I bake eggshells, powder them fine, reduce them vinegar and dilute the liquid 1: 20 and water my tomatoes. Yet, Blossom End Rot, even as it manifests as a calcium deficiency, its rarely so. Its more an inconsistent watering problem. When water is less, the calcium uptake decreases and the plant gives preference to leaves rather than fruit. One may find BER on fruits higher up on the stem and none on the lower fruits. That's the watering problem. To overcome this, deep water the plant, keeping it in shade, strip-off all the lower and older leaves; add some calcium water too and once fresh leaves sprout , move the container into sunlight. And water consistently and regularly.

Thanks for sharing. At what temperature to bake? After adding vinegar the eggshel mix should be liquid ?
@A7T043 Жыл бұрын
@@SA-nk8sc I bake them at full volume till the eggshells start turning creamish in colour. Crush them up a bit with a spoon before baking; it'll smell bad if there's that egg membrane still stuck to the shells. After mixing eggshells to vinegar (or vice versa), a lot of the eggshells will dissolve into the vinegar. Thats the fluid you'll use, suitably diluted. You could strain off the extra eggshell powder. Hope this helps.

This is the best video I have found so far explaining calcium and why some sources of calcium don't work well for plants with severe calcium deficiency.
@790robothead64 жыл бұрын
My mom tried eggshell water this year. A lot of it. The results were night and day. Everything is big, green and lush. She lives in the middle of town where the soil is pretty much spent of a lot of nutrients. Her compost bin is pretty small in comparison to the garden size. Last year there was a real problem with blossom end rot and blight. We took a look at the different plants and figured it was calcium deficiency. It's just past mid season and everything looks incredible. It's amazing how doing one small thing can have such a huge impact.

Great advice, I was desperate one year and used tums for foliar spray. One tomato had end rot, the others grew normally. I used many of your own advice on other things and they all work well.

My parents always added oyster shells bought from the feed store. It too took many years to decompose, but if you add it every year especially for our heavy clay soy it was a good long term solution. They used to be very cheap, last time I got them though it was pretty expensive.
@julesclarke61402 жыл бұрын
You can add vinegar and you shells in a jar, place a cloth on top, leave it for 5-10 days, filter the liquid and you'd have the calcium (calcium acetate I believel immediately available for your plants

Have you tried crushed limestone or oyster shells? I have a machine I got from Bottle Crusher LLC that is used for crushing glass bottles into usable sand. It can also crush limestone and oyster shells. I added crushed oyster shells to the glass sand to use as mulch. It kept the plant's roots cooler and moist while the surface remained dry. No weeds or bugs. I planted a rose bush and 4 flowers using this mixture. The bush and flowers grew like I gave them steroids. I am now experimenting with glass sand, cow manure, limestone to see how they grow. I recently got 4 orchards and I'm going to use limestone cullet as a soil.

Roast or bake egg shells in a pan oven or bbq then put in coffee grinder. Mix 1 cup shells with 1 cup vinegar in a jar and let sit for a week or 2. Mix 1 tablespoon to 2 gallons of water, can also add 1 tablespoon of Epsom salt to every gallon for cheap cal/mag.
