The mountain camp method uses granulated sugar poured on top of a piece of newspaper. You can build a shim or spacer out of 1"x3" pine. I have not found one you can buy online.

I like the idea of there being one less thing to do . I am having a terrible time getting to my hives with sugar water a couple times a week. Can I use this method for Fall feedings before I close my hives up.

+patti mincher hi Patti, you *have* to feed your bees sugar syrup in the fall, this is not a substitute. this is emergency feed in case they eat all their food or can't get to it. maybe you would consider using the 2 gallon plastic zipper bags to feed them sugar, it takes my bees about a week to remove all the syrup from the bag. watch our sugar feeder zipper bag videos: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oH-yaYRsmtmFp80

Hi, Just watching this video. I'm in Alabama and we are finally getting some fall weather. I took honey from one hive 2 days ago and will remove the cleaned up supers in 2 more days. I want to try this method but worried about ants. This seems like a much easier method than sugar water. Do you have any advice? Thanks!

Yes Michael, it’s super simple and can save a hive in late winter. And it’s so simple to do. Put a piece of polystyrene insulation between the inner and outer cover as well.

this is for winter emergency feed. for spring, one needs to feed them a 1:1 sugar syrup in a feeder. i suggest adding Fumagillin to the first gallon of syrup you feed the bees. Then in the fall feed the bees 2:1 sugar syrup until they stop taking it down. Then treat for mites and insulate the hive. thx!

yes, we pull out the dry sugar and put in a sugar syrup feeder to get them through early spring until there is enough pollen and nectar around. thx!

I asked at a local beekeeping supply store about this method and they said the bees would eat through the newspaper and the sugar would fall to the floor of the hive. I've never heard of that - any opinion on that? Also we bought a candy board with the mesh screen - could we just put newspaper on top of the mesh?

My experience and that of many who use the dry sugar method has been that the sugar hardens as it absorbs moisture over the winter. My bees eat the sugar in late winter and early spring. It can be a lifesaver. Sure, some sugar may fall through, but it is a tiny amount. Candy boards are a lot of work, you have to cook the sugar, etc. either use the candy board or the dry sugar. Find a beekeeper mentor who doesn’t also sell bee equipment. 😉

It seems your insulated winter cover is not vented? I flip my inner cover in winter and put rigid foam on top of it so i'm still vented through the inner cover notch.

+Greg Meola Hi Greg, the cover vents through the 3 holes drilled in the front as an upper entrance. flipping the regular cover and adding the insulation works just as well. what I like about the cover I made is the open space for sugar and/or patties. thx! eric.

no, we don't have any honey supers (the wooden boxes with empty honeycomb frames) on the hive in the cooler months, only in summer. and in summer, we don't feed sugar. thx!

According to a bee keeper video this is not how you do it. You lay paper (like a sheet of newspaper page) on top of those bee sections. Then you pour 2 or 3 inches layer of GRANULATED SUGAR not powder all over the paper and fine mist the sugar with water and cover the hive back up. It does several things: absorbs humidity, keeps bees alive, is an emergency food source through winter and keeps bees warm from the winter cold.
