Nicely done sir. Pro tip for those wanting to do this but don’t want all the adhesive left. Use a heat gun or a dryer to soften the glue up and more times than not the fishing line will actually get behind the glue as well. Quick wipe with goo gone after and u can never tell it was there.

If I can make one extra suggestion to those trying this, use an eraser wheel that's ribbed (has teeth) instead of smooth. That way the risk of burning your paint with the rubber wheel is a lot less as your paint has a chance to breathe as the rubber is pressed against it. Nice video mate! Love your work, you have my sub, sir. Also, if you try this, don't cheap out on the cheapest wheel you can get, because those cheaper ones can be made of super hard rubber, which WILL burn your paint - I'm speaking from experience... you have been warned... but yeah, if you get a good one you will be loving it. I only know because I also recently did this and I tried quite a few of them. Looking forward to more content :)
@GanderFlight3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! I'm not sure how much heat relief the ribs will give when spinning at drill speeds, and along the lines of buying quality the "name brand" 3M adhesive removal is solid. I think it really boils down to keeping it moving - you can burn through paint with silk if you spin it fast enough for long enough. Thoughts?
@Horus_Works3 жыл бұрын
@@GanderFlight sure that's true enough. To try and explain it a little better let me offer this example - it's the same principle as used in buffing pads. You can use smooth faced pads to polish your car, or alternatively there are waffle or diamond faced pads you can use as well. The waffle and diamond buffing pads only exist to help reduce the chances of paint burn during buffing. Their material construction is the same as smooth pads. The principle is the same here - drill speeds being equal, the spinning surface of a ribbed eraser is aerated, and also there is less contact time with the painted surface per revolution, therefore less friction/heat being generated. This is what I found in our tests, and it's part of the reason why we went with this type of eraser wheel. I'm not saying that the smooth wheels aren't adequate in most situations, but a ribbed wheel we found is definitely a safer option on more varieties of painted surfaces, especially in the hands of non-professionals. Hope that makes sense, and please keep the vids coming!

How did you get rid of the ghosting ?
@lyleg.91922 жыл бұрын
What you refer to as ghosting meaning you can still see in the clear a slightly different lighter or darker facade of the original outline is not something so much to do with the shop or the tools used to do badge. What you are experiencing is the UV degradation from being exposed to sunlight and other weather sometimes even temperature differentials which is a natural process and also lets me know that your car was not new or very late model or probably in the southern part of the country
@user-pz5ju7mw3k Жыл бұрын

On a low setting a heat gun or a hair dryer probably on the high setting and not keeping it the same place you first want to do it for 5 or 10 seconds and then test that spot by lifting it say with a plastic spatula or similar if it doesn't give much then do another 10 seconds and then try again and so forth but heat will probably help you the best there. I'm sure your need is come and gone but for future reference for other items I guess still works

Damn could Dodge have put any more badges in such a small area? Great video! You are the master at this. I would never let paper towels touch my paint job though. Micro fiber only. Man, that would make nervous using such an abrasive technique on the clear coat. When you know how paint correction and polishing works, using a mechanical abrasion like an eraser wheel seems like it would tear through layers of the clear coat. I think using the technique shown on Ammo NYC and WhiteDetails (both professional detailers) channels would be my preference. Heat gun, fishing line, heat gun, fingers or plastic blade, automotive tar/goo solvent, rag or plastic blade, clean, polish.

Actually the way to go is to buy a proper polisher buffer variable speed preferred, and get a 2-in wool pad 2 in cutting pad and a cutting foam pad and a polishing foam pad if you cannot afford all of that just get the buffer and a polishing foam pad and at least a 2 inch wool then buy some proper liquid compound polishes and waxes or glazes even a cleaner wax
@lyleg.91922 жыл бұрын
@@GanderFlight because I've commented on the tool you used and I have a set of that and I only use it mainly for polishing sunglass lenses and my reading glasses lenses and other small items and yes even for just the areas of debadging your truck, a buffer would have done a better and faster job and you would have had way more control over what the tool touches and doesn't touch. A nice variable speed polisher buffer , i believe Northern Tool has a pretty decent one ,you can get one from Harbor Freight even but if you can spring it, a Makita/ Milwaukee and so forth Works excellent with typically available replacement parts which will probably be cords and/or you rewiring the cord at some point ...triggers and brushes ...these things can last decades so invest in one before they are not available or the prices go even higher. You can even buy a high quality lightly used one. If it looks even slightly beat up and scratch all over avoid those because there's no way of telling how many hours of use it had- you just know it had many hours . I take care of my equipment and they'll have a lot of hours on them but they won't look all beat up ,so take that as you may. you want to get a 2- wool pad which can be used for the entire range of processes to the paint but a lot of people like to use the foam pad so you can get them in different textures and open cell structures I guess is the best way to describe it but the best way to buy them , just by looking for either a cutting foam pad or a polishing foam pad in that type of wording that way you can get the right one and get 7 in you can even do 8 in if you can find them but you want to make sure that you've got part of the wool by a couple few inches or the foam extending out enough beyond the backing plate that has the arbor in it attached to the buffer ,that you were able to say slide in between the door skin and the side mirror or underneath the headlight assembly and where the bumper cover curve begins and so forth don't ever buy a backing plate that doesn't have Velcro and that extends far out from the center hole and make sure it's flexible without hard plastic or super hard vinyl rubber near its Outer Edge because when you touch parts of the car and it's spinning you will damage part of the car more than you'll damage the backing adapter and you want it to be the other way around

If your vehicle is from Phoenix, AZ like my 2015 f250. Then goo gone won't do diddly. STORY TIME: So, I was all set to go buy some fishing line, a heat gun, and an adhesive eraser wheel, but when I pulled up to Home Depot I realized I’d left my card at home. I was gonna go back but when I got home I decided to wash the car b/c we just had our last rain for a few days. When I was drying it I decided to try to just pull the letters off b/c it’s 75° and humid outside. The first letter came off fine, but I didn’t want to keep using my fingers, so I decided to give this thin paracord I used for making a bracelet. It worked like a charm on the “Altima” letters, “Nissan” decal, and the “SL” letters so easily. B/c I didn’t heat anything up I was able to peel most of the adhesive off with my fingers. For the left over I grabbed a microfiber towel and poured a quarter-size amount of extra virgin olive oil on it. Yes, olive oil 😂 I rubbed off all of the sticky part left over and most of the dirty and grime from being the letters and decal came off quite easily. I took another microfiber towel and dropped a quarter-size amount of Dawn dish detergent on it (b/c that duck commercial compelled me) and made little circles until it was completely clean. I rinsed it w/ some water and done! No heat, no tools, no harsh chemicals, no damage, and no dollars spent! BOOM!

There are many different types of solvents that you can use to break down adhesive and Goo Gone is mostly for items that would be affected by those solvents so light duty or delicate is what you want to keep in mind and keep in mind that some of these solvents are strong enough said if you don't immediately remove them or press too hard they can actually damage the product underneath. There's one that's fabulous and you do have to be very careful with it but it's something I'll still hold to the chest for now and I'll reveal later but it performs miracles

How about if you spray goo gone on the adhesive AND use the eraser wheel as well...will it be even faster to remove?
@GanderFlight Жыл бұрын
No because the eraser wheel works using friction - the goo gone would act like a lubricant and you'd therefore just end up with a mess.

DO NOT use the eraser wheel on a red candy. Like my truck is a at4. Paint code 434B. It will discolor the clear. You have to be careful on colors like these.

If I used the eraser wheel, is that all I'd need to get the sticky adhesive off? Or is there anything I should get along with it? I know the scratch kit is recommended but, anything else? where could I find these? Any local shops?
@GanderFlight3 жыл бұрын
You may want some adhesive remover - goo gone or goof off or rubbing alcohol to clean it off at the end. I'm not sure where you'd be able to pick them up locally - auto body supply store probably - I ordered mine through amazon - there is a link in the description if you're interested.

The Goo gone worked great but it took longer & on one set of letters that was removed the paint looked like it has crinkles & I don't know how to get rid of it
@GanderFlight11 ай бұрын
That would be my hesitation to leave any solution on there for a long period of time is that eventually it may dissolve past the adhesive and into the clear coat.

I have a new C8 Corvette and would like to remove the badging from the back. My concern is that some of the badging overlaps the striping on the car and am not sure the striping will hold up to removing the adhesive. I think it is ok where the badging is adhered to the paint but not sure where it is adhered to the stripes. Any thoughts?
@GanderFlight2 жыл бұрын
These eraser wheels are also used for removing pinstripes - so yes, I think it would also start to remove the badging. UNLESS its painted striping that is under the clearcoat. I'd gently run my fingers over it -- if you can close your eyes and feel the strips, this will start to remove it. If you can't tell where the stripes are then they are probably under the clearcoat.
@lyleg.91922 жыл бұрын
What you going to want to do is taking use a string strong enough to pass through between the badging and the car body then take a heat gun or hair dryer and start off with a little bit of heat and build up a little bit longer time or a little bit closer to the adhesive but test every few seconds and use plastic razor blades or you can even take those cheap flexible 3M Bondo spreaders and a pack of those cheap flexible but not so flexible but still harder plastic spatulas/ putty knives and just focus on the parts adjacent to the stripes and then that'll give you a little more experience by the time you get to the part covering the stripes and just gently go over it you may even want to use a scratch free kitchen pad to pull down on some of the adhesive and have a place for it to grab and sink into and that should leave your Pinstripes intact you can wrap it up by rubbing it with a little bit of WD-40 or you can use fingernail polish remover a touch of carburetor cleaner but use that lightly and sparingly and follow that up if you use something strong with just some Degreaser or other cleaner like this soap to remove any residue

What do u think bout using paint thinner .. i saw a guy use it w.o a wheel & done with in a minute or so ..
@GanderFlight2 жыл бұрын
Haven't tried it so I can't comment on it. I'd imagine paint thinner isn't the best thing for your clear coat - however if you don't let it sit for long maybe it would work? Honestly don't know.
