Garos Tribe performs Wangala Festival Nokrek in Meghalaya Dress
This video is about Garos Wangala Festival. Garo Tribe performs in Meghalaya Dress in Nokrek and Hornbill Festival, Nagaland. This display of Garo Culture through Wangala dance in Garo Traditional dress is worth a watch. Khasi dress and Garo Dress speaks volumes about the Meghalaya culture. Hope you enjoy this video. Please share and comment if you do.
The Wangala Dance is the most important dance form of the Garo tribe from Meghalaya. It I also known as the Wanma Rongchua, Wanmaor more popularly as The Hundred Drums Festival.
I loved the Wangala Dance by Garo Tribe. I loved the sound and movements, especially those of the leader. I can watch it all day! This video is depicting the harvesting scene. I shot this at the Hornbill festival, Kisama. Near Kohima, Nagaland, India!
This high energy dance is performed by both married and unmarried Garos after the harvesting season. The Garos express their gratitude and say thanks to the sun God Misi Saljong aka Pattigipa Ra’rongipa for bestowing upon them a good harvest.
The dance is mostly simple and follows the rhythm. The main musical instruments played are flutes, drums and trumpets which are made up of horns. The dance starts from the home of Nokma and continues from home to home. Different villages have different dates for the Wangala festival. Wangala dance is usually celebrated between September to October.
I had the opportunity to see Wangala Dance by Garo Tribe at the amazing Hornbill festival of Kisama near Kohima in Nagaland. The local cultural dances are performed at the Hornbill festival ground which is akin to a large stadium. On one of the days, same dances and songs were performed twice a day, i.e, before the announcement of lunch and after it.
Avoid one set of performances unless you really like something. Like, I did a repeat watch of the very eccentric and fun Wangla dance by the Garo Tribe.
I particularly loved the colors, flawless pattern of the Wangala dance and the grandeur. To me, their music sounded more like the announcement of a war than a harvest event. Apart from Meghalaya , the Garo people also live in Assam and Nagaland in India. They are also settled in Mymensingh in Bangladesh.
