the man is playing a god damn 8 string fanned fret guitar, and he is playing it well. he is clearly a boss.

I'm trying to get my head around the geometry of those "frets"! I suspect no frets at all, they are painted illusions ? A major fretting joke perhaps......

@@rogerantonybennett5272 nah, it allows for a different scale length for the lower strings, so that they can have proper tension and not sound "flubby" . Ibanez currently does them, kiesel, abasi, and a bunch of others now.

jimi would've fuckin loved this. I wonder how often they play it, they performed it when I saw them a couple weeks ago but it was different

I never tire of this video. Skerik, Charlie hunter and Stanton Moore! Shame Dillon doesn't really get to rip it, as he is at the same level as a percussionist! Absolutely live GAT, definitely changed my life musically...

The first time I heard Skerik play the saxophone like that I spent ages scratching my head wondering how they managed to get a guitar with such extreme sustain and attack, it was only some time afterwards I realised it was infact a highly distorted saxophone and not a guitar 🤣🤣

Check out the neck on this guitar. Slanted frets. I've never seen this before. Does it somehow help the tuning or the finger positioning?

Top 3 strings are bass strings, he's playing bass and guitar at the same time. Charlie Hunter.
@SalimSivaad3 жыл бұрын
I know you asked 9 years ago, but just in case anyone else is interested: the fanned frets allow the bass strings to be a longer scale than the treble strings. The longer a string is, the lower it can be tuned without losing too much tension and becoming slack. This gives the bass notes more volume and projection.

James, Couldn't agree with you more. I've been playing 47 years and also teach....and let's face it, some of the best guitarists in the world sit while playing, they're called Classical Guitarists..... On point with BB King and now Johnny Winters takes a seat. One of my biggest beefs over the decades are people who write reviews on guitarists but don't actually play the instrument, i.e., "Air Guitar"..... I prefer sitting as well.

At the end of the day - I'm there to listen to the music being played, not for them to entertain me with antics and theatrics. Granted, there is a market for that but these guys aren't playing to that type of crowd. One of the times I "saw" Charlie play live (at a little hole in the wall in Providence), 15 of the 20 people in the room surrounded the stage and kept shouting and trying to talk to him while he played. 2 songs in and he left and didn't come back. They have no idea what they missed
