I think another reason is what I’d call The Skinwalker Effect. Naturally an AI Nextbot or NPC isn’t going to generate its own noises on the fly and has to rely on sound files. But there’s something about the perfect repetition of the noise with no pitch or speed variation that also makes it scary, because it seems unnatural to us, like how Skinwalkers perfectly imitate noises and repeat them, but never changing pitch, speed or anything.

Or you want to run but you cant. Yeah exactly that feeling. Then second thing, everything is real, nothing seems off. You sleeping room just looks like how it was before falling asleep. So when i was in my sp my room looked like always but my door was open which was odd. See my bed was facing my door , and behind that door is a long hallway. Then i see a doctor or something like that , 2 meters tall, dark eyes. He walks towards me, bends over and just looks into my face which i cant move, so close to me that his tip of the nose is touching mine. But at that point i was in full counciousness, being able to have toughts like i do have right now. So after an unplesent 5 seconds. I was like "hey this isnt real, and i wasnt scared anymore. Right after that i woke up. "Woke up" Because it felt like i was never asleep. My room looked identical, my sleeping position. The brightness of my room. How did my "sleeping brain" know how my room looked at night? Even my door was open, which to this day. Is very unsetteling. It was 5 years ago. When i was 15. @@Minecraaft93I think that’s because you’re not actually asleep anymore, you’re awake but your brain is still seeing things due to those weird dream chemicals still being in your head, hence why your room looked the same, because you were actually seeing it… My first SP experience was waking up paralysed to see my gf getting ready for work and to the left of her was a tall black figure with a hat just standing there, which she obviously didn’t see, she also hadn’t notice me awake but paralysed despite my best efforts to talk. And yeah after like 5-10 seconds. You do get pretty calm since you realize that its not real. But i really want to know where our brain gets the information to "build" these dark creatures. Is it from the movies we watched etc.. anyway. Like if you are not asleep while a sp are you then also able to feel pain? So many questions.. And also the fact that they shove their face into ours. Like do they want to kiss or something?

Horror games could learn from this, especially in sections where you have to run from a monster. Usually it's just some combination of run to a certain point to win, or find a set location to hide in, and then run some more. @@yourehereforthatarentyou That gives me an idea for a sort of nextbot map. The nextbot, like the guy above said, makes a loud noise when chasing you, and is otherwise slightly quiet, to the point where running around drowns it out. Avoiding the nextbot is one of the only strategies, as the map could be tight corridors with doors every now and then. However, here's where the evil comes into play. There are small radios scattered around the map. They spawn randomly, and if close to them for too long, they emit a loud noise akin to the nextbots. This is mostly to startle you, and run into the actual nextbot, but also notifies the nextbot of where you are. Reminds me a lot of the monsters in Ao Oni, where they use similar behaviors: -After the first encounter the game gives you breathing room by teleporting the monster away if you evade it for several rooms. -After you had calmed down for a bit, the game hits you with a random (or scripted) chase so now you have to rely on your memory or map design for a good hiding spot or way to juke the monster. In doing so, you are always left with a feeling of dread whenever you are not being chased because the monster will eventually come back at almost any point but it also gives you time to explore the game with relative peace. Now that I think about it, Left 4 Dead uses a very similar idea with how it coordinates zombies against players with the cycle of action and calmness.

I love the eery message I get when I spot a nextbot in a place it's never been, saying "This nextbot needs time to learn the map. This could take a few minutes or a few hours." Back then, my adolescent mind was absolutely bewildered at how smart they were. Not only was it good at tracking me down, but when I was slightly out of range for it to chase me, it would actually hide behind a wall or around a corner. The only things in your favor are it's momentum/slowed acceleration, and large pits that don't have any hills to leave them

Bro, the only thing worse would be having that sound play when it sees you, but you don't see it first. Or if it just makes that sound intermittently, regardless of where you are on the map, just to keep the player on their toes. I feel like that last bit may or may not just be cheap jumpscare material tho

Really nice work on the AI. The fact that it doesn't always go after you but instead stalks you for a bit makes it so much scarier.

Imagine if this is the life someone has to live with for eternity, just constantly being stalked, chased, killed and repeat by a being that only has one goal which is to kill you. That idea paired with the creepiness of Gargatron makes it really horrifying.

The sounds you chose for Gargitron were absolutely horrifying, it’s so good. The thumping noises as it gets closer to you are so anxiety inducing, and the subtle static sounds cause this huge feeling of dread. Amazing job on this!

5:47 this is interesting, it reminds me of the horror game "it steals". the game is based around a maze with blue orbs you have to collect, but there's a monster hiding from you, ready to catch you at first absence of mind. it's also really creepy cause you think the monster is gone but you eventually find it and it starts chasing you. would recommend the game if you liked this concept

It's not often KZbin recommends these types of videos from smaller channels and ends up striking gold. Usually most of those feel a bit amateur (as expected) since they come from creators finding their own place in the platform. This video, on the other hand, is very well edited, cohesive, informative and fun to watch. Congrats on the new subscriber!

The scariest nextbot in my opinion is the one he showed in the beginning and there’s another one like that shown and it’s horrifying because of the two pale and lifeless eyes in the middle of that shadow, that terrifies me

The fact that you actually somewhat made a usable AI for a real horror game.. obviously it would require a bit more but that would genuinely be a really good foundation for a horror game enemy, better than alot of horror games do it (just nonstop jumpscares and chasing)

The mangle static you added in is really effective Especially for people like me who have played fnaf 2 obsessively for years. That noise means danger, and makes me wanna react to it and do something about it. Sets off a reaction in my brain. I don't know if that was intentional but it works very well imo

@beanmann0002 жыл бұрын
The thing that makes nextbots so scary is the way they hunt you. They always know where you are, where you’re going, no matter if you’re on the other side of the map. You don’t see them coming, but you just know that they’re going to find you soon enough. Anxiety is a great way to scare people, and nextbots pretty much do that perfectly.
@Jarpington2 жыл бұрын
The scariest thing you can encounter in real life is a person who cannot be bargained with, can't be conversated to, cannot be talked out of anything and only wants to harm or kill you and has no emotion that's why Nextbot images are so unnerving like a person who looks like a person, but you can clearly tell it isn't

This out of place feeling is pretty similar to hellmari in omori. Up until the first time of seeing her you were playing a pixelated game, when all the sudden the illusion breaks and you are reminded this is just a modern program running on your pc, pretending to be a retro game - until now, when it decided to show you that silent, horrifyingly realistic png.

Since The fact that they’re constantly chasing you is another part of why they’re so creepy, you can capitalize on this by making it so that if it hides several times in a row it’s next encounter is guaranteed to be a chase so that feeling of being constantly pursued isn’t eliminated when it hides. Also, another way to make it more dynamic is to make it move faster if the player is far enough away when it starts chasing. Also, while NextBots already have smart pathfinding, Gargitron in particular comes off as an even more intelligent entity as it doesn’t always chase you like an animal, it’s like every time it spots you it’s contemplating whether or not to hunt you down.
