flaws.
Clunky movement, slow and often uninteresting gameplay, visuals that are best described as rough around the edges, a barrage of technical issues- and that’s just scratching the surface. Would I still recommend the game? I would- but at the same time, I’d warn you to be patient and prepare for plenty of frustration along the way.

For those of us born pre-internet, the games "problems" are minor and easily overlooked for the bigger picture. We grew up on Sega Genesis, N64, PS1, others I'm embarrassed to list lol. We played games on cartridges that stored bits and bytes while games today take GB just to update. Our hero was a colored shape or two oddly connected in a kinda humanoid way, we had to image the games story playing out in the theater of the mind, using the limited graphics depicted on screen. We constantly imagined ways to make the stories more realistic, more immersive. I remember being a huge fan of "couch coop", but only having a 2nd player half the time, so I would fantasize about somehow playing with another person, somewhere in the world, that happed to be playing the same game at the same moment. I remember the shock and wonder of the "link cable" or "lan", and it's inevitable growth into MMO genres of super realistic games. You're either nodding along and smiling brightly right now, or really confused and disinterested. That's kinda my point. Sometimes these indie developers make games like Deliver Us the Moon/Mars and the younger crowd just sees a raw, unfinished, subpar slow bland game with an interesting moment or two, or at best a hilarious unintentionally glitch. But, Us older gamers are from a different time, a different mindset. We have no problem filling in some visual holes with our imagination, we expect and prepare for a broken bit of code and a quick reload retry. We feel the world from the frame of reference of the protagonist, and the story unfolds much like reading a good book as we dig in deeper and deeper. It makes me sad to think a day will come when nobody left alive understands the emotion I'm trying to convey, but for now we are here, and thus these sorts of odd games find a niche home in the hearts of us graying gamers. When a batter hits a home run they're "swinging for the fences" aka they're trying to get the ball past the fence to make a home run for the team. In terms of its meaning here... i think it's pretty self explanatory. He's saying he appreciates when a small indie studio swings for the fences (trying to score a home run) aka trying to make a really good ambitious game which would be considered a "home run" to the dev team if they were successful.

Voice acting and music was fire imo, and the space floating was fun. Climbing was pretty janky, but it's a story game all the way so it's fine with me.

Well, you would play this because of the story, not the gameplay mechanics and whatnot. It's more of an experience rather than a test of your abilities like so many other games. No open world, no multiple choices, no "create your own story" and gametime padding. Refreshing to say the least. You strap in and enjoy the ride with an occasional break where you walk/explore/climb/solve puzzles. And the music...oh my...easily one of the best space themed soundtracks I've heard so far. I would recommend it to all SF/Space lovers if you want engaging story and immersion, most of you will not be disappointed.

I always find it funny everything people say is a flaw or something they don't like, I often DO like. The climbing mechanic is so enjoyable and makes way more sense than other games where you just push one button and hold it down and off they go. The environment visuals I think are amazing, but maybe it's because I'm playing on a high powered PC and I'm not dealing with any of the same rendering issues? The character models are something to be desired, but I've often been able to look past that when I'm as into the story and narrative as I am, which was the shining star of this game anyway. I also think all the parts of the game where players are expecting more "direction" to know what to do are so much more immersive when you're supposed to be solving puzzles and figuring things out on own, and paying attention to what's going on around you. I feel it creates an awesome amount of immersion!

I had heard whispers of this game, or rather the title sounds familiar. Never knew of the prequel though, so I think I'll play that first. Always up for a good 3rd person adventure.

I loved the first one and many of the technical issues had been resolved by the time I played it on ps5. I preordered this one and have just completed it and can agree with many of the reviewers comments. In fact I feel the 7 was rather generous... my main issues is the performance, over use of the laser puzzles and the climbing sections were just so tedious.

This game is fantastic, one of the best sci-fi games I've played; I disagree with the review in many points, I don't see those flaws anywhere and those you can find are so minor they're irrelevant. I played it in VR with the UEVR mod and it made the game even more spectacular than it already is. If you have a VR headset do yourself a favour and play it that way, it's quite something. Also, the people complaining about the climbing...really? it was perfectly done, the best climbing I've seen in a while, certainly better than that in games like Tomb Raider or God of War where all you do is push the stick in any direction. This was an awesome experience, I loved everything about it: great story, great gameplay mechanics and puzzles, climbing, characters, graphics, design, scenery..... it all worked perfectly well, zero bugs, zero issues on PC. I can't wait for the third game in the series seeing how much better this was than its predecessor (which I also loved)

Hopefully some of the rough edges get smoothed out, but I really enjoyed Moon. This isn’t a AAA game, so my expectations are lower on the graphics and what not. I’ll check it out on its inevitable appearance on Gamepass.

It's on ps plus extra rn, pretty fun playthrough. Runs fine enough on ps5. The story was super well written. I recommend using headphones for the hologram puzzles, because the visual ques make no sense to me at least.

1 billion percent. I played the 1st just before this and this sequel is amazing. The first deserved all the accolades and this does also... It's insane how people considered this not good. It's so much better in so many ways. A great evolution from the first.... These games should totally be made into movies. Perfect for them.

or even like tombraider, because that is wha the rock climbing resembles. evewn the 2013 tombraider had better climbing animations. To me it looks like the main charachter is not distributing her weight and moving her bodyweight around when she climbs. when she stretches her leg out and puts it on a new spot on the wall her wieght needs to shift to that leg so she can support herself on the leg, then the secons step psi to pul her other leg towards her. the way it looks now is if she is floating and just moving her leg. Even 10 year old games did it better, i know that was from a company with a bigger team and more experience but still.

I enjoyed Deliver us The Moon, but this looks doesn't look great. The characters models and animation are rough and the switch to 3rd person does not help at all because of that.

7/10 for me, a wonderful story, but towards the end the pacing is not great. Lots of walk here for 5 seconds, then cutscene and repeat. Worth it on sale for the story alone. The launch sequence gave me some epic levels of immersion, I am a space lover though.

Wathcing the whole review, I would say that a rate of 6 is more appropriate. At the end of the day, this is a video game and not a Movie or a TV Series. Therefore, the gameplay should be its most importand aspect and should affect the final rate accordingly :)

The first one plays perfectly on PC. Finished it with a nice ray tracing effect on and was quite a blast! However, I only played it after several patches. I wouldn't touch any of their game at launch.

I played it last month and found it ran fine on ps5, though I would suggest running it on performance mode...Only real issue I had was when it saved checkpoints.

I had a lot of fun with it. The "world building", the story, its very good and builds off of the first game very well with no real gaps. There are some areas that can feel a little frustrating (puzzles and climbing mini games), but they only slow down the flow of the game, not halt it, which is the important distinction. As the review said, it has things that are improvements over the first game and some of the same issues. But in the end, it did not crash on me once, whereas the first game had temp soft-locks and massive frame drops on top of crashing to desktop. Its a solid middle to what will obviously be a three-part story. While I don't know if I enjoyed it more or less than the first one, as they are kind of different, while at the same time the same, I did enjoy it, quite a bit and I am now eager for the third (and likely final) game in the series (which I would hazard will be called Deliver Us The Earth).

I imagine you might have played it by now but it depends what you are looking for in the game. If you enjoyed moons puzzles and level design, it's not as good in Mars as there's only 1 type of puzzle and the level design isn't quite as varied or clever. The narrative is a bit more directly told and with a few extra characters which help contextualise gameplay. The environments are varied and as the reviewer said there's rock climbing which is quite boring. It's a solid game, that you won't regret playing but I wouldn't say it leaves a lasting impact.

The graphics for the characters are horrible. Given the time in-between games it should've been improved. We're not asking for photorealistic CGI scans of people on the level of "Death Stranding" but c'mon. On the PS5, the people look like they got Clayface drunk and he acted out the characters. Everyone's hair looks like they've had electro-shock therapy. The acting....managable at best. Crying and the facial animations are underwhelming. Given "modern audiences" and The Agenda...SPOILERS 1. Of course the father would be white, straight male and "bad". 2. He would be overwhelmed by two girls and a wife who has some feminist rant and nothing bad about her is seen as he is emasculated and "everything is your fault". 4. "Savior" is "strong, independent wahman" who's "Super smart and can do anything." despite having stick-thin arms and the body of a teenage boy who can "effortlessly" used climbing axes with zero fatigue. 5. FORCED cutscene holograms where control is completely taken away. 99% of them are long and you can't do anything not even skip them. There are at least 3 climbing areas where traversal requires a jump/spin move and there's NO guide on how to do it. NONE. Jumping off while climbing and being able to control direction easily should be standard over a decade ago. Glad it wasn't full price. The story of both games is quite good but the story itself can NOT save a game/movie/series. The launch sequence mini-game is good but they are rare and story driven. A good add to the game, IMO. Controls are very wonky. You can't jump/pickaxe into the limited areas b/c she's so slow. She also slides down far too much given the 2 types of materials in-game. She doesn't weight enough enough soaking wet with weights to fall that far. Maybe by the time "Give Us Pluto" rolls around maybe it will be on the graphics level of "Death Stranding" and similar games. Save your money for a sale at least 30% off.

@@Allknowingkeith Final Fantasy 16 - long time series fan. A Plague Tale Requiem. I can appreciate independent games when the story makes non-AAA graphics not standard. Take GRIS, Journey, and ABZU for example. Normally, I'm not into artsy and lower res games but I took a chance on all three. "What Remains of Edith Finch" is another good one. First person POV and the story is the focus. No combat. Short game that can be done in maybe 4 hours or so.

A 7 seems kind of high for the number of issues the game has and the closing statement of being prepared for plenty of frustration should lower the score as well. I can handle the aforementioned issues if I am playing older games and streaming them on my ps4/5 but not a new game that plays with those limitations as if we aren't in 2023. I also understand smaller studios or indies having limitations but most of these seem like they could have been fixed before release.

aww dang this looks like it had potential but I feel like maybe it has a bit of “wokeness” which I can overlook. But what I cannot overlook is clunky and ugly mechanics and animations… the climbing sections look so annoying and horrible. On the opposite spectrum, look at Death Stranding. That game made traversing obstacles and terrains really fun. I was never ever bored playing that and all the animations were quick and worked and weren’t awkward… makes me bummed to see such potential :(((
