If anyone cares, a likely influence for the Moria sequence is William Hope Hodgson (1877-1918) who published some fantasy novels before WW1 (in which he was killed). Watchers, squid-monsters, the "apocalyptic log" i.e. Book of Mazarbul are all in Hodgson. Some point to Lovecraft, but in fact Lovecraft admired Hodgson and used the "apocalyptic log" device in the story 'Dagon'.

Apart from the earlier team-effort it was actually Pippin's sword strike to the base of the troll's skull that caused it to raise is head and reveal it's vulnerable neck that you, quite skillfully perforated, promptly puncturing its larynx and probably it's spine. Hence the wobble tongue. Come on, Gandalf. Pippin rodeoing a troll to it's doom is quite impressive.🤣

I am loving Gimli and Legolas as a couple. Glad they finally came out about it. Im assuming they just kind of organically stopped hiding it and no one ever said anything or made a big deal because they all knew already. Although seriously, their friendship arc is one of my favorite parts of the book. One of the light elements that makes it enjoyable while being deep. And it's wholesome. Makes me think of the stories about wounded soldiers on opposite sides who run into each other after crawling off the battlefield, and who end up binding each other's wounds and sharing their food and drink and waiting to be saved. Gives one some hope for human nature, on the individual scale.

Ha ha. At 18:49, I thought that too about Frodo taking the spear to his chest. A bullet proof vest will stop a bullet, but the trauma can still be fatal. Years ago a cop was shot with 45-70 rifle. The vest technically stopped the bullet, but the bullet still pushed the vest into the poor guy’s chest and killed him.

That's not even the most unrealistic thing in this scene in terms of how durable people are. "Boromir" questions Frodo surviving that troll jamming that spear against the Mithril shirt without blunt force trauma but not how he didn't splatter against that wall when that same troll chucked him across the room like a toy, and just walked it off like he was just shoved against a wall by a regular sized person.

That Squid you speak of was Hymbor, a high born oceanic citizen of Derilia that once stood up to the King for demolishing his quarters to build the Royal Armory. Hymbor was then exiled after his family was executed before him for crimes against the crown.He roamed the seas to find an army willing to help him overthrow the present King Durenhal, son of King Herendal the one who wronged Hymbor. But alas, since the fall of Sauron, all races were unwilling to participate in another war, especially one under water. One day he met Pedonis, an elf living in the forest of Gwirren to serve out his life as penance for staging a coup against the leader of his clan, who shared his malice towards the royalty and told him about a great monster deep in the Mines of Moria made of fire and light. Hymbor made his way in search of that light only to end up encountering the Fellowship who cut off his limbs. He managed to regenerate his limbs and swim back to Moria only to find that the Balrog had been defeated. 😢😢

I love how Boromir pointed out the watcher in the water bit. Even in the book the shit seemed like it came out of nowhere. Like it was a last minute decision without context.

Movie doesn't explain it, but the book does in a subtle manner. Gandalf notes how strange it is that the river is as low as it is higher on the trail, they find that the river was dammed up and Gandalf begins to get very suspicious and tells the group not to mess with the water at all, then Boromir throws a stone in impatience and just as the doors are opened the Watcher in the Water emerges. To my understanding the Watcher was basically set as a trap by the Goblins to catch any Dwarves fleeing that direction to escape the mines.

Even the smartest of them couldn’t come up with a plan that ingenious. Plus that theory also falls apart by the fact that it was stated the goblins didn’t know of the watcher either. It was just a happy accident it cut of the escape of the morian dwarves.

Imagine living in that place with thousands of other Orcs and Trolls, having to fear the shadow lurking in the deep while pillaging every scrap of wealth this place holds, you can count on low food rations. Probably getting startled by a small noise is like the bells from cantina. Its like:,,Food! First one gets it.'' But on the other hand, they were just as greedy if not more then the dwarfs for not just leaving the mines behind. Also i have to say, poor janitor who has to clean the place up when the dwarfs returned. Makes me think of Mr Filch from this Harry Potter universe.
