EZ Moto Tim, I have to say this is such a helpful series! I've been a nitwit for the past few years because I essentially had all of the tools around me, but never took the time to search for training videos on BaseCamp. Activity Profiles are simply collections of settings. Go into Edit/Options/Activity Profile. Select Motorcycling, set how it's setup. When I transfered it into my garmin GPS the route time came up almost an hour shorter from from it had on the desktop. I haven't gone through the turn by turn yet to make sure it transferred correctly but was wondering if there is a setting that I missed while resetting up basecamp? (I deleted it while cleaning the computer and didn't realize so I had to start over from scratch). Again, thanks for these videos.

1) Check to see if you have Fastest Time/ Shortest Route set the same in BaseCamp and on your GPS. 2) Drag more via points into your route. Other than that I don't have a definitive solution.

Tim, I contacted Garmin... I purchased my device in Europe back in 2009 with lifetime European maps. I returned to the states this year and purchased what I thought was North America NT lifetime maps, but it wasn't... The guy said that was probably my issue, since I downloaded the maps only to my device and not my PC when I purchased the maps. Also, he stated that since I would have to pay for each update, it may be more cost effective to get a new GPS with lifetime map updates and a more upgraded system. I wanted a new GPS anyway, so I ordered the Zumo 396 LMTS and Garmin gave me an $80 discount... I hope it will serve me as well as the Zumo 660. Thanks again!

@EZMotoTim3 жыл бұрын
The Global Map is just a place-holder so you see a map when you open BaseCamp. It's not to be used for routing. You need to use Garmin Maps for routing. Load the maps to your computer using Garmin Express. You may need to buy additional maps for areas not included with your GPS.

Hi EZ Moto Tim, your videos have help me a lot in understanding Basecamp for motorcycling, I do have one problem however, my Basecamp does not want to use motorways(UK) between start and finish when I know the route is faster when using them. Preferences are set for "faster" and "interstate" so I wondered if you could help me?
@EZMotoTim3 жыл бұрын
It's hard to tell from here what is going on. Double check your preferences. Remember that checking "Interstates" means you want to avoid using interstates. A viewer in Australia had a similar situation and it turned out to be caused by a gap in the map. Troubleshoot it this way - create a new route between 2 points on the motorway. Continue adding points to see if BaseCamp will follow the road or get off and go around. Thanks for watching.

Then I added a campground, but I could not get the route to recalculate as you showed and could not get the popup window you displayed. I realized if I select both places in the Unlisted Data label, then right-click and select "Create route using selected waypoints", the route began to calculate and display on the map otherwise it did not show the route. Not sure why the popup with the 6 tabs at the top is not displaying on my pc. All updates have been installed.
@EZMotoTim4 жыл бұрын
BaseCamp will work just as well for RV Planning. In addition to being difficult for people to use, BaseCamp is difficult to support without seeing your screen. First check to be sure you don't have the "Global Map" selected in the Maps menu. You should have a "City Navigator..." map selected. The popup with the 6 tabs is the Route Details page. There are a couple of ways to open it. 1) double-click on the route on the map. 2) Click once on the route on the map, then r-click on the route and select "Open." I don't understand why the route is not showing up, but I suspect you don't have the proper map selected. If, after watching all 4 BaseCamp videos, your are still having trouble, you can send me an email with a screen shot and I'll respond.

Hello Tim, Her in Germany is in a navigation Forum a diskussion about the settings in BC for the term - Kehrtwende- at Routing Prefencences. In your US version this is the term U-Turn. What is the meaning, interpretation for U-Turn roads in US and why is this in BC a setting item vor avoidance? Hairpins on moutain roads? ?. Why. Could you explan this.
@EZMotoTim3 жыл бұрын
If you miss a waypoint, the GPS may tell you to make a U-Turn to go back and pick up the waypoint. A "U-Turn" means, "turn around and go back."
@psrfpsrf3 жыл бұрын
@@EZMotoTim Hello Tim, Your answer is just my expectation. There is a different meaning and reason. I was writing of routing preference in tour planning on Basecamp and there you can select Activity Profiles „prevent U-turns“ like prevent Motor Highways. This is on planning not an action you have to do if you miss a waypoit then please turn. Basecamp is not doing this. Basecamp got the order not to use U-turns on his calculation of shortest or quickest direction to the next waypoint. So there must be a special characteristic on the roads which in this way does not exsist in Europe. I found a Video yesterday which confirms my asumption. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHq5k6KPotZ7o7c Also on your highways as I remember driving there you have very wide gras lanes between the two directions of the driving lanes. Every few miles the gras lane is interuppted with connection a lane to the two driving lines. Are they open for everybody to use for u-turns. Again in Europe such wide gras lanes are commonly not present (beside France about meanwhile nearly 55 years ago, I was there first time, on their at that time only exsisting Toll highway Paris Lyon Marsaille, but this room was planed and build up in the 70ties for both directions into the 3 driving lane). So the question is. Is there now if you select for planing provide U-turns an additional attribute set in the nav like waypoints on the „map“ which create a route if the shape of the rosd looks like an U-turn an additional possibilities to drive are present?
@EZMotoTim3 жыл бұрын
The avoidance of U-Turns has nothing to do with hairpin turns or switchbacks on mountain roads. Some roads here have a barrier between opposing lanes. If U-Turns is set to allow, the GPS may take you to the next available opening in the barrier and instruct you to make a U-Turn. If U-Turns is set to not allow, the GPS should route you on streets to make a loop and end up going in the opposite direction.

If you click on N, E, W, S on the compass wheel it will align that specific direction to the top. No need for "Align North Up"

Tim, Outstanding video! Lots of good info there. I have a question. How do you add a map to Basecamp? Here is my issue: Basecamp has the City Navigator North America map version 2021.1 installed in the program. When I connect my Garmin ZUMO XT, I now see a newer map (version 2021.3). I can do all my routing on this new map. However, when I disconnect the ZUMO, the 2021.3 version map disappears from Basecamp. How can I import it so that it is always in Basecamp even if the ZUMO is not connected? If this cannot be done, how do I update the map (version 2021.1) that is already inside Basecamp? Thanks! - Mike

Tim, I stumbled on your other video which answered my question just minutes after I sent you this request. Another outstanding video! Another question: is there a way to remove old and unwanted maps in Basecamp short of deleting them off the computer? I have some maps that I use on my handheld GPS that I don't want to show in Basecamp, but I want to leave on the computer. Thanks a million! - Mike

@@michaellynch2559 Good - you found the Quick Tip on loading the maps to your computer. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2XXnXaIa55kkMU I'll put the link in the description; many people ask the same question. Garmin City Navigator maps are installed the same way programs are installed in Windows. You have to go to the Control Panel / Programs to uninstall them. So it's all or nothing. Maps are installed or not. If they are installed they show in the Maps dropdown selector. Thanks for watching.

@@EZMotoTim Tim, I installed the latest map in Basecamp and on the ZUMO. The new updates also included new software for the ZUMO. I was writing some notes on how to do this and I went back to repeat the process and check my notes and now I no longer see the options to load the map on the Zumo, the computer, or both. What happened??? It only loads on the Zumo now with no other options.
@EZMotoTim3 жыл бұрын
@@michaellynch2559 Connect your Zumo to the computer. In Garmin Express, click on your Zumo. GE checks to see if any updates are available. It should display "Map Update Available" or "Updates Available." Click on "View Details." Click on "Installation Options." You should see the options for Device Only, Computer and Device, Computer Only.

Can u use a Garmin to plan your trip without a computer and Basecamp?I bought this for my dad and want to load maps for him because he doesn't have a laptop at the moment.

Yes, but it's tedious and impractical.

Everytime I try to create a route with Basecamp it freezes up forcing me to reboot the program. I have windows 10 on my laptop and wanted to use Basecamp to make routes for my Garmin Overlander.

There must be something wrong with the installation of the program as this never happens to me, obviously. It may be an access rights issue. The program may not have rights to open the database. Have you installed the Garmin map using Garmin Express? Try running the program as Administrator. If that doesn't work, uninstall and try running the setup program as Administrator. There are many possibilities. It might be helpful to talk with Garmin support. Thanks for watching.

I just bought an etrex 32x unit and just started watching your videos. Although I am a mac user I managed to find the corresponding settings and have begun setting up the program and the unit itself. Just a quick question though, can I load maps to basecamp so I won’t have to plug in the device every time?

I never knew where New Braunfels was. It didn't appear until I zoomed in far enough. Is there a way to "find" the city and have the map centered on that city?

Type in the search box or use the Find menu.

Thanks for the reply. I thought I was doing that but now I see that it works. I have watched all your videos pertaining to Basecamp. Very usefull. I discovered the problem. I was trying to create a route with the Garmin not connected to the computer. Only Global Map was there. Now I have the latest library on both the Garmin as well as the computer. Thanks Chuck

Where would I find the maps that you have downloaded? Is there a cost for the use?
@EZMotoTim4 жыл бұрын
The maps come from Garmin. Some GPS units come with lifetime map updates. For other units you can purchase lifetime map updates. I believe you can purchase the maps from Garmin if you don't have one of their GPSs, but I'm not certain of that.

Tim in the very first few moments of the video you talk of loading maps on the garmin device and the computer. I've loaded maps on my garmin device. I know of no way to load them on my computer (WIN 10). When in base camp with my garmin device plugged in via USB the map appears (not global). I assume you are talking of having the map on the computer to plan routes without the garmin device being plugged in. Is this correct? Then you plug in the garmin device and upload the route. How do I get the map stored on my computer?
@EZMotoTim4 жыл бұрын
See my video on loading Garmin maps to your device and computer. You do it using Garmin Express. You need to have the device connected to load the maps, but you do not need to have the device connected to use BaseCamp to create routes. You connect the device to load your routes onto it.
@edray97664 жыл бұрын
@@EZMotoTim thank you. I had done it successfully, closed basecamp then upon restarting basecamp (same computer session) the loaded map did not appear. The next day, after shutting down the computer for the night, the map did appear. My observation is a computer restart is required for the map to appear. I've gotten it working.
@timsnyder21754 жыл бұрын
@@edray9766 Perhaps a restart is required, but you can probably select the map from the Maps menu item at the top of the screen without a restart.

Thanks for a great video re the set up! I'm new to Basecamp (using it on Mac). I understand the folder structure, but can't figure out the point of a "List". When I want to create a Route, I first have to create a List and then create the Route inside of this List. If the List the way of containing all the info required for a particular route on the map (ie the routing, waypoints, directions, etc), why can one create multiple routes per List? That seems confusing to me. Thanks
@EZMotoTim4 жыл бұрын
Think of a List as a bucket that can contain many items, such as waypoints, routes, tracks, etc. A List is the lowest level folder and Garmin could have called it a folder. Don't think of a List as everything needed for just one route. For instance, a List could be named "Alaska Days 1-5" and contain routes and waypoints for the first 5 days of a trip. Folders and Lists are just devices for organizing your data. Organize them in whatever way makes sense to you.

Tim, Thanks for your detailed description of Basecamp. I'm using a navigator V1 on my BMW rt and have it interfaced with my Mac book Pro. Are the mechanics of the Mac that much different from what you"re doing and is the difference enough to justify getting a cheap PC laptop just to interface with my Garmin Navigator? Thankyou for your help (also 71 and still going strong) Larry
