What a candid and heartbreaking story. Thank you for giving these fellow brothers and sisters in humanity a 'voice' that can be heard around our world. This man has a good soul. It can be seen in his eyes. I hope and pray that he manages to claw his way out of the mire he was born into and becoes someone who can use his life experiences to educate others.

Such a hard start in life for him as a child. I feel heartbroken for these kids who dont get a chance to shine bright. I can see he is a kind hearted man and he would be an amazing mentor to younger kids. I hope he gets the chance to help others because he definitely has what it takes to inspire and empower those vulnerable kids.

I was in a motorcycle accident a few years ago. My first roommate After the ICU was a guy with burns over 80% of his body. He was in a coma for 3 months. Someone had set him on fire for leaving his gang/organization because he refused to let his son join and insisted on leaving himself. his son had come of age and he didn't want that life for him. His son had to kick dirt on him to put the fire out. He was a great roommate and really put shit in perspective for me at the time.

It is so sad to see how the system perpetuates the problem. How do you expect a 12 year old, after being drugged with heroin at 10, to stay 6 years in juvee and come out at 18 ready to excel in society? I feel good in him, hope he gets sober and trails a better path for himself, although it be much harder with the cards he has dealt with...there is still time my man!

@@mikebetancourt6403 Of course the culture is to blame, but the system facilitates that same culture and even perpetuates that culture exponentially. Notice how he said in the interview that a prison number was a badge of honor? If the system effectively dissuaded that culture, the last thing these individuals would want is a prison number. Prison should actually correct the action that landed the individual a prison sentence, not magnify that same behavior and force individuals to participate.

I grew up in the socal “culture” the way Alex recalled & wrapped up his interview was profound. I can hear a lot of “gang members” share their war stories & not feel the trauma bond, & I just see someone trying to fit in. Alex didn’t have a choice & felt every pain the lifestyle brings. I hope he fights through his addiction, his story definitely needs to be heard. You gain nothing but violence, loss & missed opportunities from the lifestyle. We have never really talked about the deep shit aside one time when we had both taken LSD and MDMA and I could then talk openly but I can’t say shit when I’m sober.. My brain shuts down when I try. Even now though, I question myself on how I didn’t end up dead, stuck in jail or stuck on drugs like my parents , older sister ( RIP to my sister 🙏 ) , uncles, friends and the people on this channel being interviewed. Their stories are so damn relatable regardless of one another’s outcome. Thank you for always sharing ❤️

I grew up with all Latinos in my neighborhood. The importance of displaying outward hyper-masculinity or machismo as it’s known impacted Latino males detrimentally. The mindset manifested itself into a culture which rarely rewarded the men that pledged their souls to. I’ve dated and chilled with dozens of these type guys from cartel, to even the toughest gang leaders/members. I’ve always been fortunate to exude a genuine welcoming type of trustable persona. Plus I’m smart enough to value respect and privacy. Alex and guys like Alex are often so misunderstood and society judges without even understanding the struggles and personal tribulations that many of us cannot imagine. These guys rarely share their vulnerability because trusting someone with that truth, guilt and their battle with the machismo stereotype makes their weakness a reality. Plus many times when a guy shares his vulnerability many times women it was shared with uses it as a psychological weapon to fuck him up and humiliate him. So many of these guys in gangs are really really nice guys. Imagine being jinking on a daily basis I’m a fuck up. I’ll never change…. If I was wealthy I’d spend millions to ensure these guys are exposed to the possibility of success. I’m not naive …. I know… But guys like Alex still have value… they just don’t know it. Best wishes and luv to Alex and the Homies. I feel ya.

Wish you luck brotha Alex! There's a different side of life that needs your help to guide others to another way to living. The pitfalls of life knowledge can never be taken from you or changed. BUT it can be used to help others navigate though the treacherous terrain.💯

Alex,i’m a30 year herion addict from sheffield 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿,i’ve never been in a gang at all but i lose friends constantly now (i’m 51) so i can only imagine what you’re going through with loosing Stephen/steven ? i love the fact that you want to give back👍,the fact you do is quite amazing itself,as you know it’s going to be hard as F……..K but you need to stop the drugs if you really want to help,no judgement just my opinion 🙂,i wish you the BEST man, stay safe !!.

Footage and interview is approaching profound at times. Really good stuff. In another life, I’ve literally met more guys like this than I can count in so-cal facilities (nothing discounted from his story). I mean gang encouraged Hispanic men being fed heroin at a very young age

It is so sad to hear his story because he really never had a chance somebody needs to stop that mold maybe one day he will be able to turn young kids away from the gangs I pray for him I love his story you know it makes me look at gangsters in a different light because of my mind they just wanted to be in a gang I didn't realize it's so many of them were born into it

I've watched quite a few of the SWU episodes, and I don't think I have ever been so interested in wanting to know more about someone and their story. And also have a deep sadness for someone within the 1st 2 minutes of an episode before. He reminds me of my X husband by the way he was introduced to drugs. At 7 years old he was given heroin....and then became the gangs mule you could say. Because they would use the fact that he would be dope sick and that he would get something to take that edge off "IF" he did what they told him to do! IT"S SO SICKENING AND TERRIBLE THAT SOME KIDS HAVE TO START LIFE THIS WAY. After many years of being an addict he finally was able to sober up and start living at 43yrs old, although not after losing so much. I hope the best for all addicts that they can find it within themselves to get sober and live a life beyond their wildest dreams.... BECAUSE IT IS POSSIBLE, ODAAT ✌💜🙃🙏

@@tigerrrrrrrr6586 My wife's mom abused and tortured my wife's little sister since a baby because she resembled her father. She hated her. The worse was when she stuck heroin in her vein at 12yrs old. She became addicted. As an adult, she prostituted (homeless) in Compton, CA to get drugs etc. she passed away 2 years ago. Vehicle hit her and the report was labeled a homicide (currently unsolved). Not every case is the same. Marlene never had a choice. Or so, I believe.
