Hey thanks for tuning in again! On this street photography adventure I'm in Amsterdam where i attempt my first ever night time street photography shoot and visit the amazing city looking for nice light and tones to capture some street photography images with my Fujifilm XT3 and XF23mm 1.4 lens.
Im thrilled with the response I've had to my previous street photography videos and since recent starting these photography vlogs I've had a few questions about dealing with confidence and confrontation when out shooting the streets. So this video is dedicated to how i approach my street photography challenges and what methods i use to avoid confrontation and keep enjoying my day!
I hope you enjoy the video! Thanks SOOOO much for all the support you have given me by watching my photography vlogs! I'm truly grateful!
Any questions don't hesitate to get in touch!
Gareth :-) x

I work in Amsterdam. you can always ask a Dutchman/woman for help and they will help you but be aware of pickpockets. its the same type as you have in the UK. keep your eye on your gear. Photography in Amsterdam is normal. the best dutch photography schools are in Amsterdam and there are crazy amounts of tourists. just dont be sneaky explain when you are asked and its okay. good tip would be to give them your business card, write down the image file number on the card and ask them to mail you so you can send them a processed file for them to print. both parties are happy. just stay away from the moped maffia.

Love your videos Gareth, they really inspire me to get out and capture better images and just generally practice a lot more. I’m also pleased to see you moved back to the Fuji X series! One thing that would be great for a future video would be showing how you set up your camera for street. Do you use zone focusing, do you change your photometry settings, what about back button focusing to name but a few. Even a video going through your menu and discussing different scenarios would be really helpful for an amateur like myself. Anyway, keep up the great content mate, looking forward to your next videos.

I really enjoyed this video. KZbin recommended it and I'm glad I checked it out. I just got my first camera a week ago (a Fuji X-T1) and tried my hand at some night time street photography the other night. I came home with a couple of decent pictures so I was happy as I don't have any real idea how to use the camera yet. As for your photos in this video my favorites are: 2 (in color), 4, 9, 11, and 14. And if I had to choose between these, I'd go with 4 as my favorite.

Street photography is becoming more and more alluring Gareth and had some very fine examples recently of vloggers on you tube finding and showing it off on here. I really loved the video and I really found it hard to find and pick one image, but for me it was number 5. Loved the contrasting black and white, superb mate, thanks for sharing.

Enjoyable vid yet again Ben! Why do you choose the prime and not something like your 16-50? My favorite was the guy in the museum on the phone with my second being either 5 or 6... the one with the guy pulling the luggage. I thought the opening directly behind you during your last bit of inane ramblings would make an excellent minimalistic silhouette! Also, during that bit when you looked outside into the rain had some real possibilities as well I would think. What sort of looks and reactions do you get for walking along talking to yourself and looking into your camera? Must get some odd looks for that eh? LOL!!

Great vlog Gareth, loved 7 and 8, image 7 told the best story and showed what Amsterdam is about with it being a bike city perfect sunrise , number 8 was great for the added reflection to the image. I think with street photography honesty is best policy but you need to take image first or you miss the perfect moment , sometimes is best to explain first after showing them where they can see image ie Instagram or youtube if your polite they more receptive to it. Great vlog though really enjoyed this one and explaining all about what your capturing , your definately drawing me into street photography looks an epic art to it .

Thanks for the Vid Gareth. Going to try some street photography at some point if just to get out of my comfort zone which is woodland and seascapes. Images I liked most? The photo of the girl in the museum watching the film. Nice minimalism there. Also, one of the man riding the bike and he's looking directly at you. Street photography but with a "connection" that eye contact brings into an image. Cheers.

Really enjoyed your film the photo's and points made so big thanks. Fav pic, can I have a composite haha. Hey Gareth another nice vid, I really like pictures 4,7,13. I think its great to see your thought process and its very different at night trying to spot objects or people that are lit in a scene, for example the bike in the alleyway and person just hitting the light. I am amazed by the depth of field you are getting at low f stops, I guess it was a wide angle lens? One technical question do you use back button focussing for street or do you find it easier linked to the shutter button?
@GarethDanks
@GarethDanks 5 жыл бұрын
hey David thanks so much for watching mate!! really glad you enjoyed! glad you liked them pics! yeah only back focus for anything.. never use the shutter.. with street its important to pre focus and then just compose and wait. as for the dof yeah its a perk of using crop sensor.. you get more dof.. so 1.8 is closer to 2.8 on full frame, the bike wont be sharp but sharp enough.. tho i wish id used 2.8 and under exposed more.. came out fine tho :-)

Great shots and *really* like the fact showed the histograms, very helpful! Stoicism philosophy can be very helpful with a strategy in dealing with difficult people. You can't control how others behave but you can control how you react.

Nice work again. I love doing night time street photography. Colors really pop at night. For example in your pictures number seven and eight you can definitely see a lot of popping colors from the sunrise. If I can make a suggestion it would be easier to vote on a favorite picture if you also put them all at the end of the video one after the other or else it makes it a bit difficult to have to scroll back and forth. I like them all and some really stood out but again they would require me going back and forth into the video non-stop to relook at all the pictures so I will just say that I enjoyed them all. What I would like to also suggest is to do a video on how you edit your street photography pictures to have such powerful highlights and shadows. I mean I already know because I edit a lot but I want to see your workflow and approach. That would be really beneficial because ultimately in the world of digital photography, I find that the edit is just as important as the picture and your edits are very abstract and it would be very good to see how you edit your pictures. @my_city_lense

Love our work. It’s inspiring as I also try street photography when I’m in the proper mood. Thank you for your tip as I struggle sometimes to get the shot I want being afraid of the people reaction. I’ll dare more in the future. Small technical question for night street photography: since the lack of light is mostly the problem, do you recommend working in speed priority with a chosen aperture and leave you isa in auto. BTW I’m also using Fuji, with both the XT3 and XT20 depending on how light I want to travel.

Hey Eric mate. Thanks for the comment. Really glad you enjoyed the vid. Yes 100% manual at night mate. The camera will see dark areas as underexposed so will try to brighten. Unless you use the comp dial to minus 1-2. Easier to shoot manually and watch the histogram mate. Good habit to have. Act as if your looking past people at their surroundings and be confident! You’ll do great 😊👍🏻

Your photos are amazing and I love watching them. I am learning A lot from you. I have A request, it would be very intresting if you made a video of how you process your photos. Like, do shot in raw, how much do you edit your photos and how do you store yours. I now it is a lot to ask but it would be great. Sorry for asking.. Best regards Per from Sweden

A busker on the docks in Liverpool, confronted me and said my lens on the camera was intimidating her, so I asked he if it would be ok with a smaller lens. She said yes, so whipped the 24-105 off and put a 50mm on and she was happy, what was all that about lol

hey Gareth, first of all great pictures all of them. infact today i shot a roll of Ilford HP5 on pentax k1000. this is my first full roll in a day and second time shooting street, and i did thought about a lot of what you said.! i have a question about IMAGE 4. how come when you focused on the corner for getting the silhouette @ f 1.8 , the bike on the front left of the frame was in focus ? is the DoF so huge on 1.8 ? kindly guide. Thanks . i subscribed . !

Hey there thanks for watching and the comment. Glad you enjoyed the vid. Yeah right right the bikes not sharp. Might look it in the pic but it’s not. Perhaps I should have focus stacked it but I tend to keep it as is. Good thing about crop sensor cameras ay 😊👍🏻

Incredible shots! You have a knack for extracting beauty out of some pretty mundane scenes many of us would pass right by. And zone focusing at f 1.8 in low light seems bold. I doubt I’ve got the range perception to handle it. Very helpful video!

That brightened up my Sunday morning, well done. I have been asked to delete a photo on a couple of occasions. However, I always have Slot 1 for RAW and Slot 2 for JPEG, and if I want to keep the pic, and keep the peace, I show them the deleting of the pic 'from slot 2 only' (remember to switch off consecutive deletions) and they are happy!!!!

No truth is ever a lie! Like I say you have immense enthusiasm and you are very clear in your approach which is very inspiring. Fan Ho I know little about but his images that I have seen are unforgettable and that’s why with the approach you took to get that shot, the patience to get the needed elements, soon as the guy became placed in the scene and you took the photo - absolutely brilliant. I’m a fairly new subscriber but have to say already a huge fan of your work and slowly making my way through all your uploads but particularly like the street photography which is how I found you in the first place. I interacted with this as you requested in the video and the fact you have taken the time to respond is good to see which is another thing I like about you when you are out and about you take the time to involve yourself with your surroundings and the people which shows that with the right attitude you can get that said photo just by talking to people, involving them and as you say you then go on to have a happy day photographing! Top man keep it up 👌🏻📷😊
