My dream. But, alas, I'm only an elementary school teacher. The cost of such a beautifully designed boat is something I can barely comprehend.

You guys really do make some great highlight videos for the Garcia Exploration, hope you continue to put some more out during your passage making and travels. Have watched most of your videos a few times over, never get tired of seeing this type of Sailboat in action

Ok, if it is a center board then it must have tons of ballast along the bottom of the hull ................................. right? Please help me understand.

obviously

@@sevansam -- Ok, so does that mean on a fixed keel boat the weight is in the keel and not along the bottom of the hull?
@sevansam5 жыл бұрын
@@isaiah30v8 Correct. The comparison he's making is for a lifting keel boat. The ballast is also on the end of a lifting keel, and the boat is designed around that. So when you lift the keel to enter shallow water, you also throw off the balance of the boat. That's what he's referring to when talking about 'righting moment' A lifting centerboard does not shift the ballast around, meaning the boat always handles the same way if the centerboard is up or down

Hi Isaiah and Sevansam. The Garcia Exploration 45 has an un-ballasted centreboard, meaning that having it raised or lowered does not appreciably change the centre of gravity or stability. You were right Isaiah - there is a ton of ballast along the bottom of the hull, in the form of cast iron blocks that are embedded in resin on the inside of the stub-keel and hull. About 4.5 tonne. This, together with the form stability from the hull's width, provides sufficient stability, regardless of the centreboard's position. As mentioned by Sevansam, there are other designs which have ballasted keels that telescope up and down (eg, Berkemeyer), or which have ballasted centreboards that swing up and down (eg, Bestevaer). These designs do experience significant shift in stability depending on keel or centreboard position. They tend to be acceptably stable for limited sailing or motoring with their ballast raised and exceptionally stable with their ballast lowered - if not too stable. A good aspect of the Garcia design is that with its centreboard raised it has a very shallow draught and can be easily dried out, or even hauled up a beach in a pinch. Unlike the designs with lifting ballast, the Garcia is suitable for trade-wind sailing with its centreboard/keel raised, in which condition it sails like a big surfboard, with its centre of resistance moved well aft. Users rave about this feature, made possible by the design having separated the roles of ballast and hydrodynamic fin.
