Still got a couple that my father bought in the late 60's. A 300 and a 302. Still fish with 'em too. Great reels.

Back in the 60 / 70 ' it is true to say that there was VERY little real actual choice in decent sport fishing tackle available and very little suited to lure casting with light lures ; really until the mid 70s. When the 300 Mitchell came out it was a true revolution as then EVERYONE had a couple and when used they were proved to be a bit fragile especially near salt - water. They were not as solid a reel as an ABU ; but much much cheaper to purchase from any sports shop back in the day and could be used with any basic rod to hand essentially as a general purpose reel ; I used mine for light bait fishing for bream and travally etc and they gave the fish a fighting chance . Most serious anglers back then tended to upgrade to ABU Cardinal 4 or 44 eventually to get better longer casts and a better drag system if they could afford same . In the 80s the spinning reel became commonplace with many new Japanese companies - like Diawa - and such like getting into the growing reel market with skirted reels and non skirted with the whole section moving . I still prefer the old style myself and they seem to still be popular with many collectors. DAM from Germany also made some Great spinning reels bsck then - like the 110N ; 330 ; 1000 Quick series springing to mind as reliable work horse reels that have stood the test is time. Sadly heavy metal reels are now just vintage stuff ; but in the hands of the expert they are not to be dismissed as mere relics or toys - they still catch big trout; wily bass and some mega perch. Classics of thought outbdesign; application and approach Garcia, ABU & Mitchell were the builders of modern sportfishing as we know it today with super light rods ; braid and soft plastics being currently en vogue. It is still great to try a little vintage metal spoon with a Michell 300 and be surprised what you might hook !!

When I was growing up in Bergen County NJ, we used to go to the Teaneck office near Route 4. You were able to buy refurbished Mitchell reels and Conolon rods. They also sold lures like the Abu-Reflex series. Geez, that was so cool for kids like us. We never left without a catalog that showed the quality of the rods by color. I still use a Mitchell 308. There's NO better trout reel around.

@@garrettlauzon1656 No offence intended, Garrett, but the Conolon rods were made/sold by ABU and/or ABU-Garcia - not by Mitchell. That's how it was in Denmark/Europe - guessing it's the same for the US. If not, do correct me :)

@lukkbox Besides the nostalgia and precious memory "values", vintage Mitchell reels are highly collectible due to the mass quantities produced thus making them affordable to almost everyone.

Why Do spincasters have a better premimum feel with resistance yet ultra smooth reel to them opposed to baitcasters loose feel?? Is SPEC contributes to that feel? Gear ratio, Ball bearings and/or their quality??

Sure. Reels are the part that wind up the line and allow line to be casted out when need.

although manufacturers (bar PENN it seems) have finally clued on, there are more left-hand wind multipliers around, but they have lost potential of millions of $........'s in the last 40 years

This is because of the posicion that 99 % of fishermen adopt whjen using a multiplier...that is opposite to the one used while using a fixed spool

sorry, but casting principles and winding in, should not change with multiplier reel I think people just accepted the idea that multipliers were right hand retrieve -I have converted a lot of fishermen to left hand, and they say their arms ache a lot less after an hours casting I asked an ex-ABU employee who now services old Abu and Abu-Garcia reels, and he said right handed multipliers were an American idea everyone just copied-very few lefthand multis for sale in 60's 70's 80's

Always nice to se someone answer their own question(s) ... LOL ;-) Cause you are absolutely right - or the ABU-employee is. It is all you "bucking" American fishermen who first fished using multipliers, that set the standard, and they were all made w/right hand retrieve, and therefore adopted "as is" world wide. What made the inventors of the spinning reel make it left hand retrieve, I don't know. Google should know.. but my guess is, that some of the initial reels were made to fit on top of the rod. Just as it is using closefaced spinning reels today (i.e. the ABU-Matic's to name the most widely spread/known). And when the reel is put "upside-down"on the rod, the handle has to be on the opposite side of the reel, if you still wanna make it "a right hand retrieve reel".
