Ristar would’ve been the perfect character for the Saturn. The game looks beautiful on the Mega Drive, and phenomenal for the Game Gear, so I can imagine how mind blowing this would’ve been on a 2D powerhouse like the Saturn.
Besides the sprites on ristar looks so 3D ish So a saturn game wouldn’t be out of hand

A truly great game. Also the Japanese version had a few differences. Biggest one is the beginning. There was no hero. The galaxy had sent prayers to the Star Goddess "Oruto" who sent Ristar to save the Star system But I truly wish a Ristar 2 would be made someday or at least a remake. I mean could you imagine Ristar on 3DS or PS4 or any system? It would be such a beautiful game. Who agrees with me?

I agree, honestly sega missed a big opportunity with Ristar. I love Sonic and all, but after " Sonic 3 / Sonice & Knuckles " I lost interest. I know Sonic is pretty much the main star of sega, like how Mario is the star of Nintendo. But they really should've put more effort into making a series for Ristar. The music, colors, atmosphere, gameplay is so vibrant, timeless. I don't remember seeing much promo for this game when it was released. I saw the cover of the game inside of a gaming store in a mall called " Kaybee Toys" ( fall 1995 ), and the cover grabbed my attention, got it for Christmas that year and I was so HAPPY. I still play it as of now

I think what should have happened with Ristar is that a port to the Sega Saturn should have been made concurrently with or even overtaking the Genesis original. It would have gotten more attention that way, even if it wasn't a 3D game, it would look spectacular, and there would have been more reason to make sequels. But that's just an idea.
@inendlesspain47246 жыл бұрын
Sega of America (and specially it's president, Berny Stolar) thought the Saturn's american catalog of games should only have 3D games (despite the console's 3D capabilities being implemented as an afterthought and not so well) and nothing else, ignoring any other 2D game from Japan (or anywhere in the world, really) regardless of actual quality. And by "regardless of actual quality" I mean they wouldn't bother with any 2D games no matter how good they might be, but they'd release anything 3D even if the games themselves are bad because, basically, Bernie thought the regular customer was just dumb and would immediately jump to the Saturn because of the sheer amount of 3D games, not realizing that the PS1 was a much better option because it also had 3D games and, unlike Saturn games, they were actually good. Not only they had it against 2D games, but also RPGs. Two genres that made the Saturn great in Japan, which in turn spawned lots of quality titles that never came to the west (I think some came to Europe, though) all because of a stupid brainless business strategy that didn't even make any sense.
@brandonwilliams61193 жыл бұрын
Also not to mention Ristar on the Saturn wouldn’t have the compressed voicelines and they could even go above and beyond with arranging the soundtrack like MMX3 on the SNES compared to it’s PS1 and Saturn Counterparts for example.

Also check out LandStalker. It was basically Sega's Zelda but doesn't get much attention, but it's really good too. Kinda hard but not in a challenging way. Like puzzles require split second reaction and pixel-perfect accuracy, and if you mess up you have to start all over, including killing multiple enemies. Best 16-bit graphics are the "boss" levels on The Lost World: Jurassic Park, on the Mega Drive. Particularly T-Rex Escape, Raptor Chase and Pteranodon Attack. All done with no FX chip. Games like Vectorman 2, Alien Soldier and Flink show what the Mega Drive can do. And the MD has higher resolution - 320x224 vs 256x224 meaning 25% more on screen. The much faster processor of the MD just seals the deal. The fact the MD came 2 years before the SNES, and was cheaper, is often overlooked. SNES is awesome for RPG's, where resolution and slowdown aren't usually effected by these limitations.

Even after I got Genesis Classics on Switch, there were so many other popular titles that I never tried Ristar. Then I got Switch Online Genesis, and out of the 14 initial titles Ristar was one of them. It finally took Nintendo to put a spotlight on this game for me to play it, and I am glad they did. I am not sure if Sega or Nintendo decided to push this game on this service, and for what reason, but all the same this game deserves a lot more attention. Great video as always.

Agree, Ristar is one of the most underrated games on the Mega Drive and IMO had a lot of potential. Thanks for the vid!

A Ristar sequel wouldve been great on the Saturn- the 2d powerhouse that could do 3d too!

Such an underrated game and one of the greatest character designs ever. In my opinion the closest thing we got to a sequel was the platforming sections in the Werehog stages in Sonic Unleashed. Most people don't like them but I actually do because aside from the fighting it plays similarly to Ristar.

Good job man, awesome show as always !
@wchan399 жыл бұрын
Hmmm...I thought it was pronounced 'Rye-star' because of the character looks like a star and designed as a gaming mascot, hence making this character a 'rising star'.

Same. Didn't even consider other pronunciations based on that logic (that I immediately arrived at lol.)

@@nathenhutchison6182 I would condemn you for playing the friggin rot-in-hell AtGames miserable clone, but not for having played Ristar. *although it may have tainted the code to some extent*

I first played Ristar on the Mega Drive. It was a copy borrowed from a friend, then I went out on a mission to find a copy for myself. I was about 13 that time. Now I am 36, the Mega Drive is long gone, but I still keep Ristar in my heart. (And I occasionally play it on emulators (: )
