How to repair peeling on epoxy floor
@levigarrett86744 жыл бұрын
Im a contractor who specializes in applying waterproofing coatings,you can increase the strength of the epoxy garage floor coatings where it wont crack or peel for decades,after applying your 1st coat of epoxy approximately 30 mil thick in 3ft wide strips you roll in 36" wide polyester reinforcement fabric used for plaster,drywall or tar roofing coatings,be sure to use the yellow polyester fabric vs the black because black is impregnated with asphalt,im on the 5th year of my own heavily trafficked garage and its never cracked or peeled,my biggest job using the reinforcement fabric was a 350,000 sq ft factory floor after the machinery had all been bolted to the floor,i sprayed that epoxy on for the prime & first coat,we used 1/4 inch notched squgees to spread out the final clear epoxy coat followed immediately by men using paint rollers to spread the clear epoxy even and uniform,we gave a 3year guarantee against any cracks or peeling which is a full year longer than the manufacturer warranty,that was just over 4 years ago and the floor still hasnt cracked or peeled while under traffic by robotic fork lifts.

I have a 12 year old Valspar epoxy. It is finally coming up due to vehicle wear. Could I use your suggestion over the old coat when I redo the floor?
@brandocommando44592 жыл бұрын
@@sgt.grinch3299 if you are putting epoxy over epoxy, you would want to grind off any shine that would be left on the previous floor. Especially if you may have used a urathane coating. But if the old epoxy is coming up from the concrete, then your best bet is to remove all existing epoxy and grind the concrete.

I did my garage floor with RockSolid coating by Rust-Oleum about 11 months ago or so. And I am not very happy with it. What Rust-Oleum does not tell you outright is any sun that might hit the floor, will fad the coating finish. I have an area of about 2'-0 x the width of my double car garage door that the sun hits and its now faded. Worse, and much worse is when you park your car in the garage and it condensates water on the floor... and the water sits on the floor and waits to evaporate,,, the water will lift the gloss finish right off the coating. When I called Rust-Oleum and reported the problem,, they informed me that these 2 conditions will damage the coating??? Where in the fuck is it posted that plain water will lift the gloss top coat? Or the Sun will fad the coating??It sure as hell isn't listed on the coating description! Don't waste your time, don't throw away your money on RockSolid garage floor coating

Whatever material you choose, make sure the preparation is done properly. Most of these companies tell you to acid etch because it’s easy, acid etching does not work, you need to diamond grind or shot blast your floor before any epoxy coating. If you don’t grind or shotblast, it will fail. That simple.
@tycarnine38553 жыл бұрын
My boss has been doing the acid etch for years, and it's worked so far? What makes you say otherwise? I'm just curious.
@ConcreteFloorSolutions3 жыл бұрын
@@tycarnine3855 Because its simply not as aggressive as a mechanical scratch in the concrete and every failed garage floor we were hired to redo was acid etched. You might get lucky, but for the most part, it doesn't hold up.

@@tycarnine3855 From what I run into, as soon as days or up to a year. The bottom line is acid etching doesn't do anything for the areas that were oil or petroleum stained within a garage or any slab for that matter. As it does not penetrate oil stains etc, the only thing that prepares the surface correctly is mechanical preparation which is diamond grinding or shot blasting. You may get lucky on new concrete that doesn't have oil stains. Plus, thats not even mentioning the environment effects of pouring acid on a floor and rinsing it to wherever the water runs. Not very environmentally responsible.

I haven't seen a paint yet that holds up to the the demands of garage life. Hot tires turning on it and chemicals such as brake fluids and oils will have it looking bad in no time. Epoxies with urethane top coatings are a great solution, but require proper floor preparation (concrete grinding) for adheasion and you need to mindful of the working time once you mix the components to apply. Stain can be an easy solution if you like the look. Be sure to put a concrete sealer on after staining though to help to protect that finish and even apply wax from time to time.

I'd like to put a nice finish on my garage floor and have been considering an epoxy for a few years, just haven't gotten around to it yet. My biggest concern is that I have two dogs who are getting up in age and have started urinating on my garage floor. I realize I'll need to treat the urine before doing anything else, but I'd like to make certain that future urination won't affect the epoxy (or whatever flooring finish we go with). It may sit for up to 8-10 hours depending on when the dogs do this, but not much longer than that. I'm also curious about the cost of having this done (3 car garage). Any suggestions?

@jesseblankenship39234 жыл бұрын
Mario Adragna I agree completely. In my previous home, I diamond etched the floor and put down the best epoxy coating available. Within two years I was repairing areas where tire heat caused the materials to lift. In my current home, I installed Swiss Trax. That was six years ago and the floor looks brand new. No wear, discoloration or any other deterioration problems at all. The floor is not slippery when wet and rain and snow simply pass through the tiles and drain out the doors through the built in drain channels. I am so glad I went with this product.
@zwild11605 жыл бұрын
Not sure the Incstores flooring is going to keep water and other fluids from getting to your substrate. Which can lead to mold and other issues. Your not going to get fluids out especially oil without taking up the flooring. They didn't even list Advanta flooring tuff-seal tiles which are used in industrial and home situation. They guarantee no oil or water will make it through cause they have a unique interlocking system that includes a channel to keep fluids on top. Garage tech and like tiles are useless if you plan on working on vehicles. Any fluids on the floor are going through to the substrate. If you use the open designed ones small parts are going through along with any liquids. Don't drop anything on the open style that weighs more then 10 lbs. or so as it's going to crack. The biggest issue is the liquids. Your not going to want to tear up whole sections to clean and dry the substrate. Looks nice but not very practical. Don't go by what you see used on many of the popular Velocity/ now Motor Trend shows. They are given the flooring by RaceDeck.

Can you give some pointers on how to prep the concrete? Thx.
@machone75805 жыл бұрын
@@Heretic_Wolf Sure. Clean the floor well (get oils off) and etch with a strong solution of muratic acid. I used 50/50 muratic/water in a 5 gallon bucket. Apply with a cheap sponge mop. Rinse off. The etched floor will take at least 3 days to dry enough before you can coat it. DO NOT RUSH THE DRYING. Make sure it is dry first before you coat it. Apply your coating. (1 or 2 coats) To look it's best, Rustoleum really needs the clear coat after you you apply the paint. The process will be expensive and take the better part of a week to complete, but it is worth it. Regards.

Trung Le, I used Rustoleum on both occasions. I know it's not the best stuff out there but I was on a budget. Both garages were new so I did not have to grind them. I did very thoroughly clean them and etch them with acid. Very, very important, let them dry completely. That might take a couple days. DO not get desperate to get it done, be patient. On both I used just one thick coat instead of two and on both we applied the flakes too. Also very important, do not forget to use the anti-slip powder. On some products it is optional. We tested a small part of the second garage without using the powder and when wet that part was actually dangerously slippery. Also, follow the temperature guidelines carefully. The second time we did it on a very hot weekend and the product dries much, much faster than you imagine. With years both showed a bit of wear on the hot tire spots. It's not the most professional job but it it was affordable. Good luck!
