This series is one of my favorites you've done. Being able to see what plants actually look like in a landscape is very helpful. I hope you go back and do another detailed set of videos like these maybe 2 or 3 years from now to show what the plants look like with a few years of growth on them.

Jim, I totally agree that each garden has a unique personality that reflects the preferences and style of the gardener or garden designer who created it. For me, that's what makes touring other's gardens so fun and interesting. I love seeing the wide diversity of plants that can be grown in different zones. ~Margie

I adore these plant by plant videos. There's always something exciting to see. August in the south is when the toughest of things go nuts & the delicates swoon. Native plants in N. Georgia are showing signs of fall, hummingbirds are busy. Watching the birds & pollinators gives me such joy, I'm glad more folks are enjoying it too. Thanks for being a part of that Jim, those of us without tons of space or resources can still make happy places we're proud of! Edit: my last violas have finally died but the snaps in part shade are still blooming.

I've learned so much from your videos. As a new home owner I have been overwhelmed. I had alot of overgrown shrubs that I have had removed and now I have a clean slate. I'm in Greenville about an hour east of you in zone 8a and have nothing but wet clay so I've not planted much but left everything in containers until the fall when I can work on amending this soil .

I like the single plant design. I love the variation. I'm not a fan of swaths of the same plant. I think that's boring but that's just me. When you do single plant plantings, there's always a little hidden gem when you look from a different angle. With swaths of the same plant, there's no wondering of what's around the corner. Thank you for the tour!

Jim, thanks for the tour! Your confusion about the non-blooming cosmos is fascinating, haha! I had the same experience last year - some cosmos bloomed, and some looked like green giants. I was about to pull them, but was intrigued and left them alone. It turns out that they DO bloom, they just seem to be very late bloomers. All of the green giants turned out to be white blooming cosmos. Hope this helps!

Love the Prairie Sun Rudbeckia; thank you for introducing it to me. Also, I think I've figured out who does your filming. It's Bree, no? Reason for guess is you seem to be neighbors, and camera panned to exactly the plant you were describing at one point, which doesn't often happen when nongardeners do the filming.

Thanks for the detailed tour - it served to remind me to give haircuts to most of my containers. We've not had nearly enough rain this summer, and things are starting to look a little fried. (Central Virginia) Many of your tips have led me to severely prune some shrubs that probably would not have otherwise survived this summer, but are ok now. I can't wait to see that hydrangea panniculata next year!

That fatsia is gorgeous! My favorite of the tour, I think. Why wouldn't plants compete (negatively) when you under plant them (the peony/rudbeckia situation you mentioned)? Is that rudbeckia an annual? Great tour, thanks for doing that, definitely time consuming for you but much appreciated. (Spotted the pups' tennis ball at 4:44! Ha! Love a lived-in garden)

Great work, Jim! Thanks for the update on the tree formed hydrangea. I am one following that as I am trying to do the same in my yard. I have just two branches at the top and I wondered why I wasn’t getting any new branching - I didn’t cut mine back! I assume I don’t want to encourage new growth this late. It is a weeping redbud like the one you have but there are branching coming from the base of the trunk and the foliage on those are large and healthy. The foliage on the weeping branches are so tiny and now wilting. Pls do you know what is going on?

The weather being cooler and wet is my only guess, cause last year was very hot and dry. Nevertheless they have been chopped down to like 18in hoping maybe they bloom

My new diamond spire gardenia which was planted back in spring started getting yellow leaves and it has migrated from the bottom to nearly the top of the plant. Flowered once and it stopped. Its the middle of summer and I could not figure out if its because of overwatering or underwatering (getting water every morning)? It gets sun from about 10-3pm. House facing east west. Should I be concerned 😟? I don't think it has anything to do with fertilizer as I have only done it about once a month. Help! Also how do you propogate this type of gardenia with multiple clumps of dense leaves? Its totally different than normal gardenia where you can trim the cutting down to only a few leaves on top.

Maybe by the end of the year when theres not much to talk about, I'd love to know how much it all cost. Including the labour to which u did urself but other homeowners would typically hire out. I'd be interested in how much it is, compared to how much landscaper companies charge. I think it would inspire people to get out in the yard and just get "the job" done. --it's not common to have a industry expert document their yard transformation from literal scratch. So it would be lovely to see the numbers from this unique documentation! Thank you for the consideration!
