Excellent speaker and fascinating education on how to maintain healthy soil. Particularly helpful to understand the science behind why no-till farming works better and is healthier for the soil. Thank you!

Hello Thank you for the video on Gardening in Clay Soil. The only aspect I have a problem with is on a new planting to add 2-3 inches of compost initially. I am from the East coast and find the soil in Jacksonville Oregon rock hard. In your soil test at end of your video you did not include a one time tilling with compost amendment.

Adding 2-3 inches of compost provides a short-term solution because organic matters break down over time. As to tilling in compost amendment, puncturing the soil surface with a spading fork and allow organisms to help with mixing is also an option. It all depends on how quickly you want results.

I have clay. I want cherry trees. Digging causes water puddle. Someone suggested sandy loam plus humus as a raised mound on top of clay ground, no dig. What do you think?

@@AleyCZ I raised them 1 foot above ground and mixed and with clay. It worked.

Whats a ped? Whats a rut?

I had to google "ped" too. Its not a acronym, its literally "the small chunk of soil that's stuck together by all of this process"

The recommendation seems contradictory. If the soil is covered with mulch, after a few years the organic content of the soil will exceed the recommended 5 per cent.

The difference in applying it to the top is that it breaks down slowly rather than the clay having to do this without enough oxygen.
