I recently finished enclosing my 10x13 cattle panel greenhouse. If I never grew a single plant I would put a chair in the greenhouse and use it to drink coffee on cold, sunny winter days :)

If you build a short platform in front of the table then you'll be constantly bending and reaching over it to access the table, and blocking where you would like to tuck your feet while you stand at the bench. Also you would be blocking all the possible storage space under the table! There's a lot of space there to utilize for storage. Instead, I would suggest making the table the whole width of the back side from door frame to back wall, and then at the back of the table build a small shelf/platform on top so you can have a second tier of potted plants on. That gives you a lot of storage space under the table and also storage space at the back of the table that is under the shelf. It's nice to be able to tuck your feet under the benchtop when you're working on it so you can get closer and more easily reach the back.

I was anxious for your greenhouse video series to start as I've just finished building my greenhouse. It's 12 x 20, "twin polycarb" walls as I'm in zone 3b. I'm at exactly the same stage; planning what goes where so I can build some structures over the winter and be ready for hardening off in the spring. I will have passive thermal (black water barrels under a bench), but also a small heater that can kick in if necessary. Looking forward to the rest of your series.

I got a mini greenhouse for this winter.It's only 36 inches high but plan on using it for covering my plants if we have another freeze like we did in Texas last Feb.Since all my plants are in containers, I can move them in and out as the temp. allows. I want to try over wintering my peppers plants also.
@sidneyeaston6927
@sidneyeaston6927 3 жыл бұрын
The greenhouse you bought will be useless its size will not retain heat when it gets cold and will bake your plants when the sun shines. Your best bet would be to dig a trench W 3 foot L6 foot D2 foot use the soil to build up the sides make two wood frames 3 foot square stretch polythene over the frames to make lids. the soil at that depth in Texas should keep your plants at a reasonable temperature But check with your local plant supplier or at least a gardener that is local and knows the temperature differential at different depths.
@conniedavidson1807
@conniedavidson1807 3 жыл бұрын
@@sidneyeaston6927 At 72 there is no way I can dig a trench of any kind, build frames. etc. This is a trial and error experiment and it does have zip doors that open for air. Where it is placed can be moved if I need to because it is lightweight enough I can move it if it gets too hot. Most of the winter plants I'm growing can be grown outdoors without cover in my climate. Only if we get another freak storm like we did last year will I have a problem. I can put it on at night and take it off during the day if I want to. I can cover the frame with blankets which I did last year with my plants and saved most of them during 0 degree weather. This mini greenhouse may be useless for your needs, but I'm hoping it may be just what I need.

I love you have a greenhouse, one people with a biggish home garden could fit in their garden too. It looks very sturdy. My question is will you find as the walls arc up and over, will it reduce the height growth of plants, the useable surface of table/benches, looking at it and it seems the centre would be better for taller plants. Look forward to seeing how you go in the internal use of your new greenhouse.
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. I grew in a dome greenhouse and the curved walls definitely impacted the height of plants. I had to grow trellised plants in the middle. That's one reason I'm think of growing in the ground in the front of the greenhouse so I can get the most height, but I know there will be limits.

I noticed from a reply below you made a video of the build and are going to publish it. I really look forward to seeing it. But I do have a couple of questions. This first is why not have a floor and I'm thinking it might have to do with you wanting a bed inside. Also, you mention hardening off your plants. Are you still going to start your seeds indoors with grow lights? If so, is starting your seedlings in the greenhouse not an option? Thanks so much for your help Gardener Scott. @GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 2 жыл бұрын
An extra heat source is usually needed in cold areas like zone 5. Extra insulation can help hold in a little more heat during the important nighttime drop in temperature. Some use extra layers of plastic.

Another thought, you could put aluminum foil along the back wall to reflect the light back into the greenhouse that would otherwise pass through the back wall and escape.

Those are some heavy duty trellis you have on the two sides. The south wall three I would string a net to fill the gap and train plants up both sides of the support beams. Nice that they are straight out from the wall so as to block less light. Been looking at GH's for that one day far off. I think I have come to like the Chinese style with the North wall acting as a solar sink. Even in the south the design could be used against a hill with cooling pipes circulating air via solar fans. Give the less heat tolerate plants some relief.
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 3 жыл бұрын
Good thoughts on your future GH. I'll be installing reflective insulation along with stone and water, as thermal mass to help with the same idea of a heat sink.

Thank you for the info. I have a question maybe you can help with. Just purchased a 10'x16' polycarbonate greenhouse. going to put raised beds in it. Should I put a drainage system under the greenhouse before I build on it? Like a "french drain" tile with gravel was the thought. I was going to use gravel as the floor of the greenhouse with pavers on top of the gravel to walk on. Going to use a gravity fed irrigation into the raised beds. I live in South Carolina so heavy clay is our ground (not very absorbant). So I thought putting in the drainage system would be an idea. Thoughts?
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott Жыл бұрын
If you expect a lot of water in the greenhouse either from outside or in, drainage can help. The gravel will also help hold heat in on cold nights.

hi GS, i am a beginner gardner and i am planning on buying a planta greenhouse and the day after i decided to do this, this video came up on my recommended videos, (i assume this is a planta). i was torn between starting plants in the ground where they may be warmer and growing them in 5 inch or so wide pots where it would be better for the roots when transplanting but they may not be as warm inside.then i had an idea that i have not seen on gardening channels, but am sure someone has tried it because gardeners are smart people. why or why not start seeds in the pots and put the pots in the ground and cover them with a small amount of soil?
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott Жыл бұрын
Hi, Zak. Yes, it is a Planta greenhouse. Potted plants are easy to transplant and is a big reason why gardeners start seeds in pots. The plant is less stressed at transplanting than digging up and moving a plant in the ground. Your idea can be a good one when a greenhouse has warmer soil than outside. Burying the pots can provide more consistent temperatures than setting a pot on a table in a cool greenhouse. If the air temperature is warm in the greenhouse the pots don't need to be buried and that may be why most gardeners don't see a need for it.
