Blew my mind when I heard we were getting a new Gangstarr album in 2019, and was wicked excited to hear about the J. Cole feature. Still didn't expect it to be this good. This is like an instant classic, somehow it sounds like all their other songs from back in the day, like it will transport you back to the past, but it's also timeless. Song of the year.

This is already a classic. Much respect Guru, Preme and Cole. I’ve been getting roasted for liking Cole on this track, older hip hop heads saying they’re only here for Guru and I get that. Preme himself wanted a younger artist on it, he said either Drake Kendrick or Cole and he said Cole fit the best. Cole is one of the realest in the game right now, I’m a “hip hop head” myself but I don’t see how you can’t appreciate Kendrick and Cole just because they’re younger.

The first Gangstarr record I ever heard was ‘Code of The Streets’ back in 1994 and I’ve been a fan ever since. I bought every album Gangstarr ever released including the Greatest Hits double album. I had the honour of meeting the legendary Premo in London, back in the Summer of 2003 and he was gracious enough to allow me take a photograph with him after he asked me for directions to the nearest sneaker store. To hear the Immortal MC Guru and DJ Premier in 2019 as a long-standing Gangstarr Foundation supporter brings tears to my eyes. Salute to Cole for paying homage. Real Hip Hop 💯

DwayneSummers was it on Tim Westwood show by any chance?
@DwayneSummers5 жыл бұрын
Ethan No bro, though I spent many a weekend listening to Tim Westwood, recording his shows onto cassette tapes that I still have to his day. I met Premo back in the Summer of 2003. I was in an area of London called Angel for a conference and after went to go get some food from the one of the local restaurants . He was just there on the busy street, talking into his phone and walked up to me and to ask for directions. At first I didn’t recognise him because he wasn’t wearing his usual fitted hat but as soon as he spoke and I heard the his raspy familiar East Coast accent I knew it was the world famous producer for Biggie, Nas, Jay-Z, Group Home and the list goes on. I can say without shame that I fanned out. Angel wasn’t as culturally diverse an area back then so I think because I was wearing a Yankee fitted at the time, Premo recognised I was from the culture which probably made him comfortable enough to ask a complete stranger where the nearest sneaker store was. I directed him to the local Footlocker and JD Sports store and the humbly asked for a picture to which he replied “No Question!”. It was truly an honourable moment. I’ve now put the picture up as my profile pic here. One of my favourite Hip Hop memories. Salute the Gangstarr Foundation and RIP Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal aka GURU 💯

I'm emotional listening to this. This took me back to a time when I felt like Hip Hop was flooded with an extreme level of genius, collaboration and competitiveness that made the genre perfect. Artists were hungry to be legendary. There was a supreme pride in lyrics, delivery and production to deliver a product that was sonically unique. Meanwhile it connected with everyone on every block. Folks today who don't know Hip Hop don't understand what it was like to have about 2 dozen artists that would give you Hall of Fame type material and performances within a single year. Though they were competitive, they were intelligent, genuine and humble enough to marvel in each other's success. That is how we got incredible collaborations like this one here. J. Cole had to deliver a legendary verse spitting amongst one of the Gods of the game! #RIPGURU I still love Hip Hop. It continues to feed me and heal me. Thanks DJ Premier for bringing us another masterpiece!
