I know this video is old, but do you have any tips for learning German? What resources were most helpful? I’ll be an Aupair near Nuremberg soon. I do plan on taking language courses while I’m there.

I did GCSE German, then took a language course whilst au-pairing but mostly I picked up the language through immersion within the. Enjoy your time in Nuremberg! I am going back out to stay with my au-pair family as a house guest in August for 2 weeks . I now take German as part of my degree which is mad!! I will graduate next year with BA Geography with German.

Hii I'm thinking of doing this when I'm older but isn't it scary first going on your own to somewhere unknown and stay with people you don't know. What if they are unsafe? Just my worries for my future 🙃

Hi Eve! Yes I 100% understand where you're coming from - it is scary but I think sometimes you've just got to trust people and go for it! I had spoken to the family I was au pairing with before I went so I did know them a little bit and I definitely wouldn't recommend going if you don't know the people. However, that being said there's always a bit of risk involved but sometimes you've just got to give it a go!!

what all are required to be an au pair ? is au pair training compulsory? and driving license or cooking ?

There is no formal training or requirements, just a love of children and a willingness to be part of the family. I was interviewed by the mum over facetime, so I knew the expectations, daily jobs, time off etc. I met the children and told them a bit about myself. I did not cook, but other au-pairs did, I did not drive but I walked to pick up the little one from nursery, I did lots of dog walking, playing and homework help with the older children.

When I went out to Germany I had done GCSE a couple of years earlier so I was a high A1/ low A2 and when I finished my A2 course there I was a high A2 (all according to the European classification of language levels) hope this helps!!

You probably could but it depends on the timing of your classes and when you’re looking after the children!

No not at all! I’d done GCSE in school but nothing for two years and I just picked it up as I went along and did a course whilst I was out there!
