Level Up Your Shop: shopnationstor...
I FINALLY got around to upgrading my lights in my shop. I had 2 small fixtures that were OK for a garage, but were definitely not enough for a workshop. I installed 9 Barrina T8 LED fixtures distributed around my shop to dramatically increase the light output as well as more evenly light the space. Overall I'm very happy with the results and this video will show you how I did it!
Shop lighting is often overlooked as a critical component to a well functioning space. Having enough light is critical for craftsmanship and safety. If you are looking to upgrade your lighting setup to a high efficiency LED array - don't miss this! Barrina makes some very low cost lights readily available through Amazon. Be sure to check the links below.
Thank you to the sponsor of today's video, NewAir, who make really awesome portable space heaters for garages and workshops. The little 120V heater I used for this build is absolutely perfect for those cold days working in and around the shop. Details below!

I'm like you I'd like a lot of light in my work area. I have a ton of fluorescent light in my garage right now. Where I live we have very cold Winters and half the time most of my lights won't come on for the fact that it's too cold in my garage. So this winter I'm going to use the same LEDs that you are using. I'm tired of having to go out into the garage and waste my heat for an hour just to be able to turn the lights on. You are the second person I have seen using these lights. I am convinced now that this is the way to go. I enjoyed your video and look forward to your next one.

I upgraded my 2 car garage shop lights to l.e.d. back in June of this year. I love it and what a huge difference in my woodworking finishes & stains. I bought (4) 4ft LED light fixtures (2 lights per unit) at 5000 lumens each. They are linked together and Wired into the original light fixture in the ceiling on a single switch. It does not interfere with the garage door opener. My lights came from Walmart and Total costs was less than $100.00. CONGRATS on a super job and the baby is getting big.

Took your recommendation and wow! As you said for yourself I should have done this years ago. People have complained about the mounting brackets but I have no problem with them. The one bummer is the cord with on/off switch can’t be added to so switch has to be about 3 feet from light which is 6 feet from ground

I recently upgraded my garage shop lights. It was one of the best upgrades I ever did. Made a huge difference for not a lot of work or money. And I’m super happy when I go into my garage and all my lights come on and it’s super bright now. I used to have 4 t8 fluorescent bulbs to light 425 sq ft. It was too dark and dim.

I installed 16 5100 L bulbs in one section of my shop last week super upgrade now the rest of my shop seems dark I thought my shop was well lit prior to the lights but now WOW! I'll need sunglasses in the shop when I get the other 28 bulbs replaced.

I use these in my basement server room. I put 3 on the light socket with an adapter and 3 on the other side to an outlet on the wall. I flip the switch for partial light and then have the second set powered by a smart switch so I just give a voice command they come on. These are good lights. Nice install.

So i did something similar but i put more outlets in the ceiling. I ended with 8 outlets and just plugged the leds into them. But it also allows me to add a drop for extension cords in several places. Lights make a HUGE difference when working and filming 👍🏻

I had a couple of 4-lamp floros in my shop that were replaced with 4' LEDs, some from Costco. A remarkable difference. Totally agree that more light is better. Didn't bother calculating lumen/ft^2. Simply installed as many fixtures as possible. As I also work on automotive paint, the lights in the center are either a warm or mixed spectrum. Used a cold spectrum on the side lights and the lights above the benches for the machine restorations. Seems like I can see more anomalies in the metal with a cold light vs paint that prefers a warmer spectrum.

We just built our house and I went over the top on the electrical(commercial/industrial electrician by trade). I put a 100a sub panel and plenty of circuits throughout our 1280 sq' attached garage. Lighting wise, I put switched receptacles in the ceiling and ran 5 8' strip LEDs per row(3 row, 15 total) like these. 5000k/7200 lumen/each. I think the I think they inflated the lumen numbers a bit though. I have installed 7000 lumen industrial lights(expensive) on jobs and they are brighter than these. But these are still eat bright and my garage looks like daylight!

I don't know how it is in the U.S.A. but in Belgium we wouldn't be allowed to put a plug box connected to wires for lighting. Since we use 1.5mm thick wires for lighting and we need to use 2.5mm thick wires for plugs. But just putting a junction box and connecting the existing wires to the new ones would be possible.

I can't find anything that says Barrina lights are UL/CSA/ETL certified, unlike Hyperikon lights which have the certification info on stickers (seen in pics of their lights). If you ever had a fire and your insurance company found lights without any certification, even if the lights weren't to blame, you'll be very sorry. Also, beware of running ANY wire without an FT rating through a ceiling or wall even if it's for something low voltage like a garage door opener or speaker wire. It could act like a wick and your insurance company will look for any excuse to deny a claim.
