If we can make scramjet work, then why not try to build long-distance transport, like hypersonic Concorde? Rapid intercontinental travel is a far bigger market than space launches. Everyone would like to travel around the world much faster - there'll always be a large market for that. Not many people want to go to space.

First, we need powerful liquid engines with high specific impulse and thrust to weight ratio. Can't dream too big if the core part itself is lacking. SpaceX's Merlin, Raptor-1 and Raptor-2 (to be used in starship) is the reason behind their success with reusability. I urge you to make a comparison between various liquid engines whether it be Soviet, Chinese, Indian or American

How are SpaceX engines so light
@JohnSmith-vn8dm
@JohnSmith-vn8dm Жыл бұрын
@@santhoshsridhar5887 Because they took a basic design and iteratively optimized it for that over multiple generations. The Marlin engine isn't a cutting edge design, doesn't have great Isp or but they only use that single engine and focused on that on the Falcon 9. ISRO's SCE-200 is a much more advanced design like SpaceX's Raptor engine.
@santhoshsridhar5887
@santhoshsridhar5887 Жыл бұрын
@@JohnSmith-vn8dm @John Smith Well, both Merlin and Raptor have a much higher thrust to weight ratio and the raptor also has slightly higher thrust in comparison to SCE-200. It weights 2000kg in comparison to SCE-200's 2600-2700kg. Not to mention the near double chamber pressure. Plus, the Raptor 2 is completely different compared to Merlin. Merlin 1 is an old gas generator cycle engine which is a pretty old design but I guess manufactured with such materials that makes it very light. Raptor 2 is a newly designed full flow staged combustion cycle that no one else has attempted(besides Russia developing some RD engine in the 60s). While I do agree that they've learnt a lot from Merlin, Raptor engines are more than a product of iterative design.
@JohnSmith-vn8dm
@JohnSmith-vn8dm Жыл бұрын
@@santhoshsridhar5887 Yes Raptor is a brand new cutting edge design. There are very few full flow engines out there. Even the best Russian ones were usually fuel rich staged designs. But my point was the Merlin engines outside thrust/weight aren't that advanced. The reason SpaceX was successful wasn't because of their engine technology, it was because of their system design. That's why I think ADMIRE is ISRO's most important project.

If ISRO wants to be in the business of space launch, it must preserve lowest cost of payload to orbit or SpaceX will eat its lunch. To do this, it must reuse as big a piece as possible and throw away the least and most problematic pieces to retrieve. The last boost provider is the most difficult to retrieve because of control and heat ablation issues on re-entry and the initial launch accelerators are the largest cost. Therefore, something like the multi-engine reusable accelerator you have illustrated seems like the most cost effective solution. As a bonus, it provides data on RAM and SCRAM jet domains that are strategically important.

My thought: 1) NGLV will eventually happen because- i) HLV is need for sustained Human Spaceflight (new space policy draft emphasized sustained crewed LEO presence) and planetary exploration (Lunar sample return and Mars landing, for example, are very likely to happen next decade- a lot of hints from scientists in recent times). ii) HLV is natural progression after LVM3. ISRO is doing a lot feasibility studies for HLV for many years. iii) Reusability and hence VTVL is inevitable (for India's level of demand in future). iv) Both TV and ADMIRE are active programs. It is the evidence that there is an active VTVL program. 2) RLV is here to stay as strategic vehicle. GSLV (Mk2) is probably only for test because GSLV will be retired soon. RLV (ORV) based TSTO may be launched on top of LVM-3 core in medium term (my wild guess as Mk3 is ISRO's foreseeable future's workhorse) and also on top a reusable VTVL booster in longer term. Being strategic vehicle, MoD will be involved (and may even be a customer) so there will be money. If defense guys think it's something effective, its not gonna die easily (especially when China has one). 3) HAVA-based TSTO seems to be the least priority among the three. It will happen but slowly. It's the coolest but hardest. Somanath sir said it's "far future technology".

But NGLV is being touted for realization through private sector consortium, which itself would be quite revolutionary change for how India does spaceflight. That radical departure is itself very challenging, and I'm worried even about just being able to do that part. Achieving NGLV will involve multiple revolutions, to be sure, which is what makes me apprehensive, given India's past track record.

the most crucial part of these programs is how long we are anticipating it become a real thing, probably not less than a decade or so(very optimistic timeline) and as far as keeping up with other agencies is concerned it is going to get worse. I am not being pessimistic or skeptical about ISRO's competency but this is how things have been in the past and appears not to improve anytime soon.

the space shuttle was mostly successful and did what it was supposed for.. just that it was not as rapidly reusable!! The funda that went behind making it was way different. also it'll be stupid to think it will have payload bays like the shuttle orbiter. If you consider it like a upper stage with wings, spacex challenger can be imagined. RLV would have most of its volume as fuel as an upper stage and payload in the absolute front like the starship. You can even see it as a smaller version of starship rocket!!

When the US started the space shuttle program, they claimed it to be a cheap, reusable and reliable way of space travel. The Space Transport System (STS), as we now know, was far from the claim of absurd launch rates, due to much longer turn around times. The black heat resistant tiles have to be checked individually. The aerodynamics of the space shuttle was also purposely designed to be bad, to create more drag during re-entry. People used to call it "the flying brick". The complex shape of the space shuttle was a real problem for aerodynamics during launch. Further to reduce weight, they cut the corner in certain areas where double thermal insulation should have been used. The burning example is of the Columbia's last flight. To make a space shuttle like design completely foolproof, the cost and dry weight will be so large that it will not be worth it. Russians also dropped their space plane program a long time ago. NASA is switching to the new SLS program. I strongly believe that the ISRO space plane design should be dropped.

No matter what I can see us private companies are way ahead in this kind of reusable LVs, sierra space's dreamchaser will be able to do it by launching on top of flacon 9 and starship kinda like the 3rd project you told us about (just kinda).
