There are still many of us who live here in the United States that do speak Garifuna. I am embarrassed to say, I never taught my children who were born here in the U.S. But I am desperately trying to make up by teaching my grandchildren.

I lived among the Garifuna in in 1977-78. Evan back then, they listened to plenty of African American and Caribean music. And, when the older folks did their traditional dances, the teens called them "old heads." Yet when I came back in 1993, they had spawned Punta Rock, sung in the Garifuna language, which had gone viral all over Belize and beyond. Despite prejudice, yes, other ethnic groups sometimes complained when they spoke their own language, this struck me as a very vital culture. I hope I was right.

I don't want to see my culture die out. Something needs to be done about this. Although I was born here in the United States of America, I still consider myself Garifuna because both of my parents are Garifuna. It is sad that young Garifuna people born here in the United States, listen to too much Hip Hop music and live like African Americans. They don't even cook the food that our ancestors ate. Me I love my Garifuna culture and I refuse to live a life like an African American. I don't even like Hip Hop music like that.

@Allen Francisco Garifuna people who were born and raised here in the United States hardly speak the Arawakan language. They listen to Hip Hop music and they act just like African Americans. They forget where they come from and it is sad to see that. The Garifuna people born here in the United States are not African Americans. They are still Garifuna and they should stick to that.

@@danielaugustine9168 The Garifuna people were originally yellow and red caribs, and including Arawak people. @Gualean Creek Lodging Co LLC The Caribs attacked and killed the Arawak men and kept the women. You are right about that. The Carib men intermarried with the Arawakan women after killing the Arawakan men and created the Yellow or Red Caribs. There are people saying that the Garifuna people came directly from Africa which is false. There is no origins or evidence about the Garinagu people originating in Africa. The Caribs and the Arawaks were the original inhabitants of St. Vincent in the Caribbean. There were slave ships that were wrecked on the island of St. Vincent.... The black Africans escaped from those slave ships and got help from the Caribs and the Arawakan people. Sometime later the black African slaves intermarried with the Yellow or Red Caribs and created the Black Caribs or Garifuna race.

@Chicano Azteca The Garinagu people are a mixed race of Carib Indians, Arawaks, and Africans who originated in the island of St. Vincent in the Caribbean. Garifuna people are not from Africa. Do your research.

I noticed the same and I raised the same concerns. I love the Garifuna people but when I visited Belize I was concern the younger generations did not know the language, many only understood it. When a generation who only understands a language dies so does the language. The adults thought it was o.k as long as their kids understood their language. I am happy to hear they are now schools teaching the language.

It's funny how "African-Americans" are being portrayed as the scapegoat for the loss of the Garfina cultural when it was clearly evident that the Garifuna elders made a conscious decision not to teach their own ways; due to willingly wanting to participate in their colonizers ways. Remember to thank an "African-American" when money is being sent "back home" from the United States. African-Americans gave all they had to make it possible for all kinds of people to be treated like a human in the U.S. workplace and in U.S. society.

They forget about the Caribs and the Arawaks who originally came from South America and migrated to St. Vincent years later. The Africans who were on slave ships escaped to the island of St. Vincent and later intermarried with the Caribs and the Arawak Indians which created the black Caribs.
