The SVD / Dragunov video took us a long time to complete. The Dragunov is perhaps the most recognizable sniper / dmr out there. I hope you enjoy this video and we do a dive on the SVD and see if we are Soviet Sniper material.

I think that's just a misunderstanding of the Soviet sniper doctrine compared to other countries' sniper doctrine. Soviets wanted a mobile sniper who would move with their squad or platoon and provide longer range fire from a reasonably close distance (just outside the enemy's ability to engage them with regular infantry weapons); while other countries wanted snipers who stayed far away and picked off high value targets, performed reconnaissance, or called in fire missions.

@elburropeligroso4689
@elburropeligroso4689 5 ай бұрын
The DMR concept is to take a service rifle from the rack, accurize it, and have it use the same ammo as used in the general infantry unit. The closest thing in the Soviet sphere of influence analogous to a Western DMR would be the Iraqi Tabuk rifle. Taking an M110 and handing it to the best shot in an infantry platoon doesn't mean it is no longer a sniper rifle; it is still a sniper rifle just pressed into the designated marksman role. The same holds up for the SVD. Also, doctrine for snipers is different for East and West, so using the Western doctrine to classify it is also erroneous. According to Russian doctrine and usage, it is a sniper rifle. If going by Western doctrine for a DMR, an accurized AK-74 with an RPK-74 barrel would be a true designated marksman rifle.

There are actually several optic templates for SVD. You are most likely using one for close range shooting. The original army SVD comes with three templates. Most of the shooting that soldiers did in Afghanistan was over 500m. Mountain to mountain. SVD was used mostly by DShB (Air Troopers) unites and they were called the Caravan Hunters.

Man, army flasbacks comes from this video. Given service in army and having the Dragunov (svd) as your service weapon is one of the coolest thing I remember. Sadly this one didn't have the original pso-1 sight. Absolute blast to shoot over 500 yards, downside are thought that gun kicks like a bitch (has sharp kick unlike sniper rifles) hence the 7.62x54r and mechanism. At the end of the day, first timers had eyebrows in blood :D. Yea about the mags, since the 7.62x54r (same as PKM) casings have lip at the end, you had to make sure to pack the ammo right way or doublefeed would happen. Also the sling would be wrapped on to your left arm and pull it toward yourself if you ever would need to shoot that gun while upright.

If you were using the 4× optic, there is actually a method of using the reticle to hit targets from 100 to 500 without touching the turrets while also having points of contact with the chevrons and the targets. I believe it was rob ski that had a video demonstrating this iirc so you may have had a better, more "precise" time with those longer shots in that case if you didnt try that beforehand. I am sure the point of aim for center mass with the 4× was Top chevron at 100-200 dead hold. Hold on the nose of targets face for 300. Use the legs of the Chevron to place on top of targets head like a hat for 400. And finally use 2nd Chevron at 500 to aim either dead hold or same type of hold for the 300. This was done on a PSL as a disclaimer which has a 1:10 twist and with 148gr ball(ammo it was designed to shoot). Even though the platform was different, and the twist as well as bullet weight was most likely different, one could assume that the results would have been similar with slight deviation though. Still a great video I've been waiting for and it was nice to see the recognition given to it as really the granddaddy of the DMR role. Wonder how a PSL would stack up against the SVD. I have a PSL and am fixing to start walking it out so fingers crossed. Zeroed at 100 with a consistent load I hot 2 MOA at 3 different outings so I hope I can keep it that tight at real ranges

They do make match grade ammo though, my tiger loves 182 grain prvi partizan stuff. the original dragunovs were 1:320mm twist, and used the 7n1 round which was about 152 grains. modern ones, including tigers use a 1:240mm twist rate, to stabilize heavier bullets with different payloads. Try using heavier grain than 174 grain, you may have better luck! also, if you use a PSO-1, not a Belomo POSP, try using the dials on the elevation. the pso-1 is purpose built for the dragunov. the top chevron should always be your point of impact, with the elevation number in hundreds of metres. when you run out of turret elevation (at 10, that is, 1000m) the extra chevrons are meant to be additional holdovers for the next hundreds of metres up to 1300m (very optimistic, but thats the intent). edit: some corrections as pointed out in the comment below (i.e. grain on 7n1)
