I have always really enjoyed seeing front loaders with the exhaust routed out the top much more than those routed out the bottom. Something about them with the puffs of smoke high bove the truck has always been enjoyable for me. Also really neat to see manual front load, has a bit of a SoCal feel to it especially with the hard revvs during the dump cycles. Awesome video

Ive recently caught 1 of Venice's EZ-Pack FELs with Carry Can on trash route 2 years ago, Didn't hav time to catch 1 of them on yardwaste route. If you notice the worn out stripes on the cab, seems like an ex-AWS truck. Glad to see that they didnt switch to LEUs! Ive also recently caught only 1 the GS recyclers on commercial recycle route. Ive always hav ben a fan of manual FELs with Carry Cans on residential routes! That CCC rolloff hoist was sick too!

I thought the carry can was weird at first but it works well, light stuff gets tossed/dumped over the sides and the heavy stuff goes over the low front edge. The revs during the EZ Pack bucket cycles were awesome, they really have to gun it to get the bucket to move with any speed. Glad you liked it!

This was a great video! Always enjoy watching a front loader do manual collection. Nice to see it done with EZ packs too. Never seen a carry can fashioned like that before. Pretty cool! Loved seeing all the black exhaust during the driving and enjoyed the revving during the bucket dumps. Hope to see more videos like this in the future!

No, wish I did. I wanted to make sure I had enough front load footage, by the time I was trying for a recycle truck only one was still collecting and the crew wasn't too keen on being filmed.

Thanks! No, the new trucks will be LEUs, they have one LEU roll off so far. The Crane Carriers are the older trucks, I think they used to have some CCC/Wittkes.

Does City of Venice run dedicated garden waste collections or, simply, dump garden waste? In the UK, a number of councils have a dedicated garden waste collection in addition to household and recyclable waste collections. They turn the garden waste into organic compost which they use in municipal parks and sell direct to the public.

They do, you'll notice the first truck is collecting yard waste. State law prohibits yard waste from being landfilled so in most cases it gets mulched (cheaper than composting), often made available to residents without cost. However sometimes this mulch makes it into the landfill anyway as daily cover. Areas with waste to energy facilities will usually burn yard waste along with regular household trash.

georgewuzheer Cool. Where I am in the UK, the local council collects garden waste every two weeks. Grass cuttings, weeds and hedge clippings are turned into compost whilst tree prunings are fed through a chipper to be used as mulch. The Parks Department then uses it on public flowerbeds around the city as well as selling it to the public. Both the local recycling centres have facilities for waste engine oil, car batteries, cardboard, plastics, glass, newspapers and magazines, builder's rubble (which they crush and use as hardcore for road repairs) and garden waste. You can also take white and brown goods there for processing.

Glad I came back to watch this one again. Venice sure does it right! I love these old Mack LEs. First truck was cool - I wonder what year it is. I've heard some old Volvo WXLLs that sound pretty similar to those (the WXLLs were ex-WMX trucks). The ex-AW truck sounded amazing. My goodness that truck sounded so nice! I remember some old Macks in my city that used to sound like that (I recently tracked one down after four years!). Does Venice have any plans to automate? Certainly hope not, seems like most areas around Venice are still manual except North Port. Could I possibly get the link to that single bag stops video of these guys? Really liked that technique lol Great video!

I don't know the exact build year of the first truck but it would be somewhere in the mid-2000s. Funny you bring up WXLLs, the city has (or had, they may have been replaced) a few of similar vintage with Hercules bodies for commercial. The stripes on the cab looking like AW are just a coincidence, you'll notice AW cab stripes are a straight diagonal line down the side of the cab, the ones here are sort of jogged. I haven't heard any rumblings about automation and it really wouldn't make much sense for Venice. All the usual strikes against automation are present there: Tons of old people, small set outs, and a manual collection scheme that is already quite efficient. The local WM yard that runs in the surrounding areas is also very much manual with a bunch of relatively new MRU/McNeilus CNG RLs, but I'm sure you already knew that :)

Hmm not sure which FL sounded better, but thought the light blue and dark blue went well together on the second truck. The bloke driving that E-Z Pack clearly wasn't a fan of the footbrake, chucked the maxi on to slow and stop the truck at every pick-up haha Got a look at the recycle truck in the second clip, didn't manage to get anything of it? Enjoyed watching the roll-off at the very end, first time I've actually been able to see a winch cylinder in action. I also noticed it was only running around half the speed of the actual cable too - does one cylinder complete it's full stroke first and then the other one does? Looked like there was also a chain connected to the can and wrapped around the crossbar between the forks - extra security I figure.

MitchellM15 The E-Z Pack driver was all about speed, very cool to watch. I'll send you a link that better illustrates what I mean. Both revving cylinders on the roll off work together, just that the rail obscures the view of the left one here. The cable is attached to the roll off frame at one end, loops around a sheave at the end of the first cylinder, then back to the top of the hoist, down to the sheave at the end of the second cylinder, back up to the top of the hoist, then down to the container; a block and tackle sort of setup. There are variations using just one cylinder, telescopic cylinders, etc. Without the chain on the carry can I imagine a panic stop could send it sliding off the forks.
