A wander through the upper and lower gardens near end of August 2018. This year the gardens were on the small side, as many of my starts from seed succumbed to damping off disease from me using compost from the worm bin (which I wasn’t aware was carrying some of this fungus). It took out most of my starts, the ones that lived carried the disease into the lower garden bed, the plants that ‘survived’ the disease never really thrived (I should have tossed them), and even the new starts that I purchased had to fight off the damping off fungus - so it was not a great garden year. BUT I did learn more about soil born pathogens, and ‘rebooted’ the worm bin after a sterilization. Will still be careful from now on to buy or make sterile soil for planting starts.
Not sure what I can do on the garden beds at the end of this season to kill off any remaining damping off fungus, …without putting horrific chemicals in my soil. Open to any suggestions you may have.
On the good side, the ‘Back-to-Eden’ garden method used in the upper garden has been Fastastic in a number of regards: (1) keeps weeds at bay making the garden much easier and aesthetic; (2) soil is kept more moist; (3) easier to water - no worries about washing soil away; (4) less rot as plant fruits and leaves sit on the bark, and not in mud/dirt underneath; (5) plants appear to be doing very well.
We’ll have to see what next year brings in terms of the garden. The main purpose of my current gardens is for me to learn how to garden, and to get the soil in condition. In hard times, then I would figure on maximizing garden use and productivity - right now there are other projects, as well as my day-job, which require my attention.
