Gangasagar Kapil Muni Temple & Related Stories Gangasagar Tirtha Yatra & Fair.
This is the place where Makar Sankranti is held & also called as the Gangasagar Mela.
Celebrated on the eve of Makar Sankranti, the Gangasagar Mela is a celebration is an ancient rituals & an important part of the followers of Sanatan Dharma. The Sanatan belief behind the ritual of Gangasnan during Makar Sankranti are as follows -
As Surya Dev (or the sun god) transits into Capricorn from Sagittarius, millions of pilgrims visit the shores of the Sagar Islands to take a dip at the holy confluence. It is believed that taking a dip in the right position washes away earthly sins and helps the devotees attain Moksha.
The Sahi Snan is followed by a series of extravagant rituals that continues for three days. Now I will tell you what is a Sahi Snan - It is a ritual & is practiced while taking bath from head to toe facing the Kapil Muni’s temple & dip in the holy Gangasagar is Sahi Snan to achieve blessings & wash off the sins & crave for worldly luxuries to attain Moksha.
There is also a practice of throwing a bundle of gems (Pancha-Ratna) and sacred thread into the creek of the river so that it ends up in the ocean. It is a gesture of sacrifice or Tyag.
In the early hours of Makar Sankranti, devotees brave the icy waters in the quest for Nirvana. Some shave their heads, while others perform Shraddha for their departed parents. The bathing ritual continues until noon.
After that, they head towards the temple of Kapil Muni to perform puja and seek the blessing of the deity. Gangasagar becomes a living tradition wrapped around faith, devotion, and belief for the followers of Sanatan Dharma.
In the evening, the fathomless depth of the ocean lights up with thousands of Diyas (earthen lamps), which elevates this timeless devotion to cosmic heights.
Kapil Muni Temple
There is a specific reason why Kapil becomes important here & a temple is here in Gangasagar which is mentioned in the Purana. The story relates to the Ganga itself & the relation between Kapil Muni & Ganga along with Bhagirath who was the seventh generation of King Sagar had reached in search of Kapil Muni on the orders of Brahma & Lord Shiva.
This story I have already covered in one of my previous vlog on the significance of Maa Ganga & her journey to earth. If you have not seen that vlog please watch. However, I will tell you the legend behind. So the katha is as follows -
• King Sagar who was an ancestor of Bhagwan Ram had two wives, Sumati and Keshini. From Sumati King Sagar had sixty thousand sons and one son from Keshini. Once, King Sagar decided to perform Ashwamedh Yagya for power and supremacy. This scared Indra dev & he stole the horse and hid it at Kapil Muni’s ashram when the he was meditating, because Indra never wanted the Ashwamedh to be completed. When the horse was not returning King Sagar sent his sixty thousand sons to search the missing horse & found it in Sage Kapila’s Hermitage. The sons of Sagar thought Kapil Muni stole the horse and blamed him for it. On this the Muni was annoyed & felt insulted. Out of anger the Rishi cursed all the sons and burned them to ashes.
• On the advice of Brahma Bhagirath who is from King Sagar’s ancestries came in search of Kapil Muni where his 60 thousand brothers souls were in ashes & with the Ganga touching them would be able to attain Moksha & leave for heavenly abode
• This is also the reasons many people perform Shraddha here in Gangasagar for attaining Moksha for the dead souls of their previous generations.
• This is also the reason for the Holy Dip & Sahi Snan facing Kapil Muni’s Temple. Where Kapil Muni with all his powers who can burn anyone into ashes if he is insulted & also blesses them who respects others & helps & whoever follows the path of Dharma & Karma.
