With 40 years of detecting, I had such high hopes for a state of the art machine from Garret. There are so many features missing and behind the curve with the big 3 . Maybe time will tell.

I honestly expected something far superior than what we were presented with. This is clearly a hybrid of existing hardware and a spin on existing technology with an attempt to package it as an all new superior offering. Sadly, the more time I’ve had to digest what was presented and the amount of time leading up to the debut of this new machine, the more I am disappointed. if this is the best that Garrett can do, the future is dim for the brand.

I can care less about multi-frequency machines anyway. I’m a relic hunter that digs every signal, literally. Ferrous and non-ferrous, I dig every chirp,beep,blip, squawk and squeak lol. If you don’t do this you’re leaving artifacts in the ground. Between using my Garrett AT-Max and Teknetics T2, I have zero interest in running out to purchase the “new machine”… last year my buddy and I went to a Civil War site we’ve been digging. I had my Teknetics T2 and he had his Minelab Equinox 800 with a larger $200+ coil. I recovered 3 pistol bullets and a beautiful cuff button. He recovered nothing. I’m sure he felt silly,but I just happened to walk over the better ground really. But it’s really about knowing your machine as well as getting your coil over the right spot. I just can’t see spending $1000 on an Equinox, XP Deus or Vortex when my machines are perfectly fine lol.

For a machine that was overly hyped with “ The Storm Is Coming” teasers for months I was expecting more. It’s basically a re cycled APEX with a new shaft & paint job. Nothing ground breaking at all. I would have expected to see more features and definitely more audio options for the amount of time you’ve spent in R&D. The software is nothing new is it? It’s basically Simultaneous MF with a maximum of 25khz? Come on garrett you’re not even trying here. This machine won’t even make any waves in the market at all, considering you have Minelab, Nokta & XP all offering budget machines with great features. If you’d made the hardware and software great and something different to start with I think you may of been in with a chance, but unfortunately you’ve dropped the ball here big time. You need to go back to the drawing board and come up with an offering that’s really going to turn heads with the wow factor. Not just offer a pretty mediocre at best machine with purchasable software options.

@@The_Essential_Light I have nearly 30 years of detecting experience and have been involved in machine development and testing so I’d say I’m pretty much an expert and entitled to my opinion. I’m not biased at all, I’ll use the best machine that suits my needs and gives me an advantage regardless of the brand. Unfortunately for me the Vortex has nothing to offer that I can’t already get from competitors in the same price bracket. In fact similar competitors machines in the same price range offer a plethora of settings and features that the Vortex doesn’t. You don’t need to be an expert to work out that this machine is inferior to what’s already out there. I was expecting more with all the stupid “storm is coming” hype and was hoping for a machine with catagory 5 wow factor. But unfortunately for me, it’s an anti climax and nothing more than a dust devil.

I assume the target ID will be altered depending on the level of ground minerals. Real world (in the ground) testing will tell the tale.

Can you put new rechargeable batteries in it in the field if the batteries go dead or do you have to go home and plug it in and recharge it

I had apex and that machine had rechargeable battery 🔋 and the battery lasted me upto 2 to 3 days of at least 6 hour metal detecting

It's a garrett for just garrett users and more expensive versions of apex 😮 uk price £629 without headphones so if you want headphones £179. Too much for a mid range metal detector .and Just remember how many people bought and sold apex within 6 months because machine was so unstable on mf frequency.

Why isn't a metal detector being developed that can descriminate aluminum? Iron metal is no problem, but you always have to dig aluminum. Unfortunately.

Get a nokta legend. Apex feels like a toy compared to it. Not to mention the Apexs' lack of iron bias, recovery speed and very chatty nature, oh and the lack of software updates to fix such problems. Seems like garret just left apex users, myself included, in the dust.

Total junk. Do yourself a huuuugggeee favor and look at Xp...Nokta...minelab these machines SMOKE and I mean SMOKE all Garrett machines at better price points. Do your home work. Garrett is the Fisher Price of machines. I wouldn't buy one of these for a kid nevermind and adult

@WingMan1964 ..There's the problem! I've used every Garrett product. And this one is no different. It's not magic. I don't need to use it. I know what it offers and it lacks in EVERY category. If you want to go out and spend allll that money on a machine with no iron discrim or tone selection you go right ahead.There are MULTIPLE machines that cost wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy less that will smoke that machine in any situation. I don't need to use it. I k ow what it has and what it doesn't. This thing is junk just like the rest of their detectors.
