Italy has tortoises? Why yes, yes Italy has some very endangered tortoises, actually. The same ones also live in parts of France and Spain and while many of you have come to know them simply as Hermann’s tortoises, the ones found in these countries are the rare, endangered western subspecies. Testudo hermanni hermanni, the western Hermann’s tortoise, is one of planet earth’s many, wonderful chelonians. These remarkable, shelled creatures are marked with gorgeous, vibrant colors and interesting behaviors. Their appearance, along with a small size make them highly coveted. Illegal poaching along with other factors threaten their very existence with some populations being at risk of extinction in today’s world. Western Hermann’s tortoises have been a huge part of Garden State Tortoise over the years and we’ve become known for our work with them. It’s our pleasure to bring you a closer look into their beauty, natural history and what’s being done to save them.
