Garmin eTrex 22X unboxing - Quick compare with GPSMAP 66ST

Grabbed the latest handheld from Garmin, the updated Garmin eTrex 22X. The eTrex 20 series GPS was a bit hit when it came out seven years ago and remains to this day a very popular series of videos for the channel.
So I wanted to unbox it, get some initial impressions and stack it up with the GPSMAP 66ST which I had with me.
The difference between the 22X and 32X is mainly the electronic compass & barometer to justify the higher price tag. So unless the ABC sensor is a MUST, then look at the 32X. But if you are going to pay a higher price tag, why not consider the GPSMAP series which offers a larger screen.
One thing I was surprised was that they did not change the USB charging port. It is the same mini USB port. I would have expected that to get updated to a micro USB port.
The other thing that surprised me was that the unit came preloaded with topo & routable maps (north america). The refresh rate isn't that bad.
Otherwise, the menu and functionality has not changed from the eTrex 20.

I have a etrex 30x let me tell you that's the best digital gear I ever had...spent multi days and weeks in the middle of NOWHERE just with couples of extra batteries...dude god bless usa and their industry, I'm from iran and spending money on this device is pretty hard (and sanctions too) but I believe the quality. You mention Etrex 20. I still have mine and Garmin updates the Firmware quite regularly through my Garmin Express app on my Mac.

Good that there is topo information for Canada and the Northern USA. None for the UK sadly - I'll have to see if it's possible to download open topo data, convert it and overlay it on the Garmin map.

Jim, thank you for doing these videos. I'm a casual day hiker who has a tendency to get lost...especially when I hike solo. I have an Etrex 20x and every summer I have to relearn how to use it. The interface is definitely 1990, and not very intuitive if you don't use the gadget on a regular basis. Your videos have been very helpful. I'm thinking of upgrading to the 22x simply because of the active topo maps. Are they good enough to be used for hiking? In other words, do they have common hiking trails on them? It would be great to have maps already built-in without having to buy better maps from Garmin or trying to download free ones.

They’ve been very good so far at least in my region. I’ve had 3 map updates since this video so that’s good to know that they will update. You can probablyfind a OSM map or other product in SD cards if you are not ready to say goodbye to your 20x. But if you are looking for an update, the new maps certainly make a good argument.

No SOS feature on the 22X. The only radio it has is ANT+ used to pair up sensors like chirp, heart rate strap, that kind of stuff.

I own an old yellow Etrexx dinosaur of a gps machine. It’s very old. It still works but it’s quirks are a mess.

Would it be worth getting a USB cable for it and updating the firmware? There is a bug in older GPSs to do date and time, which appeared earlier this year (2019). I updated my old Etrex H to the new firmware and it's as good as new.

Hi, you probably get this question a lot. Is the Garmin 22x better than a iPhone for hiking? I can still get pretty accurate gps with iPhone and the interface is much easier to navigate. So I am wondering what is the advantage Garmin has over iPhone?

Your phone is probably the most important piece of equipment and for something that spends its time in yours hands or mounted under climate conditions , drops into water or rocks and long durations I always use a gps and keep the phone safely tucked away and if things go very wrong it’s a backup.

Just looking back at this. Ignoring the map detail as I would use different maps. What is better in the real world about the 66 vs the 22 ?

The 66 as the screen and refresh rate is better. It also leveraged Garmin explore so that you can sync & store tracks, waypoints. The more I use the 22 the more I think they only changed the case color and didn't update any internals which the eTrex 20 was old to begin with

I can't get mine to work. It won't work unless it is plugged into the wall. The moment I pull it out of the wall, it shuts off. Is there anything I can do to fix that?

Can you please assist me here. I'm planning on getting the Etrex32x. I've always used my phone's Google maps for navigation. My primary usage of the Etrex32x will be navigating when I'm solo hiking in unexplored locations and also as the primary navigation gps system for my car. How accurate will it be? Can it track me under tree cover and while surrounded by buildings? Also, Garmin maps are quite expensive. Will I be able to load free maps from other sources for the Asian region and the North America Region? (Mostly Ontario province, CA). I'm spending my 3 months worth salary on this equipment as it's quite expensive here.

GPS chips on a garmin are better than on a smartphone. I’ve covered in another video how to get free sources and in that one showed where you can see the options for the regions you mention although the pre-loaded map region that comes on the devices is pretty good (TopoActive) and gets regular updates via garmin express, just I recommend getting a SD card for these extra maps.

Hallo Jim, Can I type in a coordinate (N xxx.yy W @t for instance ) and name this waypoint , or is it reduced to scroll to an approximate coordinate on a map, zoom in, fix that point and enter it? For lake navigation, tja, it is very hard to scroll to a point on a blue field (where is it then?) but I need a string of numbers to enter (location of a wreck for example). Thanks, Louis

yes. just mark a waypoint then edit the coords field to the precision you need. You can also drop a pin on the map page, then edit. You have a few options.

Gps will work anywhere, just Tye preloaded map is typically limited and depending where you go you most probably need to get additional maps (eg - NA device going to Europe)

No. You'll find subscription for inreach. With eTrex the only thing you'll pay for are additional maps

@@AvoidingChores Or you can adapt OpenStreetMap maps for the Etrex, for free. There's a few KZbin videos and web sites devoted to this. Some people have created their own free maps that can be downloaded directly.

@@AvoidingChores Thank you - I have been converting and putting OSM maps onto my Etrex 10, and have just bought a 22x, and I was wondering why the landmarks and points of interest on both maps seemed so similar, so the fact the 22x free maps are OSM, explains that. My next step will be to try to get detailed topographic information onto the free maps.

Hello Mr. Jim. Greetings from Belgium. I bought the 22x last week. I downloaded the latest official maps from Garmin Express on the device. Then i installed Base Camp on the computer. Than i downloaded a map of Belgium via Openstreetmaps and i had detailed maps(of Belgium) on Base Camp. I think Base Camp does not come with detailed maps. I made a little route in Base Camp and transferred it to the device but it says i have to recalculate the route, after pressing YES it says: Route Calculation error, Maps do not have routable roads in this area. What is the problem? Is there a difference between the maps from Openstreetmaps and those from Garmin Express? Thank You for your time.

So both maps layers are on the eTrex? It sounds like you have the non rout able map as top layer. You might try making it hidden so that the map youade the route is top layer. That might work

So it's not displaying after you got a satellite fix? Try this from the map screen..... Press menu | map setup and I think it's Configure maps. You should see if the maps are enabled or it. Also I assume you are in North America so the map name has NA.

You can always disable all then flip one on as you watch the map page load. It could be that where you are the map isn't as detailed. That's how I figured out it was using a different map product than what my GPSMAP 66st has pre loaded. If that don't work call up Garmin support as it is under warranty
