Garibaldi is a municipality in Serra Gaúcha, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in Brazil.
Garibaldi keeps, in its ancient architecture, in the churches that represent the center of the villages, in the capitals along the roadsides in the interior, pieces of history of its origin and its settlement. Privileged in natural beauties, it is located in the region called Encosta Superior do Nordeste, in Rio Grande do Sul.
In a decree of May 24, 1870, the colonies of Conde d'Eu and Dona Isabel were created, which would later constitute the municipalities of Garibaldi and Bento Gonçalves. In 1870, the Conde d'Eu Colony appeared, named in honor of the son-in-law of Emperor Pedro II, Luís Filipe Maria Fernando Gastão d'Orléans, Prince of Orléans and Count d'Eu.
In the second half of the 19th century, immigrants arrived in Rio de Janeiro and were confined to Ilha das Flores, and continued their journey south on steamships in precarious conditions. Arriving in Porto Alegre, they were taken to overcrowded accommodations, followed by boats to Montenegro. To reach Conde d'Eu, the trip could take up to three days on a road that often did not allow the passage of wagons, causing people to carry their luggage, utensils and food on their backs for long stretches.
In 1870, about 15 Prussian (German) families arrived, who found some Portuguese and Kaingang Indians here. These immigrants received help from the government to build their house and tools to start farming. They lived by exchanging food and various tasks, and the work in road construction was paid by the government, but the payment took a long time to reach the workers.
In 1874, with the opening of a trail on the Figueira de Mello Line, there was an increase in the flow of immigrants. And it started the arrival of mainly Italian immigrants, coming mostly from Northern Italy.
At the beginning of 1875, a wave of immigrants arrived in Conde d'Eu, about 40 Swiss-French couples or families, who settled in the lots located on Estrada Geral. Thus, the first colonizing nucleus was formed. The first family of Italian origin that had access to the colony was that of Cirillo Zamboni, from Mattarello, Tyrol, Austrian Empire, on November 15, 1875. On December 24, 1875, the first large wave of Tyrolean immigrants arrived.
The settlers had to dispute land with wild beasts and animals: cougars, jaguars, tapirs, graxains, venomous snakes, among others. They cut down the forests, built their houses first in wood and then in masonry; they organized rich and extensive crops of wheat, corn, barley, and oats, in addition to the vine.
With the progress of the colony, the process of emancipation began. On April 12, 1884, the Conde d'Eu Colony was elevated to the Parish of São Pedro de Conde d'Eu. The District was created on April 26, 1884, by Provincial Law No. 1,455. On October 31, 1900, the parish emancipated itself with the name of Garibaldi, in honor of the farroupilha hero Giuseppe Garibaldi.
The arrival of Syrian families: Koff, Nehme, Mereb, Lahude and Nejar, who developed the center of this city with its large commercial houses, is considered to be of enormous importance in the development and history of Garibaldi.
