Gareth Southgate on his future as England manager and Euro 2024 final against Spain

Gareth Southgate has said it is 'emotionally impossible to make a logical decision' on whether to stay on as England manager at the moment - even if he wins the European Championship.
In an interview with Sky's Rob Harris, ahead of Sunday's final with Spain in Berlin, Southgate insisted he had "improved the credibility" of English football - having felt hurt by criticism earlier in the tournament due to the team's sluggish progress.

Despite the nation's love for football, England's men's team have only made it to the final stage of any major European tournament twice in the entire history of its participation. This has happened in 2020 and 2024 thanks to Southgate.

I was 2 still dont remember. I have watched since I was able to remember lol. England have had many teams that could have and should have won. They didnt have the spirit or the mentality. They had the skill. 1986 started poorly, then they came alive. The maradoona wondergoal was scored because our players never recovered from that cheat they lost their focus otherwise that goal would not have happened as good as he was, should have beaten Argentina. Maradonna hand of god be we had had huge portions of that match. Germany 1990 should have won that one also, the final was abysmal we were the best team at that competition. If we can get the arrogance/confidence of some of these past winners. If we had always had the mentality of Germany we would have won so much more

@@hydrafuryour players don’t have much tenacity like other nationalities. Mentality is the key. But our players are also technically poor. So tenacity and skill is the main thing. Southgate fixed that.

Gareth Southgate is the most successful coach England ever had. 2x final at Euro 2020 and Euro 2024. Semi final at WC. Easily qualified from the groups. The 1966 FIFA World Cup featured only 16 teams and all of them were from Europe and South America while none from Africa, Asia and elsewhere from the rest of the world. Africa and Asia started Participating at WC since 1978 with only one team each. Southgate has been computing with the world playing true and justified football in front of the world. That makes him the best Coach ever.

As far as some "pundits" are concerned, England can lose 0-5 to Spain on Sunday and these media people or ex-players will still praise Southgate as the best manager England has ever had simply because he took England to 2 consecutive Euro Finals. Southgate is already a god and can do no wrong in these people's (the FA included) eyes. Remaining trophy-less is not going to diminish his deity status. These pundits and ex-players are going to call for knighthood for him regardless of Sunday's performance and result. On the other hand, for supporters who want nothing less than an England trophy, keeping Southgate beyond this Euro will be an absolute disaster.
