The Garrett AXT is a good Lower priced Pulse Induction option that is basically a turn on and go detector (a good option for newbies). I give Bearkat4160 credit for keeping both machines with similar sized Double D coils on each one for this video. But for starters Fine gold was designed for the Mono loop coils (I was actually surprised fine gold being optimized for mono coils worked with the dd coil, as the manual and training video's recommend against using the two together as you end up with a doubling of the ground canceling from each one separately costing you depth when used together). A better way to compare the GPX with the DD coil would be in Normal timing and/or Sensitive Extra timing (designed for the DD coils use). Yes the GPX5000 is more complicated to use than the AXT, But once you fully understand the Minelab GPX settings and set up the machine correctly about the only machine that will out perform the GPX5000 is the newer GPZ7000 for depth and the SDC2300 on supper small stuff. I am confident that the GPX5000 using the 11" dd coil and with the threshold set correctly in the Sensitive Extra timing with out any further fine tuning of the other optional settings would have easily nailed all of the target nuggets in this video. One of the additional benefits of the GPX5000 over the ATX is it's flexibility if you understand how to select the appropriate settings for the coil being used and the ground you are working, where the ATX has primarily just all metal mode or discriminate mode to chose from with adjustable sensitivity (Garrett, Whites and some minelab machines, also known as Gain in Minelab GP/GPX terminology). Yes the ATX is less complicated, but it is also much more limited if it's user is in a difficult area to work. I am not knocking ether machine, just simply stating that they both have their place in this great hobby. As far as a turn on and go Pulse Induction machine that is reasonably priced the Garrett ATX is definitely worth a look at. The ATX was never originally meant to be a direct competitor for the GPX5000, it was made as a lower priced alterative for those who wanted a GPX's performance v.s. a VLF (Very Low Frequency) machine but couldn't afford one to still be able to get a P.I. Machine.

In Bearkat4160's newer video "Don't use Fine Gold on GPX 5000 vs Garrett ATX" at about 0:30 seconds into the video he even states that he recommends using the Sensitive Extra timing. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHy4gGmXnMSNftU Bearkat4160 also has this video showing both machines options to choose from. "Mono Coil on GPX 5000 vs Garrett ATX DD - Part 4" kzbin.info/www/bejne/rGHRcn-ljrqZaJY Here is Bearkat4160's depth test of both machines on a larger nugget at depth. Thanks for the time you have taken to set up this comparison Bearkat - much appreciated mate! I'm sure you have noticed that the ATX runs with a much more stable threshold and cleaner operation in all conditions - stable threshold means you won't miss the 'whispers'. Happy prospecting! Warren.

Yes I totally agree it is very complicated to the uninitiated, it took me well over 6 months to come to grips with my first GP detector. Things that did help me along the way was the free minelab training days offered to new buyers well worth the time to do since you have spent well over $5000. Joining a detector club where most users own a some kind of minelab detector and picking there brains about how they setup thier machines. Most of the GPX series have more settings than the spaceshuttle but at the end of the day you will most likely only use a half a dozen of those settings and adjust them to suit the ground you searching. Dont give up on the 5000 as of yet once you get it tuned and setup right it will blow that ATX out of the ground. Cheers Nuggetmann

Hey Bearkat4160 ... good to accidentally run across this old video today. It was this video and the full complete test series you did on the SDC2300, that made me switch brands and go with the ATX. I have all 3 coils for it and was still under $2500. Thanks Bearkat!!

I'd like to see a comparison with both detectors tuned / configured / optioned to their absolute peak. The best the Garrett ATX can produce V the best the Minelab GPX5000 can produce. Regardless of the cost of extra coils etc, most of us are prepared to pay whatever it costs to get the most out of our detector when it comes to finding gold. Thanks

it's funny with the prices now that minelab re released the gpx 4500 making it cheaper than the atx here in australia. But i have to say your test sort of missed the point of why you need a pi machine by testing in that sand, you probably would of hit those targets better with your at gold vlf machine in that ground? Oh and did you have any threshold on? i cant hear it in this video so i cant hear if the minlab hit those targets or not cause its sometimes only a slight threshold pull heard not those big screamer signals you were getting. cheers and thanks for the video :)

Not a good idea mate. Minelab is the best in the world for a reason. Here in Australia you don't see any other detectors. With a nugget Finder 12" mono coil you will pick up fly specs at 6" deep.

Bearkat. I have been detecting for 35 years in Australia and have used most detectors ever made. You are absolutely correct in saying that the 5000 is far too complex and leaves too much room for error when trying to set it up. There is no setting that suits all sizes and depths of nuggets. I have no doubt that there are pro detector operators that really know what they are doing but that probably accounts for 1% or less of operators and even they miss gold. Yes many will leave gold in the ground. Although I have not used an ATX I must add that Minelab could certainly learn from Garrett about making a user friendly detector that everyone could use without all the what I call 'Giggle switches.' They really are a waste of electronics.

Just saw your video. Can you believe that people are actually paying $5000+ for the mine lab??? Garret is the way to go. Always has been. Years ago I had a Garrett ground hog and was prospecting in Australia. Found loads in places that had already been done dozens of times by other prospectors using whites (the other metal detector of choice in the 80's) the garrett is a superior product, more robust and less complicated. Exactly what you want when your hundreds of miles from nowhere in the Australian outback. I've spent years away from Australia due to my job, but I'm heading back soon, still have the gold bug and I know exactly where I'm going to head with my brand new ATX........

After change of sequencing, the soil must be compensated with groundbalance, 6:01, you are using the gpx 5000 detector badly. the double disc D, is used in areas heavily mineralized. areas moderately mineralized or not, you must used a mono disc. without forgetting to calibrate the gpx 5000 detector with autotune! before starting any detection. we do not compensate the ground above the target, it is next to the target that must compensate the ground!, 12:17

For $5000 the damn thing should do all the walking, detecting, and digging. For the amount of the price difference, you would think that the Minelab had some super patented, or even magic technology, that the others just can't figure out? The price is obscene. I have been looking at buying a pair of detectors, and these are both way out of my price range. It's tough to find anything, because I don't want to waste money on a so so pair of detectors. Even the AT Pro is well above my range. So am I going to have to settle for the ACE 250's? I've looked at so many on ebay, and that's what I come up with. Can you give me your expert advice? Thanks

Maybe In USA it works but in Australia the atx is garbage. Just to get it to run somewhat stable the sensitivity has to be set at 3 or 4 which means no bloddy depth and on top of that if the coil even touches a bit of shrub it gives a false signal. Total garbage not worth a dollar

NOT A FAIR TEST. You are obviously not familiar with the GPX 5000 My observations. Didn't ground balance especially after changing timings. Threshold to low. SEE MANUAL"When the Threshold is too high a faint signal is masked and only the peak of the loud signal is audible above the Threshold. Coil to far of the ground." Fine Gold is optimised for Mono Coil not DD you should have used Salt Gold if the ground permitted.I know you think you were trying to be fare by using the DD on both but your timing selection has resulted in poor performance. Gain 15. did you have Stabiliser on 15 to? If so would have been less sensitive on small gold.What were the other settings eg Signal Peak ,Target Volume ect? It also goes without saying that the DD has about 20% less depth than a Mono. If your looking for gold you should always use a Mono with the 5000 unless you want so Iron reject ability.
@bearkat4160
@bearkat4160 10 жыл бұрын
I used the DD on the GPX because the ATX has a DD coil, that is clear why I did so in the video and at 30 seconds into the video I make fun of people like you making stupid comments. Im sorry to say that the 5000 is not setup right you should be able to hear the threshole at all times. Turning the threshhole down so you cant hear it destroys the performance of the machine. I call it dummying it down, with a gain of 15 and above you can drown out the little ones. Not many people can tune 5000 to most grounds it like trying to learn how to tune a musical instrument that falls out of tune constantly. What's your favorite "go-to" machine? Liked your series where you compared the ATX to the Minelab SDC 2300. What do you gain by spending so much more that you would for a Gold Bug 2?

My go to detector is my ATX, good is every situation! Gold bug 2 can really not perform well in hot dirt, then you got to get a pulse machine.

I'm disappointed in both machines, if I paid 2k plus it better pick up at 1 to 10 in no matter the size. I would be sick after spending $5,000 for a md that didn't pick up at 2 inches. With that said I'm still getting the CTX3030. Thanks for the vid.

I bought a CTX3030, I cannot stand it. It is heavy, it sucks for swinging in water. I have 250 hours on it and I am done. It is going up for sale next week. I love my AT Pro.

After much more research, I'm sticking with my X Terra with added coils. For water hunting I'm going with the Detector Pro Headhunter. With the two machines and additional coils, I'm way under $2,500 and a HH. Thanks again you've been very helpful. GL&HH

I was at Rye Patch. A guy with a Minelab SDC 2300 shows me a gold nugget he had just found. My ATX Pro would not detect it with either coil right up against the gold! I was pretty ticked off and tried adjusting sensitivity, disc and resetting to factory settings. Nothing. I got out my White's GMT (just got back from the factory for this same problem) even 3" away from the gold nugget and again with a rock on top of the nugget, I was getting a loud zip zip detecting yhe gold nugget.

+TimoKa I found a nugget at Rye Patch about half the size of a grain of rice at 3"-5" with my GPX4500 and the stock DD coil. I'm currently researching for the best mono coil, if you have any suggestions.

Learn how to use the GPX before comparing it to the ATX. My Minelab GPX 4500 would have screamed at all of those targets even in factory settings with both it’s standard 11inch DD and mono coils in sand. In the mineralised goldfields of Australia? That ATX DD coil would only come in handy as an expensive rake to remove leaf matter before detecting with any of the Minelab machines from the vintage SD2000 to the GPX5000. As for the Minelab SDC2300 and GPZ7000? They’re in another league. We import great tech like the F-35 Steath fighter from the US into Australia but we export the worlds best metal detection tech from Minelab. Cheers

yeah but i do think that the GPX 5000 is more superior gold detector yet on the market. finding fine gold is what coil you are using on the gpx5000 why do you want to find bigger gold were its more harder to find were fine gold is more easier to find and it will all add up in your pocket.

Definitive test!...I think not, the machines should be tested to their maximum capability and in the case of the GPX5000, that's with the 11" mono coil that is part of the standard package when it's purchased. By the way, if you had run the 5000 in mono with the DD coil it may have shown a better result. The ATX appears to be a great machine at a reasonable price (at least in the US) and good on Garrett for developing it, competition is what's needed.
@bearkat4160

Did you not see the first one minute of my video? I explained why I did the DD coils. The ATX has one...so to be fair, I put one on my 5000. I do have a mono test coming soon though, just so the Minelab peeps will stop crying about mono coils vs Garrett's badass DD coil...cheers.
@aufinda4996
@aufinda4996 11 жыл бұрын
Bearkat4160 Yes I watched the whole thing and heard you state how it's DD v DD, however, I think that the comparison is disingenuous, you would be hard pressed to find a GPX5000 user in the WORLD that regularly swings a DD coil on a machine that's big advance is being able to use mono coils (which give better depth) in mineralized soil, the special timings (like Fine Gold, Enhance etc.) are there primarily to enable the mono coils to do this job. I look forward to seeing the comparison with the mono coils, I don't know how much experience you have with the 5000, but for those with experience, it's a deadly gold detector. I hope the ATX turns out to be a good machine as well.
@bearkat4160
@bearkat4160 11 жыл бұрын
AUFINDA Oh yes I do know how the mono coils help the GPX 5000 excel, however the ATX comes with a DD coil, and to make a fair test I can't use a mono on the Minelab...It's really just not a fair test - DD vs Mono. But I will, for you guys do a test with a mono coil on the GPX...just too see for myself.

Bearkat4160 So the minelab is made to be operated at peak with a mono... and the Garrett atx is made to operate at peak with a dd... so the real test should be done like this. The Garret atx is a nice detector but should really be compared to pi machines around its price range. its not made to be in the same bracket as the gpx series, if it was the price would reflect so.

jasonbarker9 Hi Jason, I will doing the GPX w mono coil test this weekend. Just so you know the ATX is a high end PI machine with a mid range price. The GPX is still king...I'm just showing another high end PI alternative...The Infinium and TDI Standard/SL are mid range performing PI detectors...

Do I need a MONO coil for ATX ? What do I lose with a MONO coil ? If you were buying a New detector, $2500 is top of my Budget. What would you purchase? I am going to Hunt in Montana

I would get an ATX with their new designed closed coils, DD coil on that machine is a little more sensitive than the mono, but the mono goes a little deeper on bigger items. I can get you good deal on an ATX.

"Minelab GPX is 5,000 a half Wolf, ideal for a long time they have ugly (Hill discrimination, especially Badger, ball)." -Bing Well, that was what Bing thought. I think that for the money, the ATX is better, however, if the sky is the limit for the price, go with the GPX 5000.
