Air Bikes, in my opinion, are one of the best pieces of conditioning equipment for a home gym. They take up little space, they aren't crazy expensive, they're rather maintenance-free,
and they're rather affordable in comparison to many cardio machines.
So, in an attempt to give you the best air bike for your money, we brought all of them in house to test and review. We have all of the top options as well as some that are lesser-known. This includes the Rogue Echo Bike, Schwinn AD Pro, Concept 2 BikeErg, Assault Bikes (all of them), and others.
If you want a fan bike, we have a recommendation for you regardless of your budget.

I have two Schwinn Airdyne AD Pro bikes and two Rogue Echo bikes at my gym. People always go to the Rogue bikes first. I like both bikes but prefer the Rogue Echo bike. The Rogue Echo bike feels more sturdy when you ride it and it doesn't squeak and creak like the Schwinn bikes do (I have had my Schwinn bikes for longer though). Like you mentioned, a couple members at the gym (5' tall) can't comfortably reach the pedals on the Rogue Echo bike because the seat doesn't go low enough, the Schwinn does. I like the handles of the Schwinn but I can't stand the huge design flaw in the pedals. The right pedal of both bikes easily comes loose and wobbles. I have to tighten them often and even purchased new pedals because I thought something was wrong with both. I still had the problem after replacing them. Also, as I type this I'm waiting for a belt replacement because it's slipping on one of the Schwinn bikes.

Now there’s an opinion I trust. Thanks Alan! When you say “on both bikes” you mean on both the Schwins, or on both the Rogue and the Schwinn the pedal comes loose?

It is important to remember that pedal threads are different from left side and right side. The right side pedal has a right-hand thread (removes counterclockwise, installs clockwise). The left side pedal has a left-hand thread (removes clockwise, installs counterclockwise).

We have the Rogue Echo Bikes, the Assault Classic, the Assault Pro, the Schwinn Airdyne AD8, and the C2 BikeErg. 1. We really like the Rogue Echo as it's really sturdy and over-engineered. But rightly put, smaller people find it harder to mount and wrangle. 2. The Assault Classic are rust magnets.... all our 5 classics started rusting 2 months after delivery in our humid climate. And don't get me started on their monitors: the bottom panel (the start stop up down enter buttons) stops working after awhile; this is a known problem but the peeps at Assault keep saying it's a very small percentage but they readily sent me 20 pieces of replacement parts for us to repair the monitor ourselves. All our Assault Bike classics had the bottom panel replaced at least twice. But rightly put, the Assaults' ghost riding ability does help you survive a bit during WODs. 3. The Assault Pro is a much better bike: Much better power coating, plastic parts at the right areas, they rust so much less. However the chain drive is harder to access for maintenance. The seats can be adjusted lower so shorter people can use them, but their handles are the same height as the Classic so the same people will have to pump in an awkward position. The seats are also wider and more comfortable than the classic. The best part of the Pros is that the monitors work so much better and are much less prone to the same problems as the Classic. 4. The Schwinn Airdyne we feel is better for mobility or height-challenged people due to the positioning of the handles and seats, and probably better for the casual gym-goers rather than CrossFitters. They do creak and squeak somewhat but I don't think they are meant for super strongmen like Alan to wrangle :). Oh yes - they are the only ones with a water bottle holder. 5. The C2 BikeErg: hate them. It's good if you want to watch a film while riding some distance, however the seats OMG they are so bloody uncomfortable. You might want to replace the seats with something more comfortable if you plan on sitting on them for more than 30 mins. 10:39 This is the picture of the Assault Bike Elite, but the price is for the Schwinn Airdyne.

My first Schwinn was in 1989. It had a lifetime full replacement warranty. By 1998, and after what seemed like hundreds of thousands hours of use, it started getting noisy. Full new bike, no cost. In January 2021, I bought the AD Pro because, during pandemic lockdowns, I needed something super quiet in my condo apartment. It’s a beast and I love it. I do five one-minute rotations with the grips, underhand for the biceps, overhand, flat palm pushing for the tris and chest, neutral grip for the last and, look ma, no hands which feels like a great upper body workout. My downstairs neighbour has never heard it or felt any vibrations. I would say, just buy it.

We tackled assembling the bike as a family project. kzbin.infoUgkxzg0clhbtRf2gGxPkVETFKJJKGqdsorQu The package is heavy, but I have 2 teen boys that were able to move it. The written instructions were great- we didn't need to watch the videos, but it was good knowing that the option was there if we needed it. After we were able to get it set up, the boys each rode 3 miles and I rode 8 and the bike stayed quiet. The display is easy to reset, and you can put it on whichever setting you are using (time, distance, calories, etc). I will say that my butt is a little sore from the seat, but that could be because I haven't rode in a while. While it is comfortable for me, it was not comfortable with the seat position for my friend (could not move the seat back far enough and he slightly looked like a kid riding a tricycle that he had outgrown). He also said that the seat hurt his manly parts. We are going to look for a different seat that will be compatible with this bike for him.I did purchase the Wahoo Cadence sensor and strapped it to the crank of one of the pedals. This will sync with my Apple Watch, iPhone and will import data in to my Health app. Wahoo does have other sensors available other than cadence. I can also keep either my phone or my iPad on the display and they both feel pretty secure.

The Echo is what you want, the Assault has cheap chains that don't last, monitor buttons wear out and make it useless for different options, the bike rusts pretty quickly from the sweat, they need a better paint. Also, Assaults customer support sucks, takes forever to get ahold of anyone and they just make it a pain in the ass to deal with, this is all their products! Rogue on the other hand, has spectacular customer support, they will take care of you! We had a belt that had some fraying on it and they replaced it without question for free, just asked for a photo and small video of the belt. The only thing that needs some light maintenance, is if the seat gets wobbly even with the knobs tight, pop off the black cap on the seat slide and unscrew the cover and their is a another bolt to tighten and your seat is good as new. Just my observations as a gym equipment mechanic.

I keep hearing that the chain drive bikes need so much more maintenance. Well I have the original Schwinn Airdynn (AD4, I believe) in my garage gym. I've had it for about 12 years now, use it regularly, for interval workouts mostly. I've had to tighten the chain only once and that is because it shipped with the chain a bit loose. I've never lubricated the chain. The owners manual specifically states that the chain does not need lubrication because it was dipped in a hot wax lubricant. All that being said I would probably go with the Rogue Echo next just because I keep hearing good things about it, but I've had no issues with my chain drive schwinn.

Great review. I agree the best overall bike you had in that room is the Concept 2 Bike Erg. The best air bike with arms is indeed the Rogue Echo. I have had the Schwinn super duper one and it was not my favorite. I have used the assault and it was nice but I am a fan of the belt driven mechanics for sure. And just to help any of you decide, you can do all metabolic conditioning (SIIT, SISS, HIIT and HISS) on the concept2 and other bikes but it’s really hard to do Subthreshold intensity rides on the echo bike. Thankfully having both was a great move. I use the echo for quick warm up for fluid dynamics and HIIT/ HISS protocols. The echo bike monitor is very easy to customize intervals and has 10/20 and 20/10 for HISS already programmed. The monitor for the concept 2 (PM5) is the same monitor as the C2 rower and ski erg and if you have all 3 they can communicate wirelessly to do a triathlon (Ergathlon) with them!

I'd really like to see an option where you can somehow get both fixed and moving handles. Much like you can move your feet from the pedals to the pegs, it would be nice to go legs only without your hands down by you side. I'm not looking to do long sessions like I would on an BikeErg, but can still see it being beneficial to have for a garage gym owner.

Glad I bought the Rogue echo bike, but for me it could be better. The pedals are quite far apart (q-factor) and therefore I sometimes get pain in my knees. I feel the pedals should be a little bit closer like on a normal bike. Now it feels like riding with your legs spread apart. 2nd improvement would be the data. I would like to see a total on the monitor. How many miles, watts, minutes etc over a longer period of time. Like with the C2 monitors. I always wondered why they didn't make the seat post support higher, but now you mention people can't use it if they are too short. Never thought of that being possible. But I am from the Netherlands and most people are tall here.

$100 difference, plus the shipping cost (not sure what it is, have to imagine in the $50-$75 range) for Rogue. Not extreme, but ~$150 can be a lot of money to people who will use it 1 hour a week at most. I'd prefer the Rogue as well, but would hardly fault someone for valuing the cost savings.

Stairmaster HIIT Air Bike is hands down the best air bike I’ve ever used.. you can go from a sprint to a dead stop to reverse to a slight jog.. effortlessly. It reacts to your output instantly. The rouge Echo bike is good for short burts or sprints, but if your training for endurance it’s definitely not the bike to use.. very heavy to move. I can easily put out 60-72 RPM on a Stairmaster HIIT Bike for 30 -45min and get a good steady cardio workout. Can’t do that on the rouges, seems like anything under 50 RPM and you are barely moving.. 50+ still barely moving and everything is heavier..if that makes sense. Your body isn’t physically moving that much faster for the amount of energy you are putting out.. I would love some Input about this topic, the Rouges are priced very well.. the Stairmasters are 2k Mechanically I can not figure out why the stairmaster is the way it is.. smaller fan, belt drive, idk.. 🤷🏿‍♂️

My fascination w/ the fan bikes started like 6 months ago, I decided to dedicate X amount of time on the fan bike to get to really know it.. on average I spent about 90-135 on the fan bike a week. My wife recently bought a Peloton ( which I like a lot ) BUT it is no comparison to the mighty fan bike, I took a week off from the fan bike and only did Peloton and when I jumped back on the fan bike I was noticeably weaker.. I’ve become so proficient w/ the fan bike that I pretend to box with the arms, different peddling cadence, speeds, forwards and backwards.. great tool. Makes me wonder about some of the other equipment at the gym everyone avoids..

I've owned the Echo and the AD Pro/7/whatever. I bought the Echo bike first. After using it for a few months I decided to sell. I'm 6'0" tall and I always felt awkwardly positioned on the Echo bike. It always felt like I had to over-extend just to reach the handles. A couple months ago I found a like-new AD Pro and bought it at a great price of $250. Although it's not quite as tank-like as the Echo it is still very solid. I haven't noticed much of a difference in movement or squeaking. For reference, I weight 230 lbs and I'm stronger than average. By far, the handles are my favorite feature of the Schwinn bike. Having multiple grip positions makes it my top choice over the Echo. If I want to just cruise then I hold the lower handles that are closer. If I want to get after it then I hold the upper handles that allow me to punch through more with my arms. Rogue really needs to add multiple handle positions.

I think a highly underrated spec that's not looked at enough is q factor (distance between inside of pedals). For myself who Cycles regularly on bikes that normally have a q factor of 150mm makes it tough to go ride on an echo bike which is 250mm apart, my knees dislike it and feels so unnatural. I can't imagine a small female with her legs that wide. The assault bike is around the 208mm mark and is a tiny bit more comfortable on the legs and the response from the chain feels like a real bike in comparison to the odd feeling of a belt. Yes it needs maintenance which takes all of 60secs here and there but allows transitions into cycling alot better so a minimal issue for me. Just my 2 cents for those who also cycle and want to get an airbike. Otherwise the belt driven system is a superior system in terms of maintenance for those who don't cycle and just looking for an exercise machine. I haven't tried the schwinn airdyne pro so not sure what the q factor on it is. I'd be curious if its narrower than the echo and would be more comfortable for most people? GGR maybe you can measure each companies bike for us since you have them at your disposal?

I just measured my AD7 and its q factor is 220mm. Disclaimer i’m not a cyclist and had never heard of that though it makes a ton of sense why that matters! I looked it up quick online how to measure so dont quote me exactly but i measured the distance from where each pedal screws in- the outside of the crank to the outside of the other crank.

Any reviews of the Tru Grit bike? Would also like your opinion on recumbent bikes. I picked up a Nautilus R616 (2017 model) at an estate sale for $50! But I'm now looking at an AD7 that's listed for sale 'somewhere' for $600 which seems to be an excellent deal. Not planning on getting rid of the R616 though as my wife prefers the seated position.

Hey coop. Love the videos. First time poster. Something I'd like to see is a review of some true budget options like Marcy. These bike are much much cheaper than the models you reviewed, and it would be interesting to see if the quality drop is as extreme as the price drop. Thanks!

Why I wouldn't by one yet: 1)You can't lower the resistence/difficulty level unless you reduce your speed - for e.g. you should have the option of reducing the number of blades in the fan if you choose to. 2) Not enough grip options for upper body work out... a) handles height b) distance between body and handles You need to be able to do this exercise with your back straight and chest out for healthy posture and proper shoulder joint alignment... I don't think this is offered yet...

I’ve tried all of these, and the cascade air bike is the best. It’s the same as the vulvan thrasher except more handle options. Also they make a mag resistance version. Very high quality.

For me I get a cardiovascular heart lung pump, but NO taxing muscle pump on a fan air bike. I get a far more muscle pump and tired muscles on a rower, elliptical, or stationary bike. The fan air bike will definitely get the heart lungs taxed, but just not muscles. I recommend getting a rower machine if have room, not a fan bike. If really want an air bike get a used one, I got a 90s schwinn airdyne for $75 even in covid prices era. also look for the DP airgometer fan bike were very popular in 80s 90s and inexpensive used.

I have to tighten and replace parts on my gyms assault bikes all the time. Its the most frustrating piece of equipment I own. I recently purchased a 2 pack of the rogue echo bikes and couldn't believe the difference compared to the assault bikes. I am putting my assault bikes up for sale and replacing them with the rogue echo's. I am hoping they will last much longer in a commercial setting because the assault bikes certainly could not handle my members lol.

Nice! I just got one of those today for a mere $125. It’s in “open box” condition, basically brand new. I am concerned about the lack of resistance though. Have you ever heard of people making upgrades to the resistance of an air bike?
@Maximus5798
@Maximus5798 2 жыл бұрын
@@ryanhill9707 I haven’t had any issues with the resistance. The resistance gets harder the faster you go, and I’ve never felt like it was a problem so never researched it. My only complaint would be that it’s kinda small for an air bike, but otherwise it’s a great little bike.

The schwinn ad7 allows multiple grip positions. It matters but is seldom mentioned. The people that have a problem with a pedal coming loose need to discover blue locktite if the have a problem. You may need to block the left pedal to adequately tighten the right.
