Garmin Zumo XT Part 2

Hi Guys, part 2 of 3 part video series on the XT. Shows how to initially set-up the XT, if you have an Apple iMac computer. I have no experience with windows computers . Its all a bit basic if you already have a Garmin Zumo! Anyway i hope it helps someone.

section 1)
5:55 to15:16 turn on/off, install sd card, register with garmin express, install Garmin drive app
section 2)
15:16 to 20:27 connect to wifi, install android file transfer, transfer MP3 music etc onto the SD card
section 3)
20:27 to 22:40 connecting a bluetooth headset(Sena 10S) and possible problems and best order to connect devices

Thanks , I did say in part 3 that the sending of smart messages wasn’t 100 % reliable BUT I now believe that I hadn’t set notifications for emails up properly on my iPhone 11, so operator error! It’s a great bit of kit , I just wish the garmin basecamp route planner was easier to use and it was an app on your phone or iPad not your home computer! It would be great if my Sena headsets radio frequencies showed up as a radio app on the zumo for ease of use but hey you can’t have everything. I’m very happy with the unit , just gotta keep playing with it in the comfort of your home to learn to get the most out of it 👍

This is really helpful, thank you! The manual that came with the XT was useless. I also had problems trying to pair and update the unit as my XT was delivered stuck in demo mode. So wifi was deactivated and the pairing/ Garmin Drive setup kept getting interrupted. I solved it by going to volume menu from home screen & then pressing & holding the top right hand corner of the screen which accesses a developer menu. Demo mode can be turned off from there. I hope this info is useful to someone else & stops them tearing their hair out (like me!!)

So, here's a question I'm still wondering about. Is there any additional setup necessary if you're needing to hook in a second headset for a passenger? Or, say if you were going to use this and you were going to intercom with another rider in a group in addition to Drive and your own phone and headset? Would the setup and connection chain remain the same inside the Zumo?

Hi. Many thanks for this it was very useful. One thing you should perhaps cover is creating and uploading routes from Basecamp to the Zumo specifically on a Mac. No way, No how could I get Basecamp to recognise my Zumo XT and despite many lengthy emails back and forth to Garmin Support the matter was not resolved. This, for me, was a vital function and, according to the product page on the website, is perfectly possible. I have had to return my XT to Garmin for a replacement in case my unit was in some way faulty. If you can connect via USB to Basecamp on your iMac I would be very grateful to know how you did it. Many thanks for these very detailed and informative instructional videos.

Hi , basecamp is definitely not for the faint hearted . My xt connected with it fine on my 2010 Mac . As a programme I think it needs updating to be more user friendly ! Honestly though, I am using scenic on an iPad and then sending the gpx file to the xt BUT you still have to check the imported route and sometimes alter it within the xt. so it’s not 100% reliable and I think you can only add 29 points on any one route ? It’s my first dedicated gps and I love it . People have just gotta sit there and play with it to get the best out of it . I haven’t flown an Airbus for several months , like many fellow pilots due to the cv19 and am back in the simulator in a few weeks to hopefully get current again in the UK hence the delay for part 3 , practical use of the xt, . I must get it done as soon as .... maybe this week , just have to edit it , once my sim study has slowed down a bit ! Ride safe 😀

I had the same problem with my Zumo XT and a 2020 MacBook pro. Here is what I discovered. The problem is that if Garmin Express or any other software connects with the Zumo XT, the computer resources used for the communication link never get released after Express or other software is shut down. I don't know if this is purely an OSX issue or a combination of OSX and the Android operating system Garmin uses on the XT. Either way, if another program was 'talking' to the XT prior to starting Basecamp on a Mac, then Basecamp will not detect the XT even if you shut down all other programs. (This does not happen with my Montana 650 on a Mac) I did the following. I set up preferences for Garmin Express so that it will not automatically start when I plug a Garmin device into the USB port. I also stopped it from running constantly in the background (that is the default Garmin sets when Express is installed.) If I used Garmin Express to update software or load maps, I unplug the Zumo XT when finished and plug it in again when I want to use Basecamp. This forces the Zumo XT to reboot. Sometimes, this does not work, and the solution is to reboot the computer and the Zumo XT. That seems to work every time. If the MacBook goes to sleep with the Zumo XT connected and Basecamp open, it will not detect it when the computer wakes up. Same deal - I have to reboot the XT and the Macbook. These are issues that were common and expected on 20-30 year old computers and operating systems. Sucks that we have to deal with this in 2020 with a new $500 GPS.

Just select your saved route from scenic , then select export as a gpx file then send it to the garmin drive app on your phone . It will say copy to drive next to the garmin app symbol . Next time you connect the phone with the xt fro m memory it should export it !! Or u may have to go into the route planner app on the xt and select import a route . It will give you several ways to save it so try both and check the route as one way gives u a straight line between waypoints and the other follows the roads !!! Simple but u need to play with the thing otherwise u will end up throwing it against the wall !!!!!

Just come back from a tour of the Normandy landing beaches and I tried a few things out . Firstly I disconnected the WiFi /Bluetooth on the zumo and just used it purely as a sat nav and used the tft connected to the phone and headset for music and phone calls . That worked well as I could use the bmw whizz wheel . Then tried turning the WiFi Bluetooth of the zumo on and connected that to my phone also which gave me turn by turn voice from the garmin to my sena headset and also still allowed me to use the BMWs whizz wheel to select my music phone calls etc . So that worked well . Try a few different things out and see what works for you 👍

Hi there, I enjoyed the video. I have a question about connecting a iPhone and a Cardo packtalk, which I know you used a Sena. So we're on the same page from the start, The way I understand you have to connect your phone to the XT and the Packtalk to the XT. So in other words the XT becomes the intermediary or the go through device. I would like it so that when I"m just running around town I don't need the GPS on to have an active connection between the Packtalk and the phone. On the packtalk you can pair a second bluetooth device eg another phone or GPS. I'd like to know if you or anyone has done this and is there any functionality lost or confusion between devices?

Hi and thanks for the comment.👍 I’m not sure is my honest answer ! I get the logic I think 🤔. For me if I don’t need the xt I just leave it at home and use the Sena and iPhone connected directly to each other it if it’s on the bike then I will connect them all as per the video . Love the xt could do with auto dim function though . I can’t seem to get rid of the advance warning irritating ping of an upcoming speed restricted zone ... drives me nuts tried everything!!

On Gold Wing I have external bluetooth plugged into the auxiliary to receive music from my iPhone. Here's the problem I have when using the XT. I can connect to XT from phone and listen to music but the navigation still continues thru the external speaker on XT.

Hi . Just off the top of my head .... the garmin drive phone app , which is the means by which the zumo navigation side talks to the phone which then talks to the headset to give you headset directions, may not be connected properly. In the video somewhere I mention this that there are 2 Bluetooth addresses that need to be connected to the phone one ends in “LT”or similar . Try making sure that your phone has x2 Bluetooth connections, possible that your garmin drive app is not connected to the zumo xt hence the reason the navigation audio is coming from the xt speaker ...... but I could be totally wrong !

Hello, Just my opinion about the price... Just check how much the BMW navigator VI (also Garmin) is sold... which is far behind the garmin XT... NAVIGATOR = 849€ or+/-770£ GARMIN XT = 499€ or +/- 450£ Just saying...

I see you installed a 64GB SD card. I tried to do that and it won't recognize it. Do you have any ideas? I am working via a mac. Did you have to format it first?

Andy H hi. Have you tried another sd card , sometimes they can be a bit funny and not be able to be read. I didn’t have to format mine and there is no mention of this in the manual. Garmin does say, under a general search of “formatting sd cards” that they should be ms-dos (fat). Maybe try putting it into your Mac and try formatting it via disk utility etc and see if that helps.

Hi, really enjoyed your video and as a hardened Tom Tom user over the years I decided to go for what is probably the best motorcycle nav on the market at the moment but no matter what I do, I cannot get BT and BLE to show on my phone. It should be noted that I am using Samsung Galaxy S20FE. Also, Ive uninstalled and then reinstalled the Drive app many times in order to try and resolve this but getting nowhere fast. Also, I cannot see the Smartphone Services in the connected list. I have followed your steps to the letter and just about all the steps mirror the android anyway but I am at a loss now . I understand Im using a different medium i.e. Android as opposed to iPhone but just cant seem to get the answers anywhere. By the way, Ive consumed a packet and a half of milk chocolate Hob Nobs and several cups of tea .... ;-)

I have just spent the last 20 mins once again trying to make sure everything is as it should be but on looking for the "complete set up" button .... I found there isnt one and at that point the video stops for me. I followed the rest in case I missed something but no, I think Ive done all I can. I must therefore assume that things are as they should be?? I have had to laugh about it despite the frustrations because I must be one of those unlucky people where things never go according to plan and never mirror what ever instructions/directives/suggestions are given or found. Im thinking my phone contract is up in 6mths so I may switch to Apple then as it does appear that tech things "appear" to be more straight forward than Android (I could be wrong but its just my current assumption). I'm sick of chocolate Hob Nobs now .... have changed to Custard Creams 🙂

@@brussalis try a factory reset of the zumo and see if that works . Bluetooth is Bluetooth . Custard creams are yummy 😋. Down in the French Loire valley area in my Motorhome with my German Shepherds so I don’t have the zumo /bike to hand to have a look 👀. Can you delete all Bluetooth items from your phone , sometimes it’s a handshake thing that has driven me nuts over the years with electronic stuff and forced me to alcohol 🥃

Hey man, I'm back with another issue that you may be able to help with.. I had my Garmin XT professionally installed and when it's in the cradle it turns on as it should when I start the bike. Today I took a long ride and the gps screen kept going dark and stayed dark most of the time. The gps finally turned off completely due to the battery being fully exhausted. There is definitely power going to the unit since it turns on when the bike is turned on. I called Garmin and got one their techs who said that there was probably a loose connection so I went out and put the unit in the cradle and checked the connections that I could see and they were good. I started the bike and the unit turned on but after a couple of minutes it flashed a low battery warning and cut off while the bike was running. The unit was doing a few other weird things. I checked for updates and it's up to date. I think there's a problem with the unit but tech would not open a case. She said I needed to check the wiring and call back. Do you have any ideas or suggestions that could help? I hope I can get this issue resolved without having to return to Cycle Gear.

have you tried the unit mounted to a friends power cradle ? just to see if it’s the cradle causing an issue. what about using the usb to charge it from a power bank or USB port on your bike again to try and point the finger at what may be the issue, does the screen switch off or go to a low brightness screen?

@@gsd32i I haven't tried on a friend's bike but I have on usb on the computer, and it seems to charge that way. I'm going to do some more testing. The screen was going to low brightness and flashed to regular brightness before going back to low brightness & eventually turning off.. I'm going to try the things you mentioned when I'm feeling better. I'm having some health issues right now. Thanks for your help man. It's much appreciated.

I'm learning a lot from your videos and responses. I feel bad about asking so many questions, but I can't find any other source as reliable as your youtube videos. I would like to know how to play mp3 files from a sd card. I have found a way to puit files into internal memory, but I have a very large music library that I would like to play while I'm riding. I don't want to exhaust the internal memory capacity with my music library. Please tell me how to play files on sd card.

just drop the mp3 music files onto the Zumos sd card and then you should be fine. The maximum sd capacity is 256 gb .🤪

@@gsd32i I loaded the mp3 files to the sd card and put the sd card into the Zumo and when I went to play music, a message said that I need to load music into the zumo music folder. Zumo didn't recognize the mp3 files on the sd card, so I loaded the files directly into the music folder which is using up the internal memory. I want to load more songs onto the sd card and use it rather than exhausting the internal memory.

I had to go and watch the video as it was done 2 years ago! go to my zumo part 2 video , go to 17 minutes 10 seconds, this is when it shows you how to store mp3 onto the sd card FOR APPLE users. this should do the trick.i remember it took me ages to work out how to store mp3 files onto the sd card. Basically you can't simply plug the sd card into your computers sd slot and drag and drop. You have to plug the zumo , with the sd card inside the zumo,into your computer and then access the zumo's operating files, and here you have the facility to drag from your desktop music files, onto the zumos sd card listed under the operating files or similar . hope this helps.

Quite simple , the Garmin drive app, that you download onto your phone ,acts as the information hub and sends all that information to the screen of the zumo xt having retrieved all that information by its 3/4g data connection 🤪

Have you tried going to settings , select map and vehicle , scroll down to myMaps and select this. Make sure all the list of maps have the blue tick in the box . Yup i need mine to get me into town lol 😆

@@gsd32i Hello Again I have Got the Zumo XT Now and unlike the 400/550/600/660 Zumos , I had before it was a 2 minute job to upload a Picture into the JPEG Folder on the Zumo , Then you went into Tools and then Picture Viewer and Selected the Picture with your Contact details , Then when you turned on the Zumo it would appear on a Splash Screen as the Zumo was Starting up . I have Searched every option i can Find on the XT and Cannot find a way to do this Unless someone else has worked it out. This was Really useful in the event of the Zumo being lost or Stolen and dumped . i hope this helps Cheers Francis

Hi . Just wondering if you are using your own cable or the garmin one to connect it to the computer . Some cables only allow what’s at the end of it to charge and NOT share data ? Just a thought !

. My normal job is at 39000 feet and having not flown for nearly 3 months we have recently been given a back to work start date , which means 2 days in the simulator which in between doing the wife’s todo list around the house and now study , sadly the editing of part 3 is on the back burner for a very short while . @LeMortso ah if that’s the problem it happened to me . I did a video on how to get music onto your sd card from your iMac . It’s easy . Have a look at my zumo videos it’s on one of them . Anderoid for Mac is the software you need . As the zumo doesn’t recognise the iMac music software format and you can’t just drag and drop your iMac music onto the sd card . I am doing something else at the moment so haven’t got time to see which video it is but it’s on one of them . Easy fix don’t get too frustrated !! 👍 Update go to part 2 15mins 16 seconds

I formatted my card in my mac per their instructions (MS-DOS, GUID partition map) but I think when I put the MP3 folder there I didn't have the songs at first level, I put whole albums in in their folders. Will try just putting songs in the MP3 folder directly. Thanx Again!
