A great review, which I can vouch for from my own experience (I recently replaced my Bolt v1 with the Edge 530). I miss the ergonomics and simplicity of the Bolt. Setting up the unit is SO MUCH easier using your phone, than the clunky buttons on the Garmin (I kept pressing the wrong one and it took me ages!). That said, once the Garmin is setup, it definitely has more features, like Climb Pro, bike alarm, sharp bend warning, drink/food reminders etc. Also, this may seem minor, but Live Segments is better on the Garmin, since you can race against more than just the KOM or yourself. To summarise my own thoughts, if Wahoo added more features, then I'd get the Bolt v2, but if Garmin enabled setup using the phone's app, then I'd be much happier with my Garmin. In fact I find it a mystery why Garmin don't do this, instead of adding features (like the ability to create maps on the device itself), which I doubt that many people want.

Been using a 530 and the Bolt2 a while and these are my differences. The Bolt2 takes a long time to 'auto-pause' so your ave speed is adversely lower than it is in reality. The Gamin 530 nails this. The top metric on the Bolt is always twice as large as all other info, whereas the 530 allows better screen variations. The 530 wins this hands-down. Sensor Drop Outs- If you stop for coffee, your heart rate sensor sometimes drops out and can't be reconnected mid-ride. You have to save the ride and start another with HR showing again. Grade - The Bolt2 shows a more accurate grade% - the 530 lags behind, but if trees block the GPS, the Bolt's grade goes out of whack. Visibility - the Bolt is brighter and clearer in all light. Buttons and set-up- The 530's 'enter' button is on the top right, contrary to all their other bike GPS's. The Bolt's buttons and smart phone functions are way better. For me- ave speed is important, so I prefer the 530.

I will say that I started with a Garmin 530 that after about 12 hours of road use (never dropped etc) went 'black screen' on me only for me to see extensive web blogs about this problem that only seems to afflict the 530 and not its series siblings; on the Bolt V2 now and can't be happier. @RedWingsninetyone2 жыл бұрын
@@rileym6500 it works well for me, but I also have the V1. Are you planning on creating a route to follow or just using the map in general? Battery life is pretty good. My Bolt is about 3 years old now and I just completed a 100 mile ride with 8+ hours of moving time and 12 hours of total time, including breaks, and had 18% battery left at the end. That includes having a heart rate sensor connected and without navigation (and by navigation, I mean loading a GPX file to follow). In 2020 I completed another 100 mile ride with 10.5 hours of total ride time and finished with 30% battery left. That one didn't have a heart rate sensor attached, but was using navigation and a lot of backlight to start since I started around 5am. You can also plug in an external battery for more juice and it doesn't take too long to fully charge from nearly dead. If you're bike packing, you'll likely be fine using it all day and plugging it in at night. I'm also primarily a mountain biker that does gravel riding too. When using it for mountain biking, I tend to find I tend to use 10-15% per ride, and that includes having a heart rate and speed sensor attached. Sometimes it is even less though. The best part of the Wahoo system is it is very intuitive to use and relatively easy to set up using your phone. If you don't want a data field (heart rate or power, for example) you can simply put something else there.

I have a Wahoo Element Bolt v2 and been using it for over a year. I really like how the buttons are laid out and they are big so easy to press when you are on the move. It definitely is more attractive than the Garmin. That being said, I find the mapping very buggy. One example is often I will get notifications of turns displayed way too late. Another example is when I set a point of interest as my destination, the route it takes goes up and down random streets and no where close to the direction I am suppose to go. I have had my Wahoo crash numerous times when trying to import a gpx route file. That same route file was uploaded to my other friends Garmin devices with no issues.

Also the climb grade percent feature is always wrong. It will show a negative percentage when I’m clearly climbing (like at 6%). Third issue the altitude is not right. So many times my mates have 5k of climbing via Strava, wahoo or different older garmin and I’ll be 1000 feet off. I have called garmin to address these issues and they cannot fix it at all. I've had the Bolt 2 for over a month now, coming from the Garmin 520. The buttons really are much easier to use I always disliked the button positions on the Garmin. I have to say the the zone colour feature I really like especially when you are seeing double in the middle of an interval session it just makes quick reference easy. My 520 didn't have maps and I bought the Bolt 2 for its navigation which I find works really well although the rerouting seems to take you back to where you left the route rather than putting you back in the logical place depending on the complexity of the roads at that point. I don't need many of the advanced features on the 530 so not missing any of them. I don't subscribe to Strava Live Segments but if I did then the Bolt 2 would be a bit of a fail. The problem is it seems to lag somewhat on the GPS so turns come 30 metres late, not a problem for navigation but if starts live segments 30m late than that is a big fail, though I have not tried it. The temperature reading is way out, reading maybe 10% high, not a problem for me as I don't consider it important but it is something they need to fix. There have been a few other reported issues which seem to be pretty much fixed as far as I can tell with firmware updates so hopefully the Strava Live segments issue will be fixed as well. All in all I am pleased with my purchase.

Can any of these two (Edge 530 or Bolt V2) receive heart rate data directly from an Apple Watch 8?

Not that I’m aware of. I think the Apple Watch doesn’t broadcast HR but there are third party companies with apps that transfer HR data. Peloton and Zwift for example.

I already success setup the companion app, the device, pairing all sensors, and connected to wifi and even able to update firmware. however when i want to download new maps, it seems like the device keep disconnected from wifi as soon as I leave the wifi network selection page in the app. previously I deleted the preloaded other countries map, I suppose it got deleted when the wifi keep connected during firmware update. now my device has no map because I can't my it stay connected to the wifi. Any feedback on Wahoo Bolt v2 Strave Segment? I hate Edge 520 Segment I can't change the goal to PR on the fly, which I have to do manually on Strava Web.

I haven't done a lot of testing on that. I have heard that the Bolt seems to have a delay to pulling up strava segments but I'm not sure. I'll have to do some testing.
@mcwills3 жыл бұрын
Is that definitely right? According to Garmin's support site, during the segment, you can choose which effort to be compared against: the KOM/QOM, your PR, your goal, or the time from another athlete. I've only just bought the 530 and haven't test this yet! :)
@jimmymooo3 жыл бұрын
@@mcwills Maybe 530 you can but not on 520. If you search online, the workaround is going to Strava segment on 520 to manually select which to target first. Some doesn't even show PR even though I have rode many times, and the workaround for this is to go to Strava segement dashboard (ONLINE) to set a "goal", then back to 520 to select the goal. I don't know why ppl complain about the buttons on the Garmin. When is mounted on the bike, you don't need to put your finger directly on the opposite side, therefore you're not hitting the opposite button. And with the buttons on the bottom of the unit, I only use them for start and stop, I'm not constantly reaching out to them, so is not a real issue. I had the Edge500 before, but i think the 530 is a great unit, it has tons of great features, their maps are great. Highly recommend

Don’t get me wrong, I like the 530 a lot but those buttons are currently right up against my handlebars and when doing a workout I like to hit the split button right on the interval time. I used Wahoo Bolt V1 for 2 years, then tested Garmin for a bit before buying Bolt V2. This comment might get some angry, but I feel Garmin is like Windows OS wearas Bolt is like a Mac. Bolt has some limitations in terms of no external apps you can use, but that said, it's easy to use. I have some mates who prefer Garmin because of the features but noticed that hardly use those features. Wahoo is easy to use. The new Bolt V2 uses colors in a useful way. Examples are different colors for grade, HR & power data. Live segments work perfectly. Garmin bike computers promise a lot of features that are useful if you need them but hard to get around them. Garmin is great in terms of maps, and Wahoo just sucks in that part. Wahoo on the other hand does not offer a tonne of features, but what it offers is very easy to use so you end up using them more often. Also, while the new Bolt V2 has USBC charging. I think wahoo put some cheap stuff in there. Can't use my iPad charger and cable. Only works with a USB-A to USBC cable. Saw many users reporting this on reddit.

GPS conundrum... Should I always carry two cheap smartphones with removable batteries for bike backpacking, or bite the bullet and shell out some tough dough for a Wahoo.... After much thought I would still have to carry a few spare phone batteries along with at least one power bank to cover my arse for a long journey. So, I think it'll be wise to get a Bolt V2 where I can simply just use the power bank to charge it when it starts running low on juice. Looks like power bank charging is MUCH More promising for the Bolt than for a smartphone in terms of battery life usage! I'm gonna go with this route, a win-win decision, because I would still have two devices for GPS navigating, which at least one is an actual dedicated cycling GPS unit. However, me coming from the Wahoo Bolt V1, I am so happy with the buttons and usability and iPhone setup and kickr integration....I guess I can't take the step to the Edge just for some of the nice features like climb pro. Doing many intervals and structured workouts - usability comes first for me. Being a triathlete I own a forerunner watch and yes, it would be nice to also have the bike data together with all the other stuff at the Garmin portal - which is a lot better than using the Wahoo App!!! However, in my case all training data consolidates at training peaks, so I am good. However, if you use a Garmin watch that may be a plus to also have a Garmin Edge because you can't upload to the Garmin portal from non-Garmin devices.

Good points Dirk! I think usability is the main draw to the Wahoo devices. It’s hard, I like them both for different reasons. Hope triathlon training is going well and thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

I think i might stick with Garmin..as iv been using the 520 since it was released few years back..

Stick with it and maximize the value out of that 520! 🙌 I will say that the 530 does feel like a big upgrade from those ‘20 series devices but it’ll also be interesting to see what they come up with next. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

Apparently the new Bolt's USB charging is non-standard and doesn't work with a lot of true USB power devices/chargers.

I wish I still had this device. I'd love to do some testing. That's the problem with me giving stuff away to all of the subscribers here. Maybe I can borrow one and do some testing. Thanks for letting me know Yoog.

Hi. Amazing review Matt. I wonder if you could help me. I've been having a hard time deciding between these two devices. It will be my very first bike computer and to this day my only tracking device has been Polar Vantage watch. Here are some points of my opinions: - I really dont care about the battery life (I wont do any 300km rides etc. If it lasts for 5 hours, thats enough :D) - I never go to mountain biking and only ride on paved roads - I like the idea of ClimbPro of Garmin, but I dont know if I need that bc I live in Finland and this country is an absolute pancake. - Also im not sure if I would be concerned about the difference between buttons' location, I just think that Bolt looks better, while garmin has a little bigger screen which I like. - I have only cadence sensor, but I probably will buy heart rate sensor and speed sensor - I dont care about Connect IQ, theres nothing for me. So far these devices have been level, but recently I have I have become more inclined with Wahoo but I really can't decide. I dont know if you can even find the point of this comment but thanks for the video anyways!

Good comment with good details about what you’ll use it for. I’d suggest the Bolt V2. It’s a great option for what you like to do and Wahoo added a climbing feature recently. 👌

I think a should stay with garmin because I use watch from garmin and I want combine all my workout in same algorithm to calculate my performance and maybe I do like the garmin ecosystem did.

Yeah, having everything in Garmin Connect helps when looking at training load. I have mixed the two and it’s worked fine. Everything ends up in TrainingPeaks and Strava but it’s things might not add up in other locations. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

It kind of sounded like you wanted to sell the Garmin to us haha The wahoo doesn't have an equivalent to climb pro? Which btw I think must be improved by Garmin..
@mlegrand3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's interesting. I didn't really want to convince anyone to buy one in particular. I'm going back to the old Bolt but I do think I'll miss both of these computers. They're super nice. Ultimately, I'd be inclined to wait and see what these companies do next year. Could be interesting. 🤷♂️ Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

@@mlegrand Do you think Garmin will launch 540 next year? This v2 of bolt is really new, so I don't think Wahoo will update the devices on its price range.

Just moved over to the 530 from a Wahoo roam V1, as the elemnt app has become extremely buggy(crashes when syncing during setup with Komoot) and the support is terrible, I've had a support ticket in for the past 3 months about this problem and it's still not solved, so bye bye Wahoo after about 5 years
@mlegrand Жыл бұрын
Wow, so sorry you had such a hard time with Wahoo kiteFlyer. Hope Garmin treats you better and that you got a smoking deal on that device!!! 💨

Want simplicity? Choose Wahoo. It's the least annoying bike computer as Ride Adelaide said.
@mlegrand3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I agree with that. There is so much stuff that we don’t ‘need’ when out there biking. But that’s just me. I don’t want to speak for what others might want in a cycling computer. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

Garmin is a criminal company. They (tried) to charge me 125€ for a new battery that died only 2 weeks outside warranty. A part that costs them less than 5€ ! Disgusting ! No more Garmin for me. NEVER !
@mlegrand3 жыл бұрын
Oh man Michiel. Super sorry that you had such a bad experience with Garmin. I'd love to see these companies make it easier to repair these devices. Lithium batteries tend to last about 2-3 years, right after warranty runs out. It'd be nice to just quickly and easily buy a 5 battery and switch it out. 🤷🏻♂️. Thank you for watching and taking the extra time to comment. I really appreciate it. 👍

@@mlegrand Many years ago i heard that legislation was in the making to demand from manufacturers that they make their devices battery-replacable. But that is many, many years ago. I guess it won't happen. Too much money at stake. That would cost Apple a gigantic amount of profit, among others. But it would be a gigantic improvement for us AND the environment !

There should be some aero at mounts for the wahoo bolt V2. Were you able to return it and get the computer you wanted? Thanks for posting this feedback for others.
