I bought an orange (solid orange inside and out) and a purple (solid purple inside & out), for the life of me, I can't remember the names of them, it is clear that they cross pollinated and created a rosy colored sweet potato (solid rosy inside and out).

Okra and sweet poatoes are some of the best crops. You can use okra in cover crop blends. Then go out and grab some. Okra and Sweet Poatoes can be eaten whole thing from leaves to everything.

Never boil vegetables and toss the water,, some vitamins are water soluble,, make a sauce using it,, or even cool it down and add fruit juices to make a nice drink full of vitamins 🥗🙏

@@cosmiccat3190I soak banana peels in water and feed to.garden. High potassium. Dry egg shells in oven, crush finely for calcium. If we not composting we need to reyse all our fruit and veg peel if you peel. I've only been growing about 5 years but my chard leaves are about 18" long and 12" wide. I do feed liquid fish every 2-3 weeks. I used to say 'not into gardening' Now you can't keep me out.

Kalo/taro > Cassava > sweet potatoes. Here in Hawai'i, kalo was and remains the ideal crop. Although sweet potato ('uala) was cultivated for the dry months, cassava far outperforms it in both ease of cultivation and caloric load. For people in the tropics, these three crops will cover all your starch needs. And if you have the space, get yourself at least one breadfruit ('ulu) and banana/plantain tree and you'll have more more food than you can handle (ex: one fruiting breadfruit tree produces upwards of 100-150 lbs of fruit per season)

Cube them, toss with olive oil, salt, pepper Italian seasoning, garlic powder, then air fry 360 for 15. Drizzle with a thick Vinigarette or maple syrup or nothing. Divine!

I used my old sweet potato to get some slips. I just pluck the little vine growing from the sweet potato that's been sitting around waiting to be cooked and put them in water. They grow roots pretty fast. Sometimes I just cut the part of the sweet potato with the little vine growing and plant them directly to the soil. They grow slow at first then vines overflow and crawl everywhere. 😂 They are good fried. I like to cut it 1/4 inch if you like soft and creamy sweet potato dessert or cut it thin if you like sweet potato chips. You can sprinkle sugar on top or cook the sugar with the sweet potato to make a caramel coating the sweet potato. Yum! 😊

Small technicality: Sweet potatoes are considered storage roots, not tubers, like potatoes. They are usually trouble-free (if you can keep the animals away) easy to grow, and pound for pound, probably the easiest, most useful survival food there is, with superb storage qualities.

Last year, I learned from a local farmer who purchased 5,000 slips from a supplier, that you don’t need any roots on the slips (if you have moist soil). He used Covington sweet potato slips, so I’m not sure if it’s true for all. I tried it, just stuck about 20 cuttings into the ground. They looked droopy and terrible for about 10 days, then took off and grew like crazy. Try a few slips this next season and tell us if it worked for your varieties.

yes this is true!... I have done it this way many times and I've also just trimmed the vines and immediately planted the trimming and more begins to grow... BUT.... that is not the ideal way for beginners because the soil has to literally be soaking wet the entire time and if you let it dry out even once the whole thing dies... so focusing on success for beginners I always recommend getting a nice set of roots happening before planting it and its far more forgiving that way

I'm trying a grocery store "yam" I had leftover from Thanksgiving dinner. First try at sweet potatoes. I started it under a light with a heat mat around the 1st of the year which I know now was way too early. It's in the window now (hoping to slow it down a little - didn't work) and it's insane! It's blocking out half the window! It's an ideal houseplant, it's beautiful! There's 10 or 12 slips on it like 3/8" in diameter and 20" long already. I think I'm gonna trim it back a little and try eating the greens. I'll root some slips off it in a month or so. My plan is to do the black trash bags with them around the 1st of June. I've got some stinky JLF I made last summer to fertilize them with. I think I'll also try a couple of the purple varieties when the slips become available from Baker Creek. Good tip on burying the sweet potatoes. I used to start them exposed but they would get big bites from rodents (The slips would still grow though 😂). I grow mine in sacks and trellis them so I can harvest the greens. Also growing in sacks means easier harvest. Just cut the sacks open and voila. You can also let the vines trail on the ground and put soil on top and they will root quickly. Those starts with roots are more robust than those that have no roots yet when you put them in water.

My 2 yr old grandson is very fair and has ginger hair. His favorite foods are sweet potatoes and carrots..he eats them everyday. I think its all he would eat if mama let him. He's had orange hands and feet for half of his life, but the doctor said it was ok. We also had a pet skunk whose white hair was slightly orange because she also loved sweet potatoes and carrots. Just to clarify timing, mid-February is the time to start the slip production. Two weeks before last frost date, remove slips and put in water to grow the roots out more. Is the Japanese potato your favorite tasting variety? What variety's are best for northern gardens? Where was the tubers ordered? thanks

yes that is correct timing... the white flesh Japanese are the sweetest of all but I prefer the orange flesh for the color because that adds a very important splash of orange in the diet mid winter... I got these originally from the farmers market near me... they all grow pretty much the same way

Cube your sweet potatoes with regular potatoes, extra virgin olive oil, and roasted garlic seasoning. Put on a baking pan in the oven 350 until done. Perfection!

Great video I was curious how you planted your sweet potatoes. I don’t use the jar method for slips anymore I have been using the half buried in soil but I do not put them in the light I cover the top with a big piece of brown paper or a tote lid slightly put on so they still get air circulation with of course a heat mat. This year when I started watching you I saw the method of completely covering them with dirt that worked great too. I have such a huge harvest of slips trying to find more places to plant them is my only problem.

Few people know that George Washington Carver held the sweet potato at the same level as the peanut in regard to food security. He said between the two, humans could survive and be healthy.

yes the sweet potato IMHO surpasses the peanut simply because the greens are so delicious and edible during the growing season and then the tubers store for well over a year with ease!... but I have never grown peanuts

I had a purple variety the year before last... Had to be on a waiting list... Missed the chance to buy them the year before... Finally got them and, first time ever, got enough for a pie! Best pie I ever tasted, I assure you. The next year the last potato started to sprout all on its own. And I got scared. And I shelved it so long all the sprouts died. I hope someone can relate to that! Lol. Tomorrow (before I allow myself a specialty spud card again) I am going to get a regular sweet potato from the store and practice making alips. You made it sound so easy! Thank you for your great explanation!

you will have great success this year my friend be sure to use the soil method and keep it nice and warm but don't drown them with water make sure the soil can breath
