@sarahnour55612 жыл бұрын
I think Forky could have worked in a 20-minute special, like Toy Story Time Forgot or Toy Story of Terror. Imagine Bonnie brings Forky home, Woody introduces him to the other toys, and most of them have existential crises over Forky's sentience. Pricklepants and Buttercup have a philosophical debate, Rex stares off into space and questions his existence while Trixie tries to comfort him, and the Potato Heads conduct experiments where they place their eyes and mouths on inanimate objects to see if they'll come to life. Meanwhile, Woody, Buzz, and Dolly gently talk Forky out of his urge to throw himself away. Forky doesn't believe a human can ever love trash, so Woody explains how Forky's existence comforted Bonnie at school. Buzz tells Forky his story about believing he was a space ranger, how his entire world crumbled when he realized the truth, and how he learned the value of being a toy. Dolly tells Forky what a lovely girl Bonnie is and how much fun it is when she plays with them. In the end, the toys all conclude that they have no idea how Forky is alive, or how any of them are alive... but it doesn't matter. There's no use questioning it, because what's important is that they're alive for a purpose: to make their child happy. The message can be that there are no answers to life's biggest mysteries, but we can still find meaning in our lives. Forky accepts his role as a toy and sees the value in making Bonnie happy. The end.

Not once in the history of media have the words "just don't think about it" ever been needed to be made in the defense of stories that are legitimately good. In fact, the best stories shine even brighter the more you think about them. Hell, whether you believe Him to be completely fictional or truly the Only Begotten Son of God (I testify the latter), part of the reason Jesus Christ has become the most influential person to have ever lived on Earth is because one of His teaching methods was through parables, which are essentially soft riddles in story form, the answers of which were the morals He was trying to teach, and which could only be deciphered by *actively thinking about and analyzing the story He told.* Trying to hand-wave away universe destroying plot holes by saying "just don't think about it" isn't just antithetical to good storytelling, it's anathematic to the human condition. Whether you believe it the result of four billion years of evolution or one of the most precious gifts from God, the capacity to think, question, learn, and determine right from wrong is the single biggest factor that sets human beings apart from animals. The scientific name for "human" is "homo sapiens," which roughly translates to "I know," but bad storytellers, hacks, and their apologists will insist you disengage and atrophy your connection to the most unique thing in the universe just to make yourself dumb enough to enjoy their stupid movies. There's suspension of disbelief, and then there's GTFO.

Another possible reason Toy Story 4 exists is to set up a possible spinoff such as a TV show on Disney+ about lost toys starring Woody and Bo Peep. Disney-Pixar probably don't really care about the story or the lore of Toy Story as much as they care about being able to make lots of money off of it.
@mr.machine33282 жыл бұрын
Well, Pixar, while not perfect, are artists first. Modern Disney, on the other hand...
@hotwax93762 жыл бұрын
And that's exactly why they made this unnecessary sequel in the first place. The third film gave us full closure, as the toys' relationship with Andy came full circle with him giving them to another child. It was the perfect ending to the film series. But because Bo Peep wasn't in it and fans demanded an official story for what happened to her instead of using their imaginations, Disney and Pixar realized they could make big bucks on a fourth installment. If they really cared about the integrity of the first three films they would've just done a spinoff film or series explaining Bo's whereabouts (or at the very least not made TS4 end with Woody leaving Bonnie and all the other toys behind for her). I think doing the shorts, specials, etc. is the best way to continue the series, which is why we absolutely did NOT need another movie to tell us about Bo's fate. They at least had the good sense not to recast Mr. Potato Head and reused dialogue that Don Rickles recorded for the first three films, so why in the world did they have to take a baseball bat to the message of the first three films, which was even more important?

Even Arthur had an episode that gave the message of “it’s okay to sometimes ask for help”. The episode was “D.W. D.W., still with a “trying to be a grown up” mentality rebuffs this idea telling her imaginary friend “I’m not a baby!” Then her imaginary friend tells her, “Sometimes grown ups ask for help too.” And that encourages D.W. to ask her friend for help. So an Arthur episode managed to tell kids that it’s okay to ask for help and that even when you grow up, you can still ask for help and that asking for help isn’t just for little kids very well.

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is that Woody could’ve been passed down as a collector’s item/family heirloom or valuable since the 50s from Andy’s grandparents to his mom, then to him but Andy’s mom gave Woody to Andy as a toy as opposed to a cherished heirloom. I’d maybe liken it to those porcelain dolls from the late 1800s early 1900s where they became collectors items instead of children’s playthings. But instead Andy’s mom was like “nah screw that” and let Andy have Woody as a toy.

But that's not enough though. There are extreme logical flaws even in the original trilogy with respect to the toys' sentience and the reason they freeze in the presence of humans. First off, why would a toy happily accept the fact that they're a child's plaything and they should all let the children play with them? How does every single toy know to freeze? We see that this isn't really an ingrained instinct inside them since Buzz apparently was doing it just to fit in. But what happens if a child hypothetically bought a Buzz Lightyear toy and he has no other toys? What if Buzz is literally his/her first toy? Would the toy just come to life and ask the child what his mission is? If so, then wouldn't this create chaos in the world and news would get out that Buzz Lightyear toys have something in them? Next, we see the barbies party in the next aisle but they're only doing it at night when the store owners are not there. This implies that they know they're toys to be played with and need to wait for a kid to pick them. However, they're brand new and in the shelf and have never met a used toy before so is this knowledge just ingrained in them? If so then why do Barbies get this treatment but not Buzz? And these two examples are just based on this video and I'm sure I can name a dozen more if I went back to watch the whole movies. And don't even get me started on the whole "freezing". Again, this isn't something ingrained in every toy by default since Buzz doesn't do it. Buzz has a reason to freeze but why do everyone else? We see in TS3 that toys have the same emotions as humans so why do they not feel the need to break this chain and long for freedom? Clearly not all toys are happy like we see the clown who was with Lotso so why would they care or bother to not freak out humans? Surely there were a few toys who were fed up with life and didn't care about the structure of the society. Surely there were a few rebels who tried to expose the toy world for what it is. The logic of this world fell apart the moment they introduced Buzz as a character in Toy Story 1. The world building logic of this movie was pretty much dead on arrival and we can't really blame TS4 for committing the same crime the last 3 movies did.

Frankly, that movie could've been any franchise from the Disney afternoon and made just about as much sense. It's pretty obvious they had an idea for a movie and then they just wanted some property on it the Disney wasn't really invested in that people would recognize. The only sequence they showed from the "original series" and how they beat the main bad guy at the end of the film, didn't even really follow the logic of Rescue Rangers, it was more like something straight out of Looney Tunes. Which drove the point home further, any cartoon would have done. Kind of surprised it wasn't an attempt at a Bonkers revival. If you wanted a zany cartoon, washed up actor turned detective in a Roger Rabbit style world full of cameos, why the fuck Chip and Dale? Probably because, as obscure as Chip and Dale have become in recent years, I guess nobody gives a fuck about Bonkers, aside from one KZbinr who turned out to be a groomer and a creep.

6:50 -- there's a bigger issue even then "the creators don't like the pixar theory." After all, Death of the Author means that what they intend doesn't much matter. What is important is that this is never established. it is a fantheory masquerading as an official solution in the minds of those who believe it. The whole Forky thing really does make me wonder the limits. A lot of them are discussed already, but what happens if Forky falls apart? If the glue dissolves or the pipe cleaners aren't connected anymore? Does he cease to be sentient or does he maintain control over his disparate parts? Do they each have their own brain or can he control them? We didn't need to know the limits before they actively started pushing them.

1:00:00 here's a fun fact. There's a deleted scene from Cars where there was going to be what I believe was a dream sequence where McQueen would have his engine put into a steamroller which would transfer his consciousness to let him fix the road. Then they put Mater's engine in McQueen's body. In addition to just being a dream, they cut it because raising questions about the mechanics of their world was something they realized was a bad idea. They forgot that in this film.

The 4th was actually the first time I was uncomfortable watching a Toy Story film. So here's a simple rule that every one of the film's tries to follow when it's not relevant to the plot: If Humans are on screen, the toys are either in hiding or lifeless. When the toys are doing things, the movies will go out of their way to avoid showing any other characters than the toys. Until I watched 4, I didn't realize it was to enforce your suspension of disbelief. The less humans you saw, the more you could relate to the toy's struggles and forget how concerning living toys would actually be as a concept. Something that only became more apparent as 4 rolled on into an antique store. Nothing bothered me more than the cast jumping across carnival stations with the moon igniting them by the back, and the tops of carnival goers bounding about in frame. By this point the toys had taken such obvious risks that I was pulled completely out of the movie on the grounds that there wasn't some conspiracy theorist tailing the main cast.

I feel I would've loved Gabby if they actually committed to her villainy, they introduced so many horror elements to make her stand out and make a first impression as some new and twisted for the franchise, The dead voice box being especially bone chilling. It's risky to make animated villains truly terrifying, but it often pays of like in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. But they actively exploit Woody's capacity to find the good in people without needing anything in return to force a redemption arc. Imagine if Woody felt like he needed to help her simply cause she needed help but ultimately had more important things to get done, such as getting back to Bonnie. He would reluctantly leave, feeling sorry because she was unable to find love and Gabby would lash out, feeling like he owes her and put Forky's life on the line to get what she wants from him, being okay to take anything away from Woody if it pays off. That would challenge Woody's personal values towards morality, just like it did in Toy Story 3 when Lotso exploited and left him.

I think Toy Story 4 exists as a way to make even more money off of the Toy Story brand via toys and the movie itself and to keep the franchise relevant to people in general. I believe Buzz Lightyear toys in particular are some of Disney-Pixar's best selling toys. Maybe Toy Story 4 was a way of keeping such sales numbers high. Toy Story 4 is most definitely a cash grab meant to cash in while they had Tom Hanks and Tim Allen available and for the reasons given above.

Here's how I would change Toy Story 4: - I would keep the intro. Nonetheless, I would also remove the Operation Pull Toy sequence with the window. I would have Buzz and Jessie work together to open the window. Rex or one of the other toys can be shown retrieving the barrel of monkeys and helping Bo pull Woody up. - Woody would consider joining Bo in the intro, but he would see his boot instead of Andy. Andy would enter the scene only after the car leaves. - Bonnie's parents are more caring and buy her a box of supplies meant to create a toy, but she loses the base form. Thus, Woody gives her a spork, resulting in the creation of Forky. - Woody has traumatic visions of the incinerator when he sees Forky attempt to throw himself into the trash. Woody, Jessie, and Buzz would probably experience trauma from the first three movies in their own way. Overcoming your trauma doesn't always mean that it simply disappears. - Buzz accidentally presses his chest button due to a bump on the road, allowing Forky to escape and throw himself out the window. - Woody promises to meet his friends at the carnival at a set time. Woody, Slinky, and Jessie jump out the window together, but Buzz is stopped when Bonnie momentarily wakes up. - Woody repetitively attempts to convince Forky that he matters, but he keeps failing due to Forky's many questions. Woody tells him the story of his life as well. - Gabby Gabby is much more menacing. There is a scene where she tortures Wheezy for his squeaker only to realize that it is not a voicebox. He is saved by a hooded figure. - Bo Peep meets Woody in the antique store instead of in the park. Harmony takes them both to the park. - Bo gradually becomes more and more embittered over the course of the film due to Gabby Gabby's taunts and the hardships throughout the course of the film. - I would remove Ducky and Bunny completely. - The toys search for Woody and the others to the best of their ability. They have much more significant roles in this film. Bonnie's parents decide to stay a little longer to cheer Bonnie up. - Buzz would not get strapped and become the grand prize. Instead, he would fly over the carnival and accidentally crash in an attempt to avoid birds and the rides. then, he would be captured by Gabby Gabby upon seeing the antique store and Forky. - Duke Caboom and Jessie create a distraction as Woody and Slinky free Buzz. He is apparently torn to pieces. Desperate to save her sheep, Bo attempts to save them from the cat. However, Woody risks his life to save Bo, causing Forky to wonder about the meaning of being a toy. - Gabby Gabby reveals that Harmony has always wanted a Gabby Gabby doll. Thus, it is revealed that Gabby Gabby believes that it is her purpose to be there for Harmony no matter what. This causes Forky to question his suicidal tendencies entirely and eventually accept his calling as a toy. - The sheep find the other toys and take them to reunite with Woody. They avoid being seen and strapped. - Bonnie and her parents begin searching for the toys. - Gabby Gabby threatens Forky directly, forcing Woody to surrender. Harmony has the voicebox installed into her. However, Harmony rejects her when Woody's voice plays. - Gabby Gabby is absolutely crushed by Harmony's rejection, but Jessie encourages her to join them upon remembering her time isolated from the world. - Rex, Trixie, and a few other toys stay behind in an attempt to pop the tires to buy time, but it has little to no success. - Bo attempts to defeat Gabby Gabby to avenge her friends, but Woody stops her. - The toys regroup at the carousel, but several street cats catch them. In a recreation of the chase scene at the end of the first Toy Story, they finally make it back to the trailer. Duke Caboom is alive and creates another distraction for the group, trapping the cats. Buzz flies Forky to the trailer as Woody and Jessie watch in pride. - Bo offers Woody to join her, but Woody refuses, remembering his promise to Andy and Buzz. However, a few of the toys, including Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head, join her and Duke. Woody and Bo ride away from one another. Bo reflects on the days with Andy and Molly as Woody and Buzz say, "To infinity and beyond, old timer..." Meanwhile, Bo says, "So long, move buddy..." - Gabby Gabby ventures on her own, determined to find her own destiny. - In a post-credits scene, Gabby Gabby is donated to Sunnyside at the end, where she meets the other toys there. - In another post-credits scene, Duke and Bo run into Utility Belt Buzz, a few new toys, and a modified Zurg, who tells them that they have a situation. - In one last post-credits scene, a man finds Woody's voicebox, who laughs nervously yet sadistically upon listening to it. The man is revealed to be Sid Phillips. Please let me know how this sounds! I will happily listen to any criticisms! Let me know if you want to hear my ideas for Toy Story 5 and 6!

They legitimately just didn't care about the one thing that helps a movie or show stand the test of time the best: the writing.

16:02 Now that you bring that up, that would be interesting for a toy story spinoff: Basically a toy story film that takes place in an alternate timeline where toys are no longer played with by children, are known to be alive by the entire world and all have gone into hiding because humans now think they are very dangerous and will either destroy them or the government will try to do experiments on them And all of that happens because of forkface ruining everything

I was thinking that but with Cid. He was scared from Woody after all, that he becomes a scientist and proves that toys are alive.

There IS a reason for those lights to be spattered on the ground....because now Woody FINALLY has "Fork Face" almost convinced that Bonnie needs him to be a toy and now these idiot directors need to throw in the stupid twist of Woody being reunited with Bo to justify the INSULTING ending of this painfully insulting movie. And watching this movie, and the dynamic between Woody and Bo....it doesn't seem like Bo REALLY CARES about Woody (both when she leaves AND when he finds her again). The only reason she even said goodbye to him was that HE came to rescue HER and then when they meet at the carnival, she seems actually ANNOYED that he showed up in her life again and she DOESN'T want him around to muck with her new-found happiness....which makes the ending EVEN MORE PAINFULLY WRONG. BTW, you just perfectly articulated why I LOATHE this movie and why I DO NOT consider it to be part of the Toy Story trilogy. For me, the REAL Toy Story plot ended with the third movie.

The thing that bothers me a lot about forky is the implications of what his character was supposed to be and how the writers didn’t had the balls to do it. is very easy to see forky as a character with special needs, to the way he talks, to his actions and how others treat him, and Pixar would (and already did in some shorts) definitely create a character that in canon requires special needs and it would be beautiful. along side that he’s apparently suicidal (with unfortunately there’s a link with people who have mental issues and suicide) but instead of making a character that has to overcome all of this hardships to becomes bonnie’s emotional support toy what did they do to him ? They made him a comic relief character that was a pain on wood’s ass at the begging and magically made him a more “funcional” toy at the middle of the movie…fantastical.

The more I look at TS4 and it's flaws, the more it makes me wish the film had a better written script or an alternate cut. Because while the idea of a 4th toy story movie sounds very stupid, most of the elements aren't too bad and could've worked if executed better (and if you had a more competent director in charge instead of Josh). Plus instead of making the movie about Woody and Bo, they should've made it about him and Buzz. Like put their friendship to the test and basically go full-circle with TS1's events. You can still have Bo, Forky and the lost toys aspect, but make the main duo the focus. Like maybe during the scene where Woody jumps out of the RV to find Forky, Buzz tags along with Woody to help him find the spork. And then during that scene they could both have an argument where Buzz gets furious at Woody for not letting him or the others help out look after Forky (sorta like the gas station scene from TS1). And hell, maybe even have a better excuse for Woody and Forky entering the Antique Shop. Like Forky runs off again, and both Woody and Buzz have to catch him which lead them to the said shop. Etc etc. I mean it still wouldn't be great, but it still would've at least been better than what we got in the actual movie.

Honestly Fork Face might be alive because he is just considered a toy. Not an imagination or just being played with per say but just because he is considered a toy via the arrangement of parts which would explain why why other inanimate object isn't alive. Except the spaceship box Bony made + the fact that it would make no sense for the other toys to be surprised by this than. Eh , at least I tried.

Whoever decided to make a spin-off serie about Forky had a terrible idea. Seriously, nobody likes him! He's not cute, funny or brave. All this character does is throwing himself into garbage cans and trusting a person he never met aka Gaby Gaby. That's it! There's nothing interresting about Forky. Making a show where he's the main character is not brillant, it's stupid :S If it was about Rex or Slinkey before they met Woody, that could be fun to see. I like thoses characters and seeing their lives sounds entertaining. At least they are charming and funny compare to Forky.

I think Toy Story 4 could have been handled with much more respect and grace than it was. It really goes to show how much having the right writer(s) and director(s) on a movie matter. I think Hollywood studios would be smart to consult KZbinrs like this one before they greenlight a script and throughout the rest of the production. Clearly, many of these writers and directors (such as those who worked on Toy Story 4) are way too stupid to craft a well-made story/movie without such help.

@elcarnaldo2 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I don't think Matpat dropped the ball by trying to explain forkface's being alive and all. I believe he had to get to his conclusion because the movie made it canon, and that's cause the director and writers didn't give a shit about sticking to the universe's rules. Kind of like when superman's writers gave him any power that they wanted, so he could beat any issue he was facing. It didn't always make sense, but we had to accept it because the official staff made it Canon without caring about logic.
