If your climate is lizard friendly. I can tell you the lizards here in the Ozarks do considerable damage to bugs. I pray that you can stop the dreaded Flat worms. Your gardens look amazing. Great video. Best wishes for your beautiful gardens. I grow greens indoors in tubs and put them on southern window shelf’s. Perfect for them evidently as they are lush and healthy

You've achieved so much so fast - between the polycrub and the veg garden, it's just brilliant! I actually gasped when you revealed the unwelcome visitors you'd found... they're something I haven't come across here in the garden yet and I'm hoping I never will. I'm so looking forward to seeing what 2023 brings you and the garden! ❤

invasive pests are always a challenge -- I have no idea what a New Zealand flatworm is but I can assume we all have the same kind of nasty pests. Last year I did companion planting idea and I can say it made for the easiest buggy year ever...we get tomato horn worms here and even though they came again this last year...they were 1/2 their size, they stayed on the Kale, not my Tomatoes!!! I planted basil in between all my tomatoes..basil is a companion plant for tomatoes in the garden...as well as in the kitchen!!! All the best for 2023!

Tanya, I have enjoyed your videos for quite a while now. I purchased your book last year and find it so well written and with such beautiful images and useful information. I appreciate your frankness in this video about wanting to shed some pounds and get back into your clothes. We can all relate to that; yet, it takes courage to look at oneself in the mirror and to also be so open about that. That is inspirational. Thank you.

I so enjoy your channel! I live in the desert southwest of the US. Our growing season is so different! In January we are entering our rainy season. My garden is full of tomato plants covered with blossoms. My peppers from bell to jalapeño are producing and broccoli is nearly ready to harvest! I have a heck of a time with any kind of peas or beans. By February I will be canning quarts of tomatoes every week until June. When it gets over 90* the tomatoes will have blossoms but will not have more fruit. Happy New Year!

@dianawilson995, I am in SoCal and have the same experience this winter. Tomatoes, peppers and chard survived the hot summer and are now thriving. But my garden basically stopped growing for 3 months last summer. That was surprising to me. Anyway, it looks like I will be planting a lot of seeds and seedlings in February. Have a great 2023!

Happy New Year. I enjoyed your review and am particularly jealous of your polycrub - we don't have these in New Zealand that I can locate, and they look well suited to the windy area that I live in. I was surprised to hear your issues with a New Zealand flatworm. I had to look this up as I had never heard of it. Maybe it is only a pest in other countries? Always learning! I love the set up of your garden and your 'assistant gardeners'. Not sure I would be happy with them on the table while I'm eating though :). All the best for 2023.

Animals outside their native habitat can become a terrible nuisance. The New Zealand flatworm being one of them. Where they live, in the south island of New Zealand, they are a natural part of the ecosystem. Here, they devastate European earthworm species. So sad.

No dig beds are more expensive at the start though. I've been planning my new garden; a few raised beds and then a bunch of plots directly into the ground. I'm not trying to go broke filling a hundred plus raised beds.
@Lovelygreens
@Lovelygreens Жыл бұрын
Raised beds are different from no-dig beds. With no-dig, you don't need wooden sides. The only reason I have them for my beds is that my garden is on a slope, and it helps hold the compost in. The raised beds in the Polycrub took a lot to fill, though!

Hi and thanks for all your content really love it. I have raised beds too and I just asked my husband about doing exactly this siliconing. He said the water would become water logged? Needed to drain. It had weed matting Inside. I'd be interested in your thoughts here as I find that water goes straight through and dries out the beds a bit. I'd imagine it would be a bit like a wicking system, would retain water. What would you do? Cheers Nadine Australia.
@Lovelygreens
@Lovelygreens Жыл бұрын
If your beds are not waterlogged now, then they won't be by being siliconed. Waterlogging has more to do with the drainage underneath the beds. If anything, siliconing beds will help retain water and save on having to water as often. Probably a useful tactic during hot Australian summers!

I have thoroughly enjoyed watching as you prepared this amazing garden! I was wondering what gasped to your plot, whoever gets that after you will be happy! It’s amazing what a year does when you work hard! We may be moving which means starting from scratch again like we did at our current home. Ugh flatworms!!!! Never heard of those but here in the States we’re being attacked by the invasive Jumping Worms that came from China they say, what’s deceiving about these though is that they look like earthworms! But what you pick them up they jump and wiggle like crazy anna have this light colored band around their necks. They multiply quickly and once you have then that’s it! I worked tirelessly last summer removing them. In tears and so mad I wanted to burn the garden down lol. I think they came in with either mulch or bagged soil. So no matter how hard you try to keep invasive bugs out you just can’t prevent it. You just have to be persistent in keeping in top of them. Now i was told by a landscaper NOT to use fresh wood chips in the garden because they attract ants especially carpenter ants! I never heard this have you noticed that?

Great review Tanya, looking forward to the forthcoming growing season. May I ask what was the cost or the polycrubb?
@Lovelygreens

It's more expensive than a polytunnel and less expensive than a greenhouse of that size. The cost of the basic materials all depend on size of Polycrub you order, and details of that are on the Polycrub website, I believe. We also paid for joiners to put it together which made it more expensive.

Happy New Year. Thank you for bringing the NZ flat worm to my attention, I had never heard of it and will know what to look for now. Reading a bit of info I found from the IOM Government on these worms, it states that setting a trap of black plastic weighted down on the ground should work. I am now a little worried as to what I will find under a 40 x 40ft area of ground I have under black plastic for the last few months. This is in preparation for setting up 7 new no dig beds ready for planting this year. Fingers crossed that I should be clear of them as this is being set on a field used for grazing and I have seen a really high number of normal worms when I ever disturb the soil for any reason. Is there any chance your flat worms came in from your neighbours? Looking forward to your videos over the coming year.

Happy New Year, Tanya :) I've loved watching you develop your garden the last year or so and so excited for 2023! Would it be possible to do some garden to table videos for us? I'm always curious about how all the harvest is used or preserved and looking for delicious recipes x

Try the different concoctions in Korean Natural Farming. They may help with the worms “JADAM Organic Farming : The way to Ultra-Low-Cost agriculture, ULTRA Powerful Pest and Disease Control Solution, Make all-Natural Pesticide (second edition)” I got the Jadam book for Christmas and I am just about to read through it

It's an invasive pest from New Zealand that, while harmless in its own native habitat, can utterly destroy earthworm populations outside of it. Here's more on it lovelygreens.com/new-zealand-flatworms/

Do you have rabbits where you are? I’ve had to put guards at the base of my new trees because they chew the bark. They are a real nuisance.

Why don’t you take cuttings of the plants you want move? I have had great luck with cuttings. That way you aren’t worrying about soil contamination.

Oh my goodness, I’m all for organic gardening but Girl, I would blast that area with every chemical available to make sure they all die. It’s like having a baby, we want to do it all as nature intended but sometimes we have to take every drug available just to survive !!! Xxxxxx

There's nothing on the market that can kill NZ flatworm, or I'm sure they'd be less of an issue. Only manually picking them off, hot water, salt, or alcohol can kill them. It's frustrating :(

@ New Zealand Worm: Dear Tanya, I wonder, should NZW indeed become a problem, if a collaboration between your channel and scientists might enable otherwise impossible research. Bringing together resources and connections of a successful youtube channel, scientific expertise, and a large garden already effected by the worm (again, only in case the whole garden turns out to be effected!) Seems to me a basis for a citizen science project! You work very methodically. You base your approach on tested methods and, you monitor the effects of your work systematically and with care! What kind of citizen science do I have in mind? How should such a collaboration look in reality? The following is only a speculation to set a "frame" for my suggestion! The worm appears to strongly prefer, if not depend on, high humidity. It spreads in such numbers and speed that it is difficult if not impossible to contain. Gathering or chemicals haven't solved the problem. If it is not possible to gather or "kill off" the worms, what can be accomplished with local resources? What if it were possible to create subdivided areas, *"volumes" of soil that are small enough to either be controlled, or managed by conventional methods or, allow for keeping such a *volume long enough free of NZW to the effect that more intrusive measures like a complete change of the arable soil *volume, occur in tolerable frequency. *A volume of 1 to 2 m² of 1 to 2 meters depth and encapsulated in a kind of "bowl of dry soil or rock, dry enough to be intolerable for the NZW. Might it be feasible to create temporarily humid "trapping areas" in which the water can literally be switched off, and which are too large for the NZW to escape? Here (finally...;-) my suggestion: Might there be less intrusive measures that sufficiently isolate small ares that couldn't be tested because of lack of resources? Here comes your garden, your channel, and your highly systematic, consistent and openminded gardening into play. If my "Deworming Castle Pie in the sky" should indeed have living and still breathing cousins, languishing in desks drawers, I imagine a collaboration along the lines of a citizen science project, perhaps financed with a kickstarter or go fund me, that profits from the visibility of your channel and your person! Moreover, in time, should a longer project come out of this, I would imagine other garden owners effected by the worm, might be attracted by your videos, to join such a project. I wish you a happy new year!

There are some studies on them happening in the UK, but unfortunately nothing new on controlling numbers. Other than removing areas where they can hide during the day and picking them off manually. Both I'll be looking at in the year ahead.
