Thank you for the compliment and thumbs up. Yah, I have 12 or more of these and none of them have been free. I'm planning on adding the Garmin Tread series soon, but I'll be starting with the least expensive of those as they are the most expensive. I have a lot of videos planned for 2024 and many more ideas to keep growing the channel. Thank you for stopping by and leaving the comment. Rick

About my experience hiking,climbing in the Swiss Alps and also with bike and car i will stay with my 750i. It Is big, i know but for me is really good. I have the Mini 2 too and Delta Tactix watch. Many times a had been in the midle of nowhere, with snow, really windy,high altitud and i had no problem at all with the 750i. The lowest temperature that i was with the Montana 750i was -28 Celsius and worked pretty good. Battery is keeping long time. In bad weather, low and high temperature works amazing. The reason to buy the Mini 2 is because i want have a second change if i lose the Montana 750i. Cheers 👍

Watching friends use other touch screen Garmin navigators while hiking convinced me to never buy one. Once it starts raining, operating the device via touch screen becomes very difficult. The raindrops interfere with the screen's ability to detect touch. Great comparison of these two devices, I've been curious about the new Montana products and how they stack up to the other Garmin units.

This might be the conventional wisdom had I not worked with veterans who made their iPhones work for them in the field in Iraq & Afghanistan. Granted it was a desert environment but when it rained they moved under light cover. And for the remaining 95% of the time - no issues.

Hey Rick, excellent video. Thanks to you I’m probably going with the 67i and pairing it to my iPad for when I’m driving in the wilderness. I just did an experiment with my Fenix 5x Plus around the neighborhood and it did great, so I’m going to presume the 67i will perform just as well. Thanks 😊

@@outdooremergencytech Hi Rick. Early March 2024, and during a road trip from Dallas to Houston after the April 8, 2004 eclipse, My iPad would link with both my 67i and my Fenix 5x Plus as I was driving. But you had to pick one to use at a time. I preferred the 67i but it doesn’t have the same ease of use as my Fenix 5x Plus as far as recording my movement. If I needed a large high resolution map with a lot of run time, pairing the 67i and iPad seemed to be a good combination. Thanks again for the information. Andy C.

Can you get good mapping on the Garmin products like the 67i and 750i for South America, particularly the Andes and Patagonia?
@outdooremergencytech
@outdooremergencytech Жыл бұрын
First, you do get detailed "worldwide" maps on the GPSMAP 67i, but not the 66i. I don't have my Montana with me today so I just talked with Garmin about the Montana 700i / 750i and here's what they said. The Montana 700i & 750 operate like the 66i. You only get sections of the world, and you may get South America maps if you buy the 700 series in South America. You can always get more detailed maps by purchasing them or if you get the Outdoor Maps+ subscription for $49.99 per year but they don't have as much to offer on maps compared to the 67i. I suspect the Montana series is due for an upgrade soon, but Garmin would not tell me anything about that. If you want more information, I would recommend you call and talk to Garmin Customer Support as I am at the limit of my knowledge of the maps on the Montana series. Rick

I ended going 67i for backcountry Snowmobiling. Main reason, the 67i is considerably smaller, and buttons can be used with gloves on, and way better battery life. Now I can wire in a charger on my Sled, but mounting the Montana is gonna get beat up, knocked off, etc. Riding tight technical treed terrain, and the sled gets rolled over, to get unstuck, ( trust me, it's easier). I just wish I had the 7s guage cluster, that keeps track of other sled that have that polaris guage. It's an on a map display, showing where each rider in your group is, accurate to 3 feet.

I know you track other riders in your group if they all had inReach satellite communicators, but they would need to have the professional plan. That's something I have talked with Garmin about several times and will probably get myself soon so I can show people how it works in future videos. Rick

@@outdooremergencytech : That would be a great feature! I spent a few hours looking it up online, and couldn't find anything definitive. It would be really great if it would connect to the Polaris 7s display, with ride command, but that's probably too much to hope for. The Trail tech voyager pro is supposed to, but that's yet another device. Would be nice if these companies would play together better.

@outdooremergencytech
@outdooremergencytech 2 ай бұрын
The Montana would work for you, but my opinion is it's best in a vehicle and not as good on foot. If you want something good for navigating there, plus being great for hiking or backpacking, I personally would go with the Garmin GPSMAP 67i. I have both devices, plus the Mini 2, and for that matter the Mini 2 would work well, but you would have to rely on being synced to your phone more and using the Explore App and Messenger App. I was born in Tacoma and raised in Washington and Oregon so I know the area fairly well. I would like to help more if you can provide a little more information. Do you need it primarily for off-road driving directions with very little hiking, or do you need it more for hiking or backpacking? The problem with the Montana is that it's extremely large and heavy, plus it really needs to be plugged into your vehicle to keep charging as the battery will die quickly. I will never claim to be the expert. This is only my opinion on using all of these satellite communicators here in Colorado. Let me know if you have any other questions or if you would like to provide additional information. Rick
@pizzasuits
@pizzasuits 2 ай бұрын
@ Thanks for the details Rick! I primarily work out in remote watershed areas both in and outside of Toppenish, such as the Mt. Adams range. I have a horrible sense of direction, so I would need the GPS for the on-road portion of the trip (preferable turn-by turn- navigation) as well as off-road portions such as the back roads and off road trails with no signage, and no internet connectivity. For example, I may need to drive down a remote stretch of highway, then turn off the highway down an unmarked road. I might have to drive down the twisty unmarked road for miles with many forks, then park the truck, then walk a mile or two to a specific spot/ location. Locations are usually areas where I need to retrieve things like streamflow measurements or perhaps drop/collect equipment from waterways at a specific spot that I need to be able to retrieve at a later date. Always in the middle of nowhere. I definitely don’t want to rely on my personal phone for these things. I prefer a sturdy GPS that has simple waypoint features that I can easily label and get to again. Maybe even a feature that traces my path so that I may be able to record the rout and backtrack. I’m new to GPS so my vernacular is likely off lol. Yep, direction isn’t much of a problem when I’m with a coworker such as a tribal member who grew up in the area, but when it’s just me I need a GPS that can get me to marked spots again and again without fail. Thanks again.

It sounds like the Montana 700i or 750i would be the best for you. The 750i can take geolocated photos so you can find the waypoint in the future but it also has the photo referenced to it. @ I checked out both the Gar Montana and the Gar 67 at the Capella’s store… just to get a visual. I’m genuinely impressed by both. The only two things that put me off from the Montana is the fact that it’s a touch screen (might not be the best for extreme environments) and the software suite (might be too complex and overkill for what I need). If the Gar 67(i) can calculate routs on-road/ off-road, and has waypoints (editable w/labels) and tracking capabilities, then the 67 might be the way to go. Also if I can set the vehicle portion of a trip/route to stay on the road whilst driving to a waypoint ONLY until i want it to lead me to the proper designated turn off , I would be fine with that. I know that Montana has a camera, but do you know if 67/67i has one? Thanks Rick!Your vids are very helpful!

Great tips… I LOVE the replaceable battery (the 700/700i/750i) will LAST a lot longer “useful ownership life” since you can swap out batteries for $40 or so. Sadly much less “useful operational life” on one battery… perhaps due to screen usage? I must tell you your information is wrong on the battery life on the 700i. I have used it now since it first came out. All day long on hikes all across usa. It runs soon as we hit the trailhead to when we get back. The battery never get's below 80%. Please learn how to use these things.

Every device may be slightly different and my observations are based on many field tests, not only from my 750i but a friends 750i. I'm glad to hear other people's opinions and experiences. Thank you for letting me know how you like your700i's battery life. Rick

Seems a 700i is a 700i. How can one guy get long long battery life and another not so? I believe it's in how to use it. I mean you for one didn't know the name of the type of cable used as well as the memory in it so I don't think you know how to use this and how to carry it. Putting a gps like these up high on your pack strap is odd. So Don't run lights on the screen outside. Don't need it on this unit. Also double touch the display to set it off but the unit still is tracking and navigating. Simple to do. Works well. Also for those who are considering one the size isn't anything to be turned from. It fits find in my pockets,also the front chest strap on my pack in a pouch that my Montana 680 fit into. The weight seems about the same as my 680 as well. I've owned a ton of all kinds of gpsr's since 1995. Marine,Hiking,Auto. And this 700 is the cat's meow. This as well as yours if my opinion.

You're right about one thing. The battery life depends on how you use it. I put mine through a lot during the time I test it so that may be your answer. I appreciate you bringing up some good points and I'm going to do some more field tests on my 750i but I would like to ask you to be more respectful in your comments. I have made some mistakes while testing but I will always give you my honest opinion as I test these. Rick
