'Sonic Bloom Red' weigela from Proven Winners, with its bright red tubular flowers that bloom repeatedly throughout the summer, is a wonderful addition to your garden! This beautiful shrub draws hummingbirds into your garden, is low maintenance, and can be grown in hardiness zones 4-8. Join me as I plant some of these beauties in our garden!

I live near the Great Lakes in New York zone 5 and I have a couple of the 'Sonic Bloom Red' Weigelas and about 15 azaleas and I love them. My favorite bush is hydrangea, I have 15 outside and 16 more to plant this spring.

I’m growing one in maine, and it is the perfect climate for it. It rarely gets up to even 100 degrees in the summer and it’s never been below -10 in the winter! So anyway, two years ago I put the exact same plant (it was about a gallon and a half size or so) that you have in the ground in my front yard and it just exploded! The suckers it produced that summer must of grown almost a foot and a half by the end of June, and by mid fall it had doubled in size! This past summer it doubled in size again! Here is the reasons I think it did so well: 1)nutrient rich clay soil. 2)full sun. The plant literally gets blasted with the sun ALL day. There is no nearby shade at all. And the final reason is: 3)it got treated with a lot of care because it is a specimen planting.

I planted two of these sonic red bloom weigela in March 2019. They bloomed once last year and then grew to an amazing size this spring. They have bloomed once and I hope they bloom again this year. Do I need to prune to have them rebloom? Or can I just leave them alone to rebloom? We live in Matthews, NC and I hope I can get over to see you soon. Love your videos!

Fantastic! No you don’t have to prune them to make them bloom again - they bloom on both old & new wood. We look forward to seeing you!

I'm in zone 7a, North Carolina. I planted a Sonic Bloom weigela 1 1/2 years ago. A bear broke the plant into three pieces, so I had to root 2/3rds of the plant for repair. The other 1/3 was doing fine and doubled in size. However, it only had a few blooms this spring and they didn't last long. Could this be from the damage the bear cause?

The weigela are going to look nice there. Thank you for the information on mulch around your plants. Question, if you are planting a tree out in your yard (not in a flowerbed) do you put mulch around the base? I know you're in 7b. I'm in 7a so I figured I'm pretty close. We are planting several new trees in our acre yard and I don't know how to finish it off. Thanks for helping.

We always like to cover the freshly exposed soil with a 2-3” layer of mulch. This will help retain moisture & suppress the weeds. Just make sure you don’t overcrowd the trunk, they like a little room to breathe 😉
