This pinned comment will be updated live if/when the NASB 2 devs fix their videogame. EDIT 12/24/23: Update 1.4 dropped with more bugfixes and, finally, Team Attack! (Seriously, why did we not have Team Attack before...?) But the devs seem to be making good progress over the past couple updates, even if they do introduce some pretty big bugs sometimes. nickelodeonallstarbrawl.com/update-1-4-preview-team-attack-share-stocks-and-fixes/ EDIT 12/1/23: Guys... they accidentally removed Donatello's ability to drop from ledge. On the right side of the stage. What is this game. twitter.com/WDBTHtGP/status/1730731152321675334 EDIT 12/1/23: We can finally reset training mode! They also added save states and DI options, still not totally there but this is a major step up for training mode. Overall the 1.3 patch has been very nice. EDIT 11/30/23: Update 1.3 releases tomorrow with 81 PAGES OF PATCH NOTES. Here's a link! nickelodeonallstarbrawl.com/update-1-3-patch-notes/ EDIT 11/26/23: They've announced Update 1.3, which contains some promising changes. It claims to fix a couple of the more... hilarious bugs I talked about here ('get demoted to Bronze by accident by being AFK' and 'getting frozen in place when someone trades with your grab') And they're also adding a couple important control settings like C-stick strong/light attacks, as well as finally letting keyboard users exist. DI will also be added to training mode, still very barebones but it's a nice start. Overall I am very impressed by these patch notes, and I agree with pretty much every change. Though, even with this patch, the game will have a long way to go to escape the feeling of being super early access. The patch isn't out yet, but if it actually pans out like how it reads, it'll be a big improvement for Garfield Game. This is like 1/10 of my overall problems with it but they're addressing them well. Link: nickelodeonallstarbrawl.com/update-1-3-preview-new-features-gameplay-feel-and-balance-updates/

I animated the Garfield game! Not garfield exactly but Lucy Loud and the Captain Falcon succesor: Grandma Gertie. And I'm having such a blast seeing so many comments pointing out her air kick that's straight out from Smash. I didn't expect it to be such a big deal. Gotta say I loved animating almost every attack move on gertie, such as the smears on Lucy, though her head is way too big and it's the only thing that's always visible.

3:37 While a lot of people know Rivals of Aether for the workshop it is absolutely great as a standalone game and worth buying even if you don't touch WS. The base cast is unique & has synergistic movesets, the game is full of mobility options that allow for an expressive movement based neutral, the offstage game has a lot of depth, and the combo game & offense are extremely dynamic due to mechanics such as drift DI & hitfalling opening up options for both players. I really recommend you give it an honest shot outside of 'funny workshop game'
@WhyDo11 ай бұрын
I agree with all your points there, but I wasn't talking about the quality of the competitive game in that part, but rather the challenge of pulling in a wide casual audience like Smash does. That's something that Workshop did amazingly well compared to the base game: If you search it, workshop content has drawn millions of views and no doubt a lot of players to a game they normally wouldn't be interested in. The game itself is great, I've competed in tournaments for it before and even hosted my own!

As someone who has thoughts on "The Lines tm" The best ways to iterate on it would be A): have something vaugely like ---+- with the + representing where the opponent would be able to move again. B) an option to make a cone with a shaded area instead of a line, as a way to show the possible space you could DI to. Could also work with the + idea, but just use a solid line there instead. I think its a useful feature if it was improved, since unlike most fighters, theres a considerably larger amounts of directions people can be moved. Heck I would even like something like this in some anime fighters where your opponent can tech out of a combo, just use the + part of the line to show where they can start teching.
@WhyDo11 ай бұрын
Yeah these are great places to start. Like if they really were "DI lines" in Smash/NASB 2 that'd be sick, right?! But then they made the lines literally just tell you a move's angle and knockback. It frustrates me because I feel like the hard part - displaying the fancy lines onscreen - is already done. It's just a matter of what information is important to competitive players. Something like displaying the length of hitstun, showing a DI cone, etc... that would be infinitely more useful than the kinds of lines we're getting right now.

Funny you mentioned the bug where one person wins, but the results screen showed someone else. I only played the first game but I saved a recording of when this happened. It turns out that when you die, the game doesn't reduce your lives on the same frame as when it resets your % to 0. So there is a possibility that if someone were to die within the last couple frames of the match that the game confuses who actually won.
@NichoMania211 ай бұрын
I already got burned on early buying the first game, so I still feel hesitant to buy this one.. To me, and this probably doesn't go for everyone [especially the online fighting community], but I feel like a ton of these Smash-like games all concentrate on balancing for compeititve that they don't add the things that make these games fun to play singleplayer, or just by itself as a game. One of the main things I don't see enough of is actual substantial UNLOCKS. When I played the first game and found out all I get is some dev art at the end of every allstar-run, I dropped it immediately... 64/Melee/Brawl felt like such a specific type of fun with that, where you'd suddenly get a random silhouette that's come to fight you, and unless you could make out who it was, you wouldn't know till the fight starts..and though nowadays, Nintendo has made advertising their new characters the main appeal [sadly...], I remember back when the new characters were genuinely something to discover, and be shocked by when you find them. Same with new stages too! or modes! If some of these new games actually go into making these kinds of things, even having a similar museum-esque collection mode, trophies/stickers/whatever, that'd already put it well above all the other smash-likes. All in all, maybe this sounds like waffling on and on about nostalgia, but I genuinely think, even Smash itself, has lost that childlike appeal of being shocked by the characters in the game. And the stages too. It's such a specific feeling that just doesn't seem to show up anymore..I hope some of these 'indie' games learn to bring it back at some point.
@WhyDo11 ай бұрын
Whoa, thanks taking the time to write this. I didn't even think of the 'unlocks' perspective before at all - since that's not something I see myself as caring about in games. But considering it, I totally get how that's a massive strength of Smash Bros. that other platform fighters seriously tend to struggle with. (And maybe I care about unlocks more than I think, since losing trophies in Smash legit did make me sad.) Not to mention... recently, when I played Street Fighter 6, it was actually really fun slowly maxing out a character's "friendship" in the campaign, getting to learn more about them, finally culminating in a sick new costume to use for that character in multiplayer. So I'm pretty surprised I never considered this angle. Maybe my imagination has been dulled by the fact that I haven't played a whole lot of games with 'good' unlocks like that at all recently. Weirdly enough Call of Duty is the closest thing I can think of (though that series takes it TOO far by leaning into microtransactions & prioritizing grindy 'engagement' over fun.) Unlocking a new gun, perk, scorestreak, etc. gives you a great feeling of "hey, what does this do?" and I think that's part of why the games are so successful. In any case I'll definitely be considering this as I write reviews going forward, thanks for the comment! Curious to see if Rivals 2 has anything interesting planned here, since they do seem to care a lot about the world they're creating. And a random recommendation - have you played Outer Wilds by any chance? It's not quite 'unlocks', but that game is totally based around that feeling of wonder and discovery you're talking about. It's a really unique gem to go into blind.
@blok--head747210 ай бұрын
It's almost as if devs seem to forget what exactly made those Smash games special in the first place. You can try and imitate it, maybe copy over the mechanics and what not, but what really made Smash special was the amount of offline content and unlockables that made it worth playing. Without that, NTAB is pretty much only catering to the "MLG" crowd, who are not the majority of casual players who expect some actual content for the game's asking price. (Not everyone is trying to make it to EVO, some of us just want *FUN SHIT TO DO* on the side.) Just my two cents, to add onto your point.

I remember playing SM4SH 3DS for the first time, having been there throughout the entire hype cycle, and naturally being very excited to finally play the full game instead of the demo. But I was also a bit disappointed that my most wanted character, Bowser Jr., hadn't made it into the game. I'd seen a KZbin thumbnail about the leaks, but immediately brushed it off as nonsense. So you can imagine my surprise when one day, after playing Classic Mode as Bowser, I saw the Challenger Approaching screen with a silhouette I didn't quite recognize. And when the match started, lo and behold, I was fighting Bowser Jr. All I can remember is being so excited that I wanted to defeat him as quickly as possible, so I didn't get spoiled on too much of his moveset.

Nasb 1 did not patch in Garfield. It patched in Gorfeld: Garfield's unnerving, perpetually wide-eyed clone. I like Garfield, not so much Gorfeld. Though I suppose I could've given him a mention. Jokes aside, the first game's patch cycle did make good progress, which is why I mentioned having faith in the devs. But no amount of band-aid fixes could fix the deep fundamental issues with that game. They couldn't patch in better animations, or the ability to walk... and the voices we got were comically repetitive. (I can only hear Spongebob say "hi-yah" so many times in succession before losing my mind.) Too little, too late - especially considering just how awful that first impression was.

I think NASB2 is easily one of the best and most fun platform fighters ever made. It needed more time in the oven 100% no doubt, but when the game finally gets the polish it deserves, I can see it rivaling smash. Obviously nothing will beat smash because of its iconic roster, but NASB2 has definitely raised the bar and innovated in terms of gameplay and online performance. I can't help but to think of Multiversus as well, as it has also innovated the genre in its own way with its focus on teams. Hopefully platform fighters can thrive together and learn from one another. (Also Hello people who may read this in the future post relaunch of MVS, How is the game?)

The only issues I have with the game are the price, there really should be a discount for people who bought NASB1, Stocks can last way too long. I think the way to fix this is have higher knockback at higher percents or something that doesn't ruin low percent combo game. I am also not a fan of being forced to use tilt stick. Once I swapped to melee as my main smash game I quit using tilt stick so I would prefer to use smash stick. I wish we could turn off the "super slime move" or whatever you want to call it. I dont mind the slime mechanic itself but not using the move when its charged just feels lame so I wish we could have it off in tournament. The last one is the glitchyness isn't exactly the good type like we have in melee. Although there are some fun glitches. I discovered one with jimmy's air blast thing against recoveries that will literally cause the opponent to kill thyself off the top, at least it kills donatello off the top. Literally just hit the opponent from onstage to offstage and when they up b they will just leave the blast zone. But all in all I do think this game has a lot of potential and this might be the game that actually ends smash. It seems like both melee and ult players are really enjoying it. I mean smash will always be there melee is not dying, but with nintendo actively trying to kill the scene (and steve plaguing ultimate) and now we have a platform fighter that is the best of both melee, ultimate, and traditional fighters WITH DEV SUPPORT, I could see this actually becoming as big as smash competitively.

I will never forget when the first game out and Multiversus came out around the same time, and I was saying how the first Nick game had a decent skeleton with potential to improve and at least it wasn't season pass, 20$ for a skin garbage like MVS. This guy in the discord server I was saying this in in got mad and I mean really livid, saying how I was a fucking idiot and that they would totally do the battle pass stuff if the production value was higher. Yeah well look who's the idiot now 😂 (Me, because he probably doesn't remember shit) EDIT: I just got to the end of the video and saw the 45$ DLC shit. It's me, I am the idiot.
@ShimmerScarlet11 ай бұрын
To be fair, I'd rather pay $20 for every character to get a costume, and $20 for DLC characters to increase longevity, than grind the hell out of a terrible battle pass just for 4 costumes that are gone forever after a month or two, and maybe 1 character, 2 if you're lucky. Multiversus destroyed itself with that freemium battle pass nonsense.

This game has many decent ideas, but drops the ball at 90% of them. "We introduced Meter's into a Platform fighter, but we will not tell you what they do". "We bring in new Super moves for some of your fan favourite characters of all time, but make them the most barebones they could be". There are many examples where we were SO close to greatness, but they just missed the spot. I genuinly think they should have left the game in the oven for 1 more year, make the paid skins either free or unlockable, do a few Beta Test's to see if all was working well, a tutorial that teaches you more than jump and punch, and finally, fix the Super moves. Since why are these the most disappointing aspect of an otherwise ok game, like outside of a few meme ones Rin and Stimpy are the only ones that are good. The game needed another year, and it sucks it did not get it, but I HOPE they will make future skins free since 20$ for a few skins you might like SUCKS

Sadly the rushed state was most likely due to the publisher, as according to the comments they are notorious for giving ridiculous deadlines, causing every game under their belt to be a rushed mess. The developers clearly show care for the game though, and now they have a better headstart compared to NASB 1, with so much untapped potential. If they play their cards right they can polish out the game with patches/dlc and make it a finished masterpiece.
@Taraku4311 ай бұрын

Great video. The amount of options you have with slime and that one developer's twitter thread about heavies really shows this game's potential, even giving credibility to the seemingly wild claim that it's better than Smash. I really hope they sort out all the bugs and controller issues.
@ProwerVolt2 ай бұрын
A lot of the controller issues have been fixed (imo) but the bugs do still exist. I feel they went in over their head once again here. NASB1 was mostly glitchless, but it was a broken mess with 3 characters that are good and everyone else can't even compare NASB2 is heavily balanced but MAN are there bugs. It's like we get either one or the other, broken characters, or broken gameplay. I hope if there's a NASB3 (which it's looking incredibly unlikely due to the firings they've been doing) we can at least find like.. a middle ground??? If not an actually objectively amazing game with little issues

4:19 In defense of the Flying Dutchman theme from All☆Star 1: it's very reminiscent of the soundtracks and music from older Spongebob media, like Revenge of the Flying Dutchman on the GBA. That game was a precious part of growing up for me, and hearing the Ducthman stage theme in Funny Spongebob Fighter 1 feels very nostalgic and fulfilling in a Nickelodeon crossover fighter. I definitely hear where you're coming from in the comparison, but I'm really glad that the first theme exists. It evokes strong feelings of classic Spongebob. Edit: Spelling mistakes

Slime sounds like the sort of thing I've wanted from Smash for a while now. People who talk about meter in smash I often find only really talk about super moves, but that's such a small part of what meter can do and not the most interesting stuff. Having a lot of different ways to spend your meter allows for a lot of expressiveness and interesting decision making. Specific tuning and implementation aside I've always really liked the concept behind Cloud's limit from the opponent's perspective for example. You can force Cloud to spend meter to recover when he otherwise would have wanted to use that meter in a different way. This is a nice dynamic that I've wanted to see explored more through something like EX specials, which Slime does.
