The rumbling and slamming against the door does not start until after the Curator rips out the page with the name of the serial killing, leading me to believe the Curator took matters into his own hands and let the serial killer live instead of letting him die, upsetting something or someone, the curator's "higher ups". The number changes to 0180 after the ferry leaves, implying DuMet/Munday increased his body count. I had a theory that Munday had a partner helping him, and I'm surprised you didn't touch on this. So I noticed that in the saw trap in the spa, Ryan survived by letting Monica die. We see his mannequin still standing, nothing seemed to happen to him. I think he somehow became Munday's partner, dressing up in an identical outfit to help him out in the hotel. I also noticed that while Du'Met was chasing the girls outside with an axe, he wasn't holding the axe when he walked into the curing house where Mark and Charlie hid. Mark also tells Charlie that he wonders if Du'Met has a partner. He didn't have the axe inside the lighthouse either. But when the cop arrived on the dock, Du'Met appeared out of nowhere holding the axe again, where he held on to the boat, then was killed by the propeller. I think the hand we see grabbing the mask on the shore was Ryan, who continues the cycle after Munday had died. I also think they had a second hotel to continue the murders, and that's the hotel where the girl who "won" the contest at the end gets invited to.

I have always pictured The Curator as Death. As he says several times: "I’m not here to help, just take into record what you are doing" Essentially he’s just there to see if people is going to die or not based on actions we make in the games. Maybe this is his way to give us the power of life and death. He wrote a fictional story and wants us to complete it by making decisions. If you look closely enough when you are playing these games then you can actually see him several times in the background. This indicates that these games/story’s are probably not real and we’re just being tested. There’s so much we know about the story’s of these games but we know nothing about The Curator and he probably wants it to stay that way. We will see in time tho. Sorry for the long comment but I needed to rant a bit lol. Hopefully I have open some eyes to what he could possibly be and we could theorize further. Great video as always Harry!

I'm almost certain The Curator is the personification of Death, there's too many hints that he is that line up without much room for doubt, what I'm curious about is who the player is? I assume God as we do have the power to "interfere" and give characters in the stories/real world the strength to survive or not, but that almost seems too easy especially since one of their future releases by the title (O'Death) is probably going to revolve around the mystery of who he is. Maybe we're another entity that Death, tired of being an observer, is trying to empower with the abilities of God that he can control & thus have more of an influence on the world? Which would be bad lol He's the best character in these games to me. There's genuine intrigue to him, dunno if he's a good guy, bad guy or impartial as he says? It does feel like this is gunna crescendo at some point though & we'll have to make a choice of whether to trust him or not.

Destiny can sway the events of the story based on how certain characters have a different destiny with their actions. Death is just there to record and see it. Just a disclaimer for viewers: The H. H. Holmes section of this video is the fake H. H. Holmes, i.e. the popular media portrayal that grew over many years of questionable new coverage and not the guy whose only confirmed kills were 9 total: family members, a friend and his family and claimed in court nearly 30, many of which were confirmed alive at that time. Neither was his hotel a murder castle, actually it was kind of pathetic, just the top floors above the apothecary.

@@OGZelda626 To be brief, a lot of it is sensationalism that was created by the press when Holmes alive and by now most people do not realize is not fact. There is no proof Holmes had a "murder castle." Any hidden rooms within the hotel he owned were for hiding stolen furniture and, as OP pointed out, anything he might have sold to medicine was from grave robbing. As for the murder count, Holmes CLAIMED to had killed 27 people, but this was an obvious lie on his part because some of the people he claimed to have killed were actually alive at the time (in other words, he was acting like your typical serial killer who wanted attention and taking advantage of the attention being given to him). As someone that is a mortician, it’s hilarious how misinformed people are about formaldehyde. First, it’s a gas not a liquid, so after a period of time of being in an open container like a bathtub, all of the formaldehyde would gas off. Second, formaldehyde does not preserve you forever. It’s strong enough to preserve tissue long enough for a funeral, but it is physically impossible to preserve every inch of tissue of the human body. It doesn’t prevent flies or maggots or decomposition either. Edit: wanted to add on that it’s as funny as the lack of research that went into mortuary assistant

Formaldehyde can be diluted into a liquid thats probably what’s in the game and it can also if strong enough causes precipitation of of proteins which results in cell death so in theory it can prevent maggots and the eggs of flies from surviving probably not the flies itself as they’d be able to just go away from it but I’d agree with on the fact that all of this in the game is very far fetched but I liked the idea nonetheless 😂

Minor Curator theory -- the Curator is the Ferryman. His rules are that he cannot personally intervene. I'm unsure as to why the player can, but that's a theory for another day. Throughout the series, we're tasked with collecting certain items for previews of what could happen, as well as him allotting us the opportunities for 'hints'. However, this final addition he tasks us with a request he's never made before. He offers reward for the Ferryman's tokens. This might suggest that ( like the tarot cards held a personal connection previously ) these have more of a connection to the Curator than the player might at first glance think. At the end, it shows names crossed off a list on a page in front of him. First is H.H. Holmes ( and his given name ). The second is Munday, which is crossed out. However, his door is accosted before he can cross out Du'met's. While it might be as suggested, that this is a response to his 'failure' to have more people die in the anthology, I would offer this suggestion instead. The loud bang at the door was both a reminder and a threat -- the Curator is NOT to intervene -- meaning he's not permitted to cross out the alias ( and thus end his life ). The Curator is shown visibly displeased at the end, but is he displeased that so little have died during the series... or that Du'met survived, and he's powerless to put an end to the piles of work the Devil in Him continues to provide?

Like the check in/out log book, immediately you could tell the handwriting under the check out date was always different than the signatures and check in date, but the check out date handwriting always matched, so obviously those people weren't checking out. What I can't figure out is if this is suppose to have supernatural elements. Because of the little details that were put in the game, I can't accept that anything is coincidence. Holmes' birth name was Herman Webster Mudgett; Munday's full name was Hector Waylon Munday. Both have the initials HWM. Did the creators of this game do that to hint that Hector is the reincarnation of Holmes? And, during one scene where Munday falls off the roof, after a minute he gets back up like nothing happened, not even a limp, not to mention how he survived that last confrontation on the boat. The game is called The Devil In Me, maybe Munday does have the devil in him, making him invulnerable? I know it's just a video game, not to be taken so seriously, but it's a story being told, too.

Cuz this is just how world works. There are so many bad people in this world not just one. I know this kills the drama behind existence of "multiple killers" so don't take my comment seriously lmao I also like other theories about killers, like the guy, rayn, who killed his sister in the saw test might be helping munday. Keeping that in mind, I think The Devil In Me is incorporating some details from the Phantom of the Opera (classic Lon Chaney film and musical adaptation). The mask, the animatronics, that labyrinth of a hotel filled with traps, accessing it by crossing a lake obscured by swirling mist. Might not be the case, but just a few things I've noticed.

My theory on the last scene is that the curator didn't scratch off/killed dumet. He is always going on about how he cannot interfer or change the story. But by keeping him alive he did just that. And why would he kill him? He's knocking up a good kill streak keeping him busying...providing the curator is actually death as some believe.

This essay is amazing. I saw many people always comparing anything Supermassive Games has released to Until Dawn even to this day, always stating Until Dawn was better in many aspect. I guess some of them are, but you can't hide the fact they have stepped their game over the years. Maybe people these day don't have the attention span and only care about surface level intricacies, which is why these kind of essays is always a welcome addition.
@adreamofspring_wastaken Жыл бұрын
The thing is, I REALLY don’t like it when people compare the DPA to Until Dawn. Until Dawn is a AAA title funded by Sony with all-Star actors, DPA are more experimental, less funded games that usually have one star. These games are experiments, not Supermassive trying to replicate the success of UD. If you want a game to compare to UD, look at the Quarry.

Before I realised Munday was actively trying to keep Kate alive so he could use her to blackmail Mark into making the call and continuing the cycle, Kate's impenetrable plot armour had me climbing the walls during my darkest timeline run. She always lived, no matter how many stupid decisions I made or how badly I failed her QTEs. I even had a bug where the screwdriver, which I had made a point of not giving her, magically appeared in her possession after The Curator's intermission, saving her in the glass room. I was starting to suspect that Supermassive had a crush on Jesse Buckley and didn't want to kill her character. At that point it had become a personal goal to kill Kate and not just because it was the goal of the run. Finally, I decided not to make the call when the time came. If I could say one thing to Supermassive, it would be this: "Don't make your players roll for outcomes you are not prepared to follow through on and avoid plunging your characters into pearl unless you are willing to follow through with the failstate". I'm not wrong here am I? In a game like the Dark Pictures Anthology, having a character who is impossible to kill instead kills any and all tension in a scene. A finale-only death worked with Sam in Until Dawn because she only appeared in a handful of scenes, but since Kate is arguably The Devil In Me's main character, her plot armour is much more obvious.
@Cha_Cha_Chai2 жыл бұрын
The Quarry suffered the same shortcomings with a good chunk of its characters. The current generation of games don’t feel as open to possibilities as Until Dawn did. Deaths seem almost fixed to the narrative rather than oopsies that can occur to derail it.
@RidireOiche2 жыл бұрын
@@Cha_Cha_Chai You make an excellent point, as the games have gotten longer the branching paths do seem more restrictive than previous games, with fixed points in the narrative the story crisscrosses like checkpoints that reign in the feeling of choice. Supermassive did manage to keep the suspense and tension surrounding the entire group in Little Hope. How the group dynamics and narrative were handled made it feel natural and the danger feel balanced, to the point where you wouldn't notice until it was pointed out that Andrew couldn't die before the finale. Throughout that game, Supermassive expertly positioned Andrew near but never directly in the path of the danger; he was always our avatar assisting others or on the periphery of danger, never the target of the pearl as Kate becomes repeatedly throughout the events of this game.

If I’m going to be honest, I had the thought that Jamie was the one he was actively trying to keep alive . Because she talks about death a lot, and is pretty much morbid. I also thought Jamie was in on it because the part where you are in the silver cash area with Erin and Jamie’s voice comes out of the corpse. There’s no reason for me to believe that was really Jamie because we had just seen Jamie in a freezer.

Worth noting that in reality there's no evidence that HH Holmes had poison gas traps in his hotel. He had confusing room layouts and secret doors, but not necessarily traps of any kind. A lot of that seems to be the exaggeration of a few journalists when the story broke, and has since become legend. The real reason Holmes requested he be buried deeper and covered with cement is not because he was so dangerous, but because he feared people digging up his body and desecrating it. His final words to the court were not a warning, but a plea. A lot of artistic license was taken by journalists after this case hit the streets. The reality of many notorious serial killers is far more lackluster than the legends claim. The cliche of the hyper intelligent and well-poised serial killer like Hannibal Lecter is just not very realistic. Check out the truth behind the Son of Sam to find one of the most notorious cases of people taking the legend and running with it to extremes, while the real man was a sad pathetic loser.
@AmberGraves80 Жыл бұрын
Okay, crazy theory, but I think there were two serial killers on the island. The time stamps in the game contradict because Du'met can't be in two places at once. I think Hector found the serial killer that was "learning on the job" and realized this guy's ability to make animatronics would help him with his issue with bringing his mom back. So, they start working together! Hector fakes his death, the other guy disappears, and they go into the hotel business. I'm probably wrong, but I thought it made sense with the killer picking up the mask know the end and that the Curator didn't scratch out Dumet's name at the end. What do you guys think?
@DeadDancers2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure Du'Met was an alias. I'm pretty sure it's literally impossible for one man to have done everything/been everywhere (including customising all those mannequins of the crew while also studying them and tormenting them simultaneously - inside one afternoon/night?) and at the very end when the Custodian is crossing out names... Munday's is crossed out (died in the motorboat incident) but Du'Met - the man who picked up the washed up mask - remains.

I think the Curator is perhaps is a ferryman like Charon in Greek mythology. Ferrying people between the land of the living & the death. After all he asks us to collect obols & he's acting as a mere observer to our choices. However, he is occidentally asking us if we want tips & perhaps the power he serves is annoyed that he's indirectly helping or offering us tips when all he's supposed to do is observe not interfere. I have 3 ideas as to why he is doing this: 1. He's job is to test humanity & it's will to survive through the player finishing his fictional stories. 2. He is testing us through these fictional stories to determine if we are good enough to take his place as the Curator or become a higher power. 3. He's acting a judge as we are dead & these stories are a test to determine if we should be allowed to continue to live or pass on to the land of the dead
@nyxen87122 жыл бұрын
I really like these theories. Another theory to add just on the spot. What if the curator is testing us to take over the role of death, or a higher up, and using these tests to determine if we can handle it. When the curator essentially let's du met live and the other force gets angry, maybe it's the other force realizing something is off and going on, and this is the curators way of either taking control and sending the message that death is replaceable, or that the Curator, although scared and hesitant, is a messenger of change. Heck, maybe the curator is training us to take over for him so that he may become death himself, so he can make the choices, and letting dy met live is him taking a stand against death as a taunt.

I have studied a tiny bit of forensics in post-secondary and one of the topics I remember is about handwriting. Everybody has unique handwriting though deciphering it is quite difficult. But if you look at writing repeatedly, you will definitely see some similarities. From the hotel logbook. You can definitely tell the one signing out is the same person. However, this can be discarded as simply the owner being the one who writes the sign-out (but if that's the case, then they should be the one writing the sign-in as well).
@caniwasteallyourtimeherein97282 жыл бұрын
I work in a museum as a front office, the sign-in has to be written by the guests, but oftentimes I'm the one who writes the sign-out for the guests when they forget about it. I'm not sure if this is allowed in a hotel tho.

I feel like the stories in the whole collection of dark pictures anthology games could have been fleshed out a lot better starting from the very first of the series on man of Medan whose ending was just insulting. I just feel a lot of times plot twists are either not working because they're too dumb or simplistic. To even my own surprise I'd say until dawn the game that started this whole anthology although not being part of it to this day had the best story. Very simple and generic premise but very well executed with strong moments, good mystery vibes and atmosphere and some reveals that really hit the spot.

I’ve said for a few games now that The Curator is actually Death. The transposed skull in House of Ashes was a little on the nose in making this point, but I first started thinking this in Little Hope. If you accept a hint and he quotes Shakespeare he’ll say “I met him once, you know. I meet everyone… once”. Since then, I’ve been working to the idea that he is death itself, a better dressed grim reaper. He does have a few things in common with Red Dead Redemption’s Strange Man too, which also helps the theory.

So nice, I watched it twice before I commented. You really did your research into the secret ending [Mark is "ferry man" to save Kate.] conditions (not quite the same as killing all five during the game, although the outcome is ultimately the same), and both standard and Curator's cut versions of key moments in the narrative. There are tons of things to find, well paced fake-out clues, achievements to get for different characters (for certain deaths or uncovering certain clues), and the game feels expansive while still being in a highly controlled setting. All markers of a great game. Super Massive promised a lot with this game, and unlike The Quarry earlier this year, it surely delivered on the experience being intriguing, scary, and fun from start to finish. Don't get me wrong, The Quarry still feels like a spiritual successor to Until Dawn, but The Devil in Me is taking notes from all the games before it, including the Quarry, and covering all of its bases. The things that needed improving were, and the things DPA is known for that people love were expanded upon and made to or beyond their usual standard of quality.
