in todays episode there are some highs in the no dig allotment garden, however it also has some lows. it's also the last day of owning the Grapevine Garden Plot, so it's possible down to that too.
The slugs have destroyed some crops, the weather is abysmal and I've lost my gardening mojo. it'll come back... the progress is slow due to the weather this year.

Yes, my allotment neighbour who is 86 and been doing it for 50 years (!!) said that this is a particularly bad year which wasn't helped the very wet winter and spring, plus the low light during spring and the consistent low temperatures, especially during the nights which have all stretched into June and July.

I know how you feel with the blur feeling in the garden. My gardens are overflowing with weeds at the moment. We’ve had our roof replaced and it’s been hard to get near the garden, and the rain is driving me nuts. Great Potatoe harvest! Garlic looks good! The dwarf sunflowers are looking so healthy! Hard work to move but it will be worth it in the end! So happy that the potatoes grew well, hope you will like them! 🤞Good looking deep metal beds to fill! The weather has been challenging, especially the wind, like for you, it is a challenge for us too, it dries out everything, despite the rain. You are doing so much, I am not surprised you are finding it challenging. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Renovations work in a house is always hard to live with. When you have a beautiful new kitchen, you will forget about all the hardship. Clever way to dry your onions and garlics! Leeks are looking good! I was so happy to see how healthy is your David Austin Rose! I cannot wait to see the roses it gives you! 😘🌸💕

It’s been a tough year, Danny. The move to the new plot held you back with all that extra work but it’s growing food already! That looked like a leek moth caterpillar. If it was, best to check no more hatchings under your insect netting. The first hatchings of the moth is a bit later than usual this year but the second hatching happens in July (RHS has it wrong). There are definitely three hatchings of the leek moth, not two, in the UK. I’ve seen it. You’re right to advise your viewers to net from seedlings to harvest. The leek/allium moths and miners are with us for good now. It’s ok to take mesh off December/January/early Feb but I kept mine on leeks and garlic and the extra wind/cold protection proved to really help with stronger healthier plants. Fleece over March onion seedlings also helped get them off to a good start. Your garlic harvests are fantastic. 🧄🌱
@TheGrowUpChannel
@TheGrowUpChannel Ай бұрын
Oh thanks for saying about the caterpillar. I best have a rummage under the net! Blinking things haha. Yes I, like you keep everything netted. The only thing I haven't so far is my leeks but I will be netting them this week for sure! It appears we are netting more and more all the time. Danny 🌱

You have done wonders in the new plot. The weather hasn’t helped any of us this year. I just found blight on some of my potatoes so am gutted. We have had loads of muggy, moist weather and it has obviously tipped them over the edge. My main crop Picasso are the only ones affected so far but they are my fave potatoes to grow and usually a heavy cropper. 🥺. On the plus side my beans and peas are doing great, next week was meant to give us warm sunny weather but I have just checked again and now it is going to rain - scream! Great tip re the free water butts. I will check my water authority. Take care. Mags

Slow down Danny! You are doing enough and plus the plots look great despite the crappy weather we are having! At least now, you can just focus on two plots instead of 3. The new plot needed a lot of work doing but Rome wasn't built in a day so take it easy on yourself. My leeks and onions from January still look like chives, had a hard time with squash and trying again to chit some seeds like marigolds, sunflowers, etc to see if it a problem with the soil. A lot of them have chitted so am in the process of transplanting them to soil trays to see what happens. I was saying to hubby today how it feels like a long spring, after a long winter. Very windy too. It knocked over one of the honeycomb tomatoes I have in a pot and some of the small first tomatoes came off! Well gutted. S & S are swear words in our house now! Really wish we had our toad here again this year. Btw, how are the hedgehogs doing? I am taking "you win some and you lose some" this year though and trying to focus on the wins, trying not to overwhelm myself with jobs and breaking my task list into mini jobs for urgent things as I am behind on some stuff. July is a busy month, not just with gardening but for end of school year events. Our childs teacher is leaving this year (1 of 3) and they are all going into private homeschooling (even their godmother is quitting the NHS after 20 years to work for a private co.), so it will be interesting to see who is still left teaching next year. Not sure if it is still a thing but I have seen someone sweep the milk weed with a piece of fabric and the bits stick to it. B&Q sell those kids fishing nets for about £2 and it has an extendable rod. If you put the weed on the bank, the tadpoles can get back in. Maybe lay down a empty compost bag sheet to put them on, to make it easier to pick up the milk weed afterwards? Glad to hear you are able to take some time off work and hopefully you can balance a break and catching up on the plots. The only things I have seen Thames Water offering us is high bills, hard water and E.coli! Anyway Danny, how was your mum's casserole? Did you get to take any leftover home with you? Take care and have a great week! P.s. I think removing the word Channel is a great idea!

Half my radish were bad, though the year before it was 90% so no complaints. Nature does everything in cycles and it WILL balance good and bad. I re-planted some things in may/june, that's doing quite well now. The freezing cold is gone. Should be a good finish to the season. The biggest thing is to always push yourself forward through those ups and downs. Because nature will give you more back than you put in. Maybe not in the micro, but in the macro timeframe it totally will.

Danny, give yourself a break! You seem to have a lot on your plate, as you recounted! Maybe you are trying to do too much. There are pests and bad weather tormenting gardeners around the world. It seems unusual everywhere. Take what you get out of the garden and we can hope that next year will be better. Anything you get out of it is a bonus! My tomatoes are not much bigger than they were when I transplanted them in May! There has been very little sun in my Zone 3 garden also with drought. Now it will be 35C this week with no rain in the forecast for weeks and the wildfire smoke is starting. We are all in the same boat.

Gardening has been challenging in the US, too. Too much rain and cold, then sudden heat wave. Some gardening woes were weather related, but some were self inflected. I had a great onion harvest, except for one oopsie bed. I pulled half a row from that bed thinking that something happened to the onions, because they weren't bulbing. Then I realized I was pulling my leeks! EEK! My potato bags stayed too wet this Spring, so they were a bust. We're eating fresh sweet corn for dinner tonight, though! 🌽🌽 Hang in there, Danny.

Go to bed and have some rest. People who like your videos will still look at them. Some plot videos I am watching from 2017 and lots of the people gave up. Jobs and hobbies doesnt work sometimes and you end up with a big plot you dont have time and energy for it. In plus in our TNP our plots or gardens must be tidy, no plastic, no fences and no burning, so sometimes I am really sock with some plots in England, sorry, and amount of garbage around them. Moan away friend, I feel you. I wish your weather would happily warm up for you and give your plants some needed sunshine. And I wish my weather would cool down. We've been triple digits for over 10 days now and per the forecast we have at least 8 more days ahead of the same. Hopefully we topped out at 119 farenheit and we just stick closer to a cool and breezy 100. LOL. Although the UV index is right under the extreme mark, the watermelon, squash, and cucumbers seem to be thriving. So that is a great thing. Too bad I didn't plant any eggplant or okra. I would love to take a break from this weather and go help you, but then all my plants would die, and that is unacceptable. I have a few late starts, like luffa, winter squash, and flowers, but I'm scared to put them out and hoping mother nature will exhale soon with a cool down a bit of rain would be fabulous. Your vertical drying rack...what a great idea, I love it! And I'm glad you are taking an exhale too. Best wishes for your time off.

Well…let’s all Cry together! It started out a Great spring after a year of severe drought and then…it rained…and rained and still more chances of rain. Then the mosquitoes hatching in mid air and humidity, no wind except during storms and little sun. I’m stuck inside because it’s too hot and humid to dress up with head net, long sleeves, headband and sweat dripping in your eyes. It’s impossible! The rust hit the hollyhocks and mildew started on bee balm. Worse yet is the tomatoes are skinny and short!!😮. What’s up? This has never happened to me in all my years of gardening. The potatoes are collapsing earlier than expected and they were really healthy and they look like the tubers could be small. Some flowering shrubs bloomed 2 weeks early. Debating on whether I should throw plastic over onions and garlic. I can’t do everything as it’s too much. A few things are wins, but the main crops we preserve are not looking promising. Then I thought maybe things will change soon and the sun/heat will return. We hope to get a harvest also. We are also depressed not only with the weather, but the politics here in US. I just said last year we were stuck inside a few days from heat dome and CN smoke. I would take the drought over this jungle atmosphere with all those clouds of mosquitoes-😭😭😭. I shouldn’t cry so much as I’ve seen the size of your slugs-Ugh! There is No Way I could stand in the garden like you are-I’d need a blood transfusion 😵‍💫. I’ve got deer, rabbits, skunk, coon and now a possum got wise and dug under the garden fence. I could understand last year in drought, but come on! You had a great garlic harvest! And the sweet peas 🤩 I just tried for the first time and they aren’t blooming like yours and it wasn’t from lack of water. I’m hoping my garlic aren’t rotting, I better check. Does aerating ponds help reduce algae? We’ve had 33 inches of rain since March not including winter rain and annual avg is 37” in WI, US. We wait all winter and now still stuck inside and hoping the garden takes care of itself until the mosquitoes let up. Red Green always said we’re all in this together and keep your stick on the ice😂😂

I lost my husband Terry last December after 54 year together, and every day I go into the garden that we created together and wonder if I will ever get my mo jo back! So don't stress Danny just enjoy every moment whatever the weather, its just weather! I'd like to see a vlog where you're sat having a nice cuppa 🍵and just chillin and chatting. Duck weed comes up from the bottom of the pond and takes 24 hours to grow, if Im correct! There's not s lot you can do other than skim it off, making sure you leave it at the side of the pond for creatures to escape. Also in the Summer the pond needs shade. Blanket weed and sometimes duck weed can be removed by using a thick piece of splintered jagged bamboo cane (at one end) and twirling it in the water, comes out like a stick of candy floss. Sending love, light and Summer (?) blessings 🥕🌽🍎🌶xx ,
