It is because when he is doing the drumming he is just doing it from muscle memory allows him to use less of his muscle at once then a person just trying the song that isn't use to it. However it keeps the muscles going. When you stop like during that break is when your much more likely to get a cramp because it all the physical activity catches up to you. I would almost bet he is doing some sort of leg movement during that break in order to keep that pacing natural. Sort of like a long distance runner after they get their groove going it becomes easier as your breathing and heartbeat start to sink up with the rhythm of the run. Imagine running for a few miles getting that then stopping for a few minutes and then having to do another couple miles. That's why if you watch marathons when people start to stop it's hard to get going again. Man I went deeper into that then I was expecting. LOL!

With every other person who I've seen react to this, their brains melt out of their ears (which, I mean, fair) in the first ten seconds and they sit their open-mouthed and mumbling in shock and fear for the remainder of the video. I always wondered what it was about Haake's footwork that sounded so distinctly different from other metal I listen to. You pointing out that he's using hybrid snare rudiments like drags and hertas on the kick makes it crystal clear. Still WAYYYY beyond my skill level, but clear. Ya got yourself a new subscriber!

Thomas said in an interview that most of their tracks are written digitally & then they have to figure out how they're going to play it live afterwards. He doesn't understand when people ask him about the polyrhythms in Bleed because he just plays it as it was designed (of course, simple!). He also points out that most of their songs are in 4/4, it's just that people lose track of the 1 because of the way the band subvert the listener's expectations of where they think the kick & snare should be, but stay locked in and it's always there. Amazing drummer, amazing band.

Fantastic band, great liveclip. The "sockissue" is not a quick change in the middle of song. :) they recorded from multiple venues during the tour. I believe they have clips from at least 2 shows here.

Meshuggah are one the heaviest bands on the planet and their live shows are something you have to experience. Its super weird as majority of the crowd are standing like this = O

Meshuggah isnt one of my favorites, but as musicians, you have to respect them. Every instrument is a percussion tool, except for theoccasional lead guitar parts. Every member has an incredible since of timing and rythym keeping. Atleast that's how I see it.

Checkout Meshuggah's "i". Had to say it again. I don't think it's ever been played live, just programmed, I believe, but it's still cool as hell to listen to.

This song has always been a total mindfuck and everybody in the metal scene (whether it's metalcore, deathcore, hardcore, whatever) tends to agree that this is a technical prog masterpiece

I love your reactions!!!! The vocals have unique rhythm too The lyrics are deep, disguised, beautiful, bending and pulling at the framework of reality so poetically they add to make the best metal band on earth in my eye. Its a shame scream 😱 sounds are such a deterrent to deprive you from the joy of Meshuggah. listen and read along with Rational Gaze - album - Nothing

Hmm... To me they have these cool odd feel grooves, but utterly lack dynamics. They play the same tempo all the way through every song. After about ten seconds, you've heard all the groove you'll hear for the rest of the five minute song. In other worlds, incredibly boring. There's never a contrast in their music. Terrible one demensional singer, well really the whole band is just one demensional . It's metal but without breakdowns, tempo changes, and what makes a hard riff sound heavy(contrast).

I love how this song is used as an example in "metal is hard". The many damn genres of rock people summarize as one. This is progressive metal, and I dont think you will find a single drummer from these jazz-influenced bands who doesnt have a jazz backround. So honestly...which genre is logically the more difficult?

Is modulated 4/4 You see its not really about the rhythms as much as its about what your doing in between .25 bars. You add a different cluster of beats with different rhythm laid out in pattern blocks untill your at the next musical change up then you back at it again. Defiantly one of the G.O.A.T.S. Dope!
