The scene mirrors George Costanza's visit to the squirrel post-surgery, where he awkwardly talks to it. Months earlier, Norm Macdonald shared a story on a talk show (I can’t recall which one) about having to talk to a cat after surgery, which seems to have inspired the Seinfeld scene. A friend of Macdonald's, who later became a Seinfeld writer, likely brought the idea to the show. The gangsters' discomfort in the scene parallels George's with the recovering squirrel. It´s great.
