Hello fellow Albertan. What part of Alberta are you in? I am in southern Alberta, dry and hot here.

We’re pretty central east of hwy 2 between Red deer and Calgary.

Adding mulch would keep some of our scarce moisture in the ground and also keep the weeds down. Mother Nature likes her pants on so she is fully dressed in public. I prestart my onions in winter, ie end of December to mid Feb in a single container in Zone 3. Trim to 4" and keep under lights and well watered to plant out in spring. If you have blossom end rot on tomatoes, that is also a calcium uptake problem due to inconsistent watering.

Thanks for the tips. We started our indoors under lights back in February.

I've done onions and leeks too for the first time....definitely growing much slower then expected! But starting to look like they will produce.

This is our second year growing both, this year we doubled the amount of seeds to start. They are definitely a slow grower but worth the wait and effort. Happy growing 😀

Interested in the row that you skipped over. Never seen them grown outdoors in this zone before. Will they mature before frost?
@Gardenwithmezone32 ай бұрын
The biggest obstacle we have with them outdoors is the long days. They require a certain amount of darkness to get them to flower and mature. That being said we have been successful in the past and will cover them with tarps as needed into the fall. Either to induce maturity or for protection.

Hello. I just found your channel. I enjoyed the 2 episodes I watched. Where in Alberta are you located? I am moving from Kelowna (zone 5) to the Cariboo, zone 4 ish, and am worried about being able to grow all the yummy veggies that I am used to. 😊
@Gardenwithmezone32 ай бұрын
It definitely might be a bit of a change. I spent many years working in horticulture in a zone 5. Adjusting to the shorter growing season has been tough. That being said with the help of a green house it opens up so many more possibilities.

Leeks dehydrate in the air really nicely. I have some that i dried 2 years ago. Check out a book called water wise gardening by Steve Solomon.

I’ll have to check that out. Thanks

How do you manage to not have a single weed? Also, I don't see any mulch.
@jaswas772 ай бұрын
Yeah I would have mulch everywhere on there to help keep the moisture in and the weeds down. Plus to add nutrients to the soil.

We pull weeds daily, every time we walk the garden we pull a handful. They are there, they’re just small and hiding in the plants. We will be mulching some of perennial plants in the fall. For the most part we like to plant closely to help cover the soil. Next season we may cover more it all depends on cost and what materials we can get locally.

We have a garden at the church with clay soil and I was thinking of spreading some old hay thick between the rows. Your garden is lovely. We both know how much Joy and help the garden gives us.

If you want your onions to make a big bulb go and ring around your onion with your finger( drag your finger right around the base of your onion gently removing the soil) so that your onion bulb sits on top of the ground with just the roots in ground. Now, it will grow in diameter. Hollis from Hollis and Nancy shows nicely how he does it, and his onions grow huge.

Thanks for your help tip, last summer we had great results with our onions, they’re so far on track to be similar.
