Another quality Owl production, I really appreciate how you go into the nooks of Japanese culture to give context. There's a ridiculous amount of subtlety in it and unless one has been steeped in it, no amount of anime watching really gives a broad enough cultural understanding. I especially like how you overviewed that shut-in 'game show' as I had heard a little of it when I first read Gantz but had no idea how really insane it got. Wish I had more insightful things to post but its been a long night. Thank you again for sharing your inspired love for this series, and bless you for your wit and tact.

ok i finally was able to finish this Video. Thank you for shining light on all the cultural aspects being tapped into by Gantz. I thought Bullies basically just running a school was also one of the weird things that Gantz establishes to show a cruel world that the Cahracters live in but now with the context it makes much more sense

I remember reading it one day, and continuing, and continuing... and then I got it, it really hits you hard, it feels like watching the worst(and best) of humanity, and the realistic look of the more normal looking characters really helps seeing it through their eyes. I really love the author depiction of humanity in his works, it hits right where it hurts you the most, sometimes its cringe, sometimes amazing, simply humanity in a nutshell

Gantz is really a weird edgy manga. I really love edge in manga form, mostly to laugh at absurdity or have some totally brainless fun, but most don't really grab my attention to finish them or become repetitive to a point of boredom. Also as someone who politically is on the left I shouldn't really like Gantz because it is controversial and sometimes full of bigotry and sexism, but it feels right for Gantz to be like this and change along with Kurono Kei with time. Because Kurono is a little shit without any redeeming qualities at the start just like Gantz being just another stupid manga using SA not even as plot point but because it want to use it. It's nihilistic and sometimes pointless but after some time you really appreciate staying and reading it more. Kurono also is one of my favourite characters in manga with better character development than most of MCs and have easily one of the best relationship in medium. Gantz can make people to care for characters, stakes, victories or crushing defeats to make people cry or feel joy. One of my favourite manga ever and favourite edgy manga. I'm happy you will talk more about it
@Kropothead5 ай бұрын
The left can have a little problematic manga, as a treat. There’s a lot of media that’s aged real poorly in that respect, but still has merit in other regards. Lovecraft had some abhorrent views on race, for instance, but I still like a lot of the concepts and tropes he uses.
@owiec82405 ай бұрын
@@Kropothead I'm not saying problematic media has no merit. There is many movies, games, anime, books or manga which has problematic elements or authors are shitty people which are still good or worth trying.

31:40 it’s probably a combo of several things. 1) I’d say it a common old school technique, making a white or black border around a character(s) to make them stand out from the background. You could get that look by dry brushing or scraping away screen tone if using that. 2) I know with american comics there are “tricks” used by editors to clean up work after they get it from the artist and might not have time to have them fix it. It’s something fast they can do or have someone in house do. A clear foreground/midground/background is usually the goal. Your example pic it is pretty muddy artwise. 3) Older photoshop didn’t have the masking tool but a filter call extract and depending on your brush settings, that fuzziness was from the default setting.

I'm not sure if I already asked the question but what is the thought process when deciding which manga you want to make a video about? Does it have to be about horror or adult/mature themed or does it have to be weird/niche 🤔 Do you consider reviewing stuffs like GTO and such? 🤔 I think your life story with Japan and such add more to the reviews, all these specific anecdotes about Japan are truly interesting and there is always something to learn, the fact that you're not condescending about it helps too( because I sure know a bunch of youtubers who would be condescending when it comes to knowing more about a specific subject than their audience ). Anyway! I havent finished the video yet, I didnt know Gantz was "banned in the west" , or is there anything I didnt understand? We had them in France that's for sure. Oh and another manga I would loooove to see getting more attention is Fuli Culi! Not the anime, the manga by Hajime Ueda...there is nothing quite like it, and its only 2 tomes. Great video so far,as always 👍
@frightranker6 ай бұрын
That's a fair question. It's a mix of 'I think I could do an interesting video on this' especially since people seem to like me leaning into the cultural stuff, 'this hasn't been done to death' and 'I like this manga'. GTO? Gantz wasn't banned, just...a lot of people have problems with certain scenes (oh boy you'll see why later) and also mostly forgotten.
