Hey guys, I love how many comments and questions came up this time around! I knew this one would get some rumbling and grumbling about pronunciations. A few things to address since they've been brought up a few times: -I had more than one discussion with family on whether or not the song should be "Ganon with One N" or "Ganon with Two Ns," and we felt the One sounded better. I lampshade this in the middle of the song though because it is a little odd. -The "Gannon-Bannin'" with two Ns near the end is intentional, as it's referencing one of the earlier Zelda memes that became a whole thing. "Gannon-Banned" was what you'd say to someone who spelled Ganon with two Ns in the middle; it was a whole big website and everything and it'd be a disservice to not have a nod to that in a song about it. Since it's a proper name/term that includes the two Ns, I kept them there. -Brigitte has a little more nuance than I originally thought, apparently! The main thing I was addressing there was that it wasn't pronounced like the name Bridget (as I once believed). -Arceus sounds like it's probably a Japan/US distinction so it's more accurately kind of a Dedede situation. Personally I think going with whatever's localized generally works better for communication. -Lums is a weird case since apparently they're "Luhms" in Rayman 3 but officially have been corrected/retconned to "Looms." -Giygas was a shocker to me, a huge EarthBound fan. They say it with a long I in an old EB commercial but according to localizer Marcus Lindbolm, it is indeed with the long E (based off of Mother 1's "Giegue" [GEEG]). -I love Wreck-It Ralph but Capcom has confirmed that it is indeed Zan-gi-ef since then. To be a pedantic little shrew, Zangief is also not "bad guy!" -Even though Ganon is quite certain of himself with these, that doesn't mean I'm always a fan of the official pronunciations! I just like the idea of him getting twisted in knots over this, but you do you. Personally, I vastly prefer the way "Zebes," "Tidus," and "Rydia" sounded in my head. I had to do some soul-searching after hearing the official pronunciations of those... -The only one that really drives me crazy is hearing Ocarina pronounced with a long O! ;)
@webbowser8834Ай бұрын
Honestly my main takeaway from this song is that I really need to add "Pedantic little shrew" to my insult repertoire.
@GameMasterKyroАй бұрын
Actually, it turns out "ocarina" is also a dialect thing. It seems that some regions (read: America) don't commonly use short O sounds such as in "pot", and in those regions the "ah" sound is accepted. However, due to its Italian origins, the "oh" sound is the "true" pronunciation (as long as you don't stretch it out too much).
@UltraLuigi2401Ай бұрын
Mario also has nuance, as the true correct pronunciation uses a vowel sound which is absent from many English dialects, including the most common British and American dialects. This causes most people who only speak English to hear Mario's name with whichever vowel they do use which is closest, with main issue being that the correct vowel is almost exactly in the middle of the vowel sounds of the words 'cat' and 'car'. For reasons which are beyond me, British people are more likely to hear the former while Americans are more likely to hear the latter. Basically, both pronunciations written at 2:18 are equally wrong.

Cannon - Thing that fires cannonballs Canon - Event that Occurs in a Published Story What They have in Common: Both Are Capable of Sinking Ships
@jessehunter362Ай бұрын
Actually not really! From what i've seen, fairly few ships are truly canon-compliant, most of them can weather being disproved in canon fairly well by just focusing themselves around aus or in a small, ambiguous window within canon. For example, Silvergifting, from the Silmarillion: it is impossible to say that they did not at least break up in canon, given that sauron murdered celebrimbor, but lots of fic and art are made for the ambiguous nature of their middle-years, or imagining ways it could have gone differently. If tolkien came back to life to condemn this ship specifically, I doubt many of us would stop caring about the interesting dynamic he wrote, bc he did write it once, even if by accident.

I really appreciate the Gannon-Banned ref at the end!!! That said, Arceus sounding like the buttocks as called in England is correct and a direct transliteration of the Japanese name, as almost all legendary and mythical Pokémon are. But the English anime decided to pronounce as Ark instead of Ars, so both are technically correct and acceptable pronunciations. Should have had the same treatment as King Dedede. Plus, I notice you included the CD-i games as well as at least one Smash Bros. game in your 14 times Ganon’s been thwarted. If you’re going to include those, you should really consider all 20 times he’s been thwarted, not just 14 of the 20.

Finally someone acknowledges Dedede's name pronunciation! I know it's established as "dee-dee-dee" in the west, but it still bothers me knowing the original is "deh-deh-deh".

Arceus is quite the name to not only tackle, but pass over afterwards, not even Pokémon themselves have a single pronunciation.

Imagine in another game, the thing Link is trying to stop is Ganon's ultimate weapon, the Ganon-Cannon, or, as it is colloquially known, the Gannon.

Finally! Someone who knows how to say "Lums!" They say it's pronounced "Looms" in the Rayman Origins manual, but I don't think many people read that.

If nothing else, this will help me remember it’s Stickerbush and not Brush. And for one of my own- It’s ElectrodRome, not Dome. There’s an R in there like Rome. (I hope Professor Dragmire will forgive me if I still say Guy-gas since that’s how I’ve heard the name for decades at this point, though…)

@@kirbywithaknifeisawesome6028His name in Japanese is ギーグ, which was translated in the original Mother as Giegue (also spelled in the JP version of Mother 2 as Gyiyg) and would be pronounced "Geeg" (with a hard G) or "Geegu". So it doesn't really matter how you pronounce Giygas because that name was made up in translation anyway.
