@artcosmos74 жыл бұрын
Actually she is smiling and even laughing on stage and in interviews. And it's quite lovely when she does that. She's just not smiling in this video during this song. Maybe she was smiling less in her early career. And actually it is a pretty grim and dark song. But newer live versions of this song can be more powerful and somehow more uplifting.

Garbage had a moderate level of success throughout the vast majority of their career, while still growing and changing things up from album to album. Just my opinion, but that's better than being a one-hit-wonder any day of the week. And their first album... what an amazing first album the likes of which aren't seen by many at all. If you mean "Why didn't they grow bigger after their 1st album?", I think they would have imploded and become that 1-or-2 album wonder. Much better to have a sustained, if not stratospheric career. ...and as a semi-professional Bassist, Daniel Shulman's interpretation of the studio version is just sex. Playing slightly behind the beat to create far more of a groove with the drums.
@delilasloan89143 жыл бұрын
@@therealscarred2112 the bass is what makes this song so memorable...it changes it Into something else all together. I think that's what garbage so good. They had a sound that was very unique to them.

Enveloped and sealed in time. Not even these imposter 90s kids wannabes today understand that this music was imperial at the time. Eventually hip hop, r&b and dreaded Britany and boy bands took the lead. And even today parents let their kids takeover the music selections instead of showing them the way.

F*cking holy sh*t. Many years later this song still tears me apart and this performance probably will be forever its best version. I’ve seen Garbage live 7 times but one show will hold a very special place in my heart until my very last breath. It’s a 20 Years Queer show in Moscow in 2015 and I remember when they performed #1 Crush then in the same version I thought that my life was complete. I could die right there without any regrets because I would die a happy man.

It's written Loreley. It's a 400 ft high rock on the bank of the Rhine (and also a legendary beautiful maiden who committed suicide because of her unfaithful lover by jumping from the steep rock into the river, then becoming a siren who lures shipmen to their dooms with her hypnotizing voice; indeed many boat accidents have happened there due to the stong current and rocks under the water).

'#1 Crush' is one of the most malevolent songs ever to sneak into the Top 40. Sure, there have been songs about dangerous obsession before, one of the most famous being 'Every Breath You Take'. But where that song has a lyrically neutral tone that can be taken in good or bad terms, 'Crush' leaves no doubt in the listener. Whoever she is singing to, (and it might be you), is probably headed for a bad end.
